Speculation: Caps Roster General Discussion (Coaching/FAs/Cap/Lines/etc) | 2025-26 Summer Edition

At the very least it adds Ottawa as a motivated competitor for a higher-end winger. Robertson, Kyrou or Tuch (UFA). Anyone else available that qualifies? (Doubtful Tuch would sign in Ottawa but nonetheless...)

I still like Lafreniere as a value buy. Fits age-wise and while short of what's needed in terms of being a prime operator/facilitator he's shown glimpses of playoff mettle.

For the love of god stop with the reclamation project adds. Go get an actual freaking talent. Zero faith they do anything.
 
I don't get where the perception GMCP has missed on a bunch of moves. That basically only applies to Ehlers. They never made a serious offer for Hughes and Panarin was never ever coming here because of the city, not the team.

Which is to say, it's going to be a long summer if people get annoyed that GMCP couldn't convince Tkachuk to come here over Florida.

We’re in a world where pretty much every impact player with any trade protection only wants to go to like, 4 teams, and it’s a perpetual gigantic sellers market. Almost no teams are actively moving players, and because like, 70 percent of the league is always looking to get better the bidding is out of control. People bring up Kyrou, but the Blues aren’t in any rush to have to make a move there, he’s signed long term, is at his lowest value wise because of one bad season, and they’re likely to be much better next year. They aren’t forced into a corner of having to move him for even a reasonable amount. It’s a league of “I dare you to give us what we want for our player”.

While it’s fun to think about Robertson or whatever, the most realistic thing we are likely to see is like, getting Elias Pettersson and kicking him to LW and hope you can respark him. But I know that wouldn’t make many people on this board happy (probably including me)

Still a better idea than signing a 30+ mid UFA or approaching the reported ask for Knies or something. I don't mind value buying necessarily, particular if a younger player. Big picture it's still a tall ask operating under the assumption any high-end winger is going to be a game-changer. It very rarely works that way. They were blessed with one of those but they don't come around all that often. The best of what's available in a given year probably isn't going to be enough to kick them squarely into that top bracket IMO. Brady wouldn't have I don't think. Robertson comes closer but I still think they're limited by what a guy like Strome can do 5v5 (to say nothing of Ovechkin's return and the issues that could result...).

Circumstances dictate moves these days. DeBrincat is one to watch for sure given his contract status and what Detroit is now up against with Larkin. Robertson being a year away from UFA potentially is another. If Hellebuyck is moved does that then lead to a Kyle Connor joining the US exodus from Canada? The Caps may need to wait things out and see what shakes loose rather than treating the first round as a deadline. They may also need to make those picks with half an eye toward potentially flipping them later on (perhaps not the worst methodology in order to extract max draft value at that).

You have zero idea what type of offer they made for Panarin, same as the rest of us.
 
Not sure why I can’t respond in the NHL thread. So I’ll say it here, I hate the BK trade to Florida. Who cares is Ottawa starts over again, that’s all they do. Florida is going to be a monster next year unless the injuries pile up again.

At some point they have to stop meddling in the middle of we want an impact player and we are afraid to give up anything for someone. Scared money doesn’t make money.

Pretty much anything any team, including us, would have offered would be better than Greentree and a third, it was a dogshit return that they got because that’s where Panarin wanted to go. He held literally all the chips, turns out players who want to go somewhere specific don’t care about what the return is. Artemi Panarin isn’t going to go “so I really want to go to LA, but they’re only offering Greentree and a third for me. Washington offered Lakovic and a 1st (as an example), that’s a much better return for the team I’m choosing to leave, so I’ll pass on the place I truly want to go to for that”

Three firsts, including a top-10 pick and a second is a huge payment for a guy with a NMC.

Makes me think Florida was the big driver here and had their heart set on the acquisition, as opposed to Ottawa initiating and pursuing value. It also follows that Brady didn't force Ottawa's hand by demanding a move to FLA.
