Speculation: Caps Roster General Discussion (Coaching/FAs/Cap/Lines/etc) | 2025-26 Summer Edition

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.

Seems like a pretty good comp for a Chisholm deal

Yep. That feels a lot better than $2.2M.

And from the previous thread on way we throw around draft picks: I was thinking this last night that it seemed like we had a full cupboard of picks across three years and now we don’t. Haha.

That said, picks, prospects, roster players are all assets under management. Gotta use them and I am fine with our gameplan now that (I think) I understand the plan:

Keep getting younger. Have lots of RFA’s that can be cost controlled with the wonky Cap increase period. Clearly a strategy here that is beyond “common fan knowledge”. Love that this group isn’t common and makes for fun discussion.

That said, I still feel like we need one veteran Top 6 (whom maybe plays 3C for us). Can still be an RFA.

we gave up more for sourdif than toronto did for maccelli 🙃
It's because of the cap hit. Maccelli is at 3.425 for one more year and then has to be qualified at the same rate or higher (or goes UFA which means potentially losing him for nothing). He could also have a great year and potentially take Toronto to arbitration for an even higher number. Sourdif is signed for 2 years at 825k.

It's the same reason Tarasenko went for nothing. He's not *worthless* as a player, but he's not worth his current contract.

paid a 2nd for a dirt cheap contract that could’ve been offered to like 30 guys in free agency or just called up a player from our system

the logic isn’t there either way

The obvious logic is that they think he's better than the 30 guys in free agency that would've taken the same contract, or the players from our system.

We'll see if they're right.

This^

There's not really anything I can say. At this point, it's admittedly a headscratcher. I can try to rationalize it all I want, but the proof will be in how 25-26 and 26-27 goes. If Sourdif becomes an elite bottom 6er making league minimum, it'll be a steal. If he ends up Hershey, then it's a bust. And of course, there's a lot of middle ground to those two extremes too.

GMCP said in his recent presser that the cap projections have reset the pricing all around. I think folks are gonna be SHOCKED tomorrow by the salaries that get handed out.

I thought it was a bad trade when it happened and still do.

But I can see the thinking that 2 seasons + of Sourdif starting 2025 is more valuable then what GMCP thinks we could draft in the 2nd. I hate this thinking just looking at the last 3 2nd rounders we have used have all be thought of as "hits" in the 2nd.

Maybe after buying cap friendly we deem Cap space savings more valuable then 2nd round prospects.
I did not like any of the 3 trades we used our 2nd rounders on in the last season.

Mangipane for a 2nd - I would say a bust and was a bad cap hit all season
Beauvillier for a 2nd as a rental - He was a fine rental but was a overpayment and didn't help us much
Sourdif for a 2nd - To early to say but that's top price for a 4th liner

You would hope you could have parlayed 3 2nd rounders into better the Mangi, Beau rentals and AHL player Sourdif :-/

Seems lame to do it now. Should have done it after the Cup when everyone wanted Caps gear. But now, they should just wait and do a "new era" rebrand.
Pittsburgh did a rebrand with Crosby. The Avs did one with MacK. The Oilers have done it with McDavid. The Bruins just did one with Pasta. The Lightning did one with Stamkos, Hedman, and Kucherov. The Kings did one this offseason with Kopitar and Doughty likely entering the homestretch of their careers. I think there’s plenty of evidence to show you don’t need to wait until your most popular player(s) leaves before you bring your brand to current standards.

They’ve already moved forward as a franchise with BMac getting promoted, a young coach in Carberry, and a commitment to the youth movement, plus they signed the new deal with DC and are currently renovating Cap One. The best time to correct a mistake was yesterday. The second best time is today.

With the Kings and Ducks rebranding recently, it’s now a two-horse race between Columbus and Washington for the worst sweater in the NHL. Nashville is a distant third.

So as-is they can only offer about $8M per to Ehlers. Doubt that gets it done so...shrug. (Edit: Unless Milano returns to LTIR so, I dunno, maybe...)

What's a Sandin+Lapierre+1st package fetch back in the way of top six wingers? Who has such a LD need to begin with? I guess I'll wager on Beauvillier coming back and then maybe one more stopgap added.

They could make a big swing. They have options with Chisholm now to move others.
