Sounds like both have very solid chances to earn spots.

Nice to hear. Phillips brings pace and creativity. Two things I think the team could use more of. I agree with Carbery, despite his size, Phillips goes to dangerous areas and competes. The Capitals are also one of the bigger teams in the league. I'm comfortable giving him a chance.

Haman Aktell has been the most surprising player at camp for me. Seems more polished and composed than Johansen and Alexeyev. Having a large defender who can make passes is such an asset. Hope to see him continue this level of play as preseason goes on.

I think both of these players are worth keeping around for a while. See how they do playing in more complete lineups and against better competition. If I had my way, I'd throw Miroshnichenko in that mix too.

Matty P making me look like a smart prospect guy by ranking him #7 in the Caps pipeline. Perhaps I should have ranked him higher!

he looked as good in his second game as he was bad in his first, weird victory lap timing for a guy with mixed results being tested

He's been playing in a mens pro league for like 3-4 years. Last year he was a high scoring d-man in the SHL which is harder than it sounds. Also seems to have a very good head on his shoulders which combined with the size and the passing can be a very pleasant roster add.

Agree….I had him 9th FWIW. I thought he looked like a shitty skater first game….second game he pulled off the pesky waterbug imitation pretty nicely. Huuuuge upcoming game for him with 8/19.

Agreed with the assessment, didn't really consider him personally for the rankings because he's already basically at the prospect cutoff but I'm not going to blame someone else for different methodology there

First game it looked like he needed one extra NHL level tool to be good enough, but he adapted. I'm fine with that if he keeps adapting but I'm still not sure he won't be one of those up and down streaky guys who can't put it together long term without, say, better skating or an elite shot or some extra tool

You told me I was "trolling" by putting him #7 and now he's on track to make the roster. When faced with some heavy criticism like that of course I'm going to take the W even if it might be just temporary.

I sure did, because you decided to selectively ignore everything you usually say about player primes and aging to pick a 25 year old forward over a 19 year old D who won the thread vote by a landslide, indicating your common sense went out the window to f*** around and have a good time.

This is more like a follow up on that trolling than anything else considering, again, he looked really bad in the first game and was one of the worst charted players. So now statistically, which I know you love, you're in here strutting on a coin flip outcome.

The best thing is that he's playing the same exact role Miro was just in, a player that you've been fairly negative on if I'm not mistaken so that you can... let me check my notes... pump up Andrew Cristall based on blind adherence to NHLe. In the Miro/Cristall vote you'd never change your mind after this preseason performance, but now the second Phillips is getting the 1RW look you're waving the victory flag...

You're taking stances that conflict with your other stances and messing around.

At a season ticketholder event today, Carbery cited Hardy Haman Aktell in response to a fan's question about which player surprised him the most (and I'm guessing that was the source of Tarik's report). He mentioned that with players who come to N. America / the NHL after performing well in the SEL or DEL, you never know whether their game will translate until they have an opportunity to actually play in an NHL rink against (mostly) NHL-caliber players. So far, it's looking like his performance in Sweden might continue into his time in N. America.

I don't think 99% of the forum actually watches these prospects play hockey with any regularity so I'm not inclined to think much of the results of a poll and it certainly doesn't indicate I'm lacking common sense because I decide to go with guys like Cristall and Phillips higher than most.

I think Phillips was given a raw deal in Calgary and now he's going to be given an opportunity to prove himself. Just because he's 25 doesn't mean he's washed up. It just means that maybe he spent a few of his potentially most impactful years in the AHL rather than the NHL due to a bad coach.

He has definitely earned his place in the AHL where he's been a PPG player for several seasons. My concern would be his size but that is less of a problem these days because there is a lot less hitting.

Would be happy to see him get a decent number of games with the Caps this season. I'd be very surprised if he secured a roster spot for the entire season but then I would also like to see more new players get 10+ games . Waiver wire might prevent that but Phillips, Protas, McMichael, Lapierre, Miro, I'm all for seeing how these guys play when given the opportunity.

What I do NOT want to see is Sgarbossa or McIlrath.

I'm always interested in new infusions, especially those hungry to make the NHL regularly. Just get Mantha off this team.

Uh, you guys notice CMC at 2LW, temporary (Patches pending) or no?
Placeholder in that spot.

This is likely his (last?) realistic chance. Pacioretty will come back straight into the top-9 but that will take time. There are spots to win beyond that though. Mantha has been garbage and that along with Phillips is the best bet for CMM to beat long-term for a spot. Protas in there to fight for that spot too and if CMM doesn't win that spot this season, there are going to be more competition for it next season.

If it does then he could be a huge steal as a #3-4 dman. What i saw in the preseason just looked steady, calm and mistake free with a good first pass. Which would fit the team if the plan is to play with speed. Can see him and Sandin on the second pair if things pan out.

Baltimore-ish
Tommy boy had a nice interview w the junkies this morning. Nothing ground breaking but its good to hear about conditioning, he went to lots of weddings this summer and apparently didnt plan anything for his 1 year anniversary w wife.

did mention fiestiness probably came from rough housing w brothers and I get that. i had lots of brothers and all we did all day was wrestle/fight and it really helped in contact sports w leverage/leaning/weight

Puck drop around the corner.

What about HHA with Carlson? If he could handle that..

imagine

Fever/Sandin-Jensen
Sandin/Fever-TVR

Id think Sandin could destroy some lesser lines from 3LD position

PS: I just dont want to see Sandin-Carlson whatever it takes

PPS:
Fever-Carlson
Sandin-Jensen
HHA-TVR
as a compromise, ok

I'd much prefer

HHA - Carlson
Sandin - Jensen
Fehver - TVR.

I think you hope Carlson can both help, but excel with the young guy. Gives Sandin to a competent puck mover, and they were good last year. Also gives Martin a steady eddy partner, and they can just focus on playing defense. Would hope that'd finally get old Fehervary back too.
