I dont hate it. If Pacioretty cant play so what. His cap goes to LTIR. If he can play, hey, it might be a free top6 forward that can be flipped if we suck again.

Edmundsson was low cost and low cap. If he gets back from last seasons slump he is pretty ok and can also be flipped easily.

So if its a miss it doesnt matter and costed pretty much nothing. Lets see if we are done or will BM find the trade he is looking for.

I really don't know why more people aren't seeing this. It's a minimal effort investment that doesn't really hurt them at all because the key pieces to contending are already on the team, we just don't know what they're going to end up doing in this next year.

Popping a few more of those in the bank to potentially move if it works out is a smart move, and honestly better than just doing nothing because each of those guys has some weight if they rebound.

People here keep talking about trading Fehervary, but is there any talk about that around the league?

Pacioretty signing is fine, i don't mind it. Low risk high-reward. Yes, he will take a spot from the rookies when he eventually returns. But he needs to earn that spot and there is great upside there because he used to be a great player. What is he now? Who knows? But if he is washed it's not really the end of the world, they can move on next summer.

They needed to shoot for potential which they did. This isn't a very good team as is but if they can get back the Pacioretty of old days maybe they can squeeze into the Playoffs. It's a long-shot but it's not like there were other great options at that money.

Edmundson deal was...ehhh. I get it, it's for veteran leadership but i think we should have just went with what we have. He's not going to play the whole season, propably not even half but not a fan of taking minutes away from Alexeyev with Johansen in the mix too. Asset wise with retention the deal wasn't that bad. Edmundson is the kind of dinosaur type teams covet at the deadline and should be easy to get that 3rd back. He has good Playoffs experience too as a guy who was really good during Habs SCF run.

I equate trading Fever are for sure Irwin super fans.
It's like... twabby and two other panic-phase win-now-or-it's-all-terrible pushers, I haven't really seen real smoke but I guess we also technically don't know what they were floating for DeBrincat

Just for the record, if Patches starts the season on LTIR (which it sounds likely to be the case), they can sign Fever to $2.5M, have Beck, Protas, and CMM on the roster, have 13 forwards, 7 D, and still be cap compliant.

The real issues would come when Pacioretty is ready to return. But that's a can for kicking down the road, and it won't be all that hard to do.

Good call with the cap space. I checked again and it looks like Pacioretty is included in the current cap figure. I thought him being on LTIR meant the $3.5 million in space didn’t include him.

So yes it looks like they won’t have to make any other moves to remain compliant. This could just be the roster they have entering the season, plus some of the kids.

So Mac is trying but other teams don’t want our cap dumps so it’s hard to pull off a deal. In similar news, water is wet.
According to this board this is not acceptable.

I would disagree that Sandin is his only connection to the team. He spent part of his youth here when his Dad was a Cap and is very close to Backstrom. I think it would be an appealing situation to him.
His dad wasn't in DC all that long, and I doubt he appreciated how his time here ended when they loaned him out to various AHL teams. I hadn't heard about Will being close to Backstrom, but considering Nicky will probably retire at the end of his contract if not sooner I don't think any relationship between them factor into the decision to sign a long term extension here.

I like Fever, don’t get me wrong, but with his ability and pedigree, I think he should be significantly further in his development than he has shown thus far. I feel like there’s another level he can and should hit - especially already by now - when it comes to offensive production and being a puck mover.

If his value is quite high around the league, I don’t see why they wouldn’t - or shouldn’t - just test the waters to see what’s out there in a package trade for a young, top-six skill player.

In terms of Fever currently, could he have been held back by Lavi and KM on D? Potentially. I think this year is huge for him in terms of career trajectory and seeing more of a total package.

I’m also quite high on AA and long-term don’t see a huge or massive difference in level between him and MF.

I like the idea of Nikolaj Ehlers if he wasn’t injured so much. He does a lot of what Nylander does but is likely cheaper in a trade and is under contract for 2 years.

I don’t really like the idea of Elias Lindholm. He’s a perfectly fine player but he’s nothing special. I think a lot of what happened this year in Calgary can be discounted a bit given the toxic atmosphere under Sutter, but even without this season I have questions about how impactful he really is. Micah’s model at least seems to think he’s had a very mediocre 5v5 impact over the years:

Given he’d likely come with a big extension (EH predicts 8 x $8.75 million) I can’t really get behind that move despite him likely being the best center out there. He’s going to be 29 years old soon and that next contract has disaster written all over it.

Nobody will take the bad contracts I created, clearly it’s their fault not mine.
Ah yes, it’s Mac’s fault Kuznetsov decided he doesn’t want to try any more. And it’s Mac’s fault that Ted mandated Backstrom and Ovi will retire as Capitals. It’s also Mac’s fault the salary cap stayed flat after he signed those contracts instead of going up which would have made the contracts easier to maneuver around or move. Solid logic.

I mean, he's the general manager so he needs to figure something out. If I don't perform well at my job I get the boot. Nobody says, oh that's OK COVID caused us to lose profit! It's, COVID caused us to lose profit, find a way to fix it or hit the bricks.
