CMM is definitely making the team right? Daily Faceoff lines doesn’t seem to think so

Player of the game was Phillips (post game). McMichael looked great too. Should have had a second goal with all of his chances. Protas and Malenstyn looked good as well. Gotta find a way to rid of Mantha.

Looking like...

Ovechkin - Backstrom - Oshie?
McMichael - Kuznetsov - Wilson
Milano - Strome - Phillips
Malenstyn - Dowd - NAK

Maybe flip Wilson & Oshie. Waive Mantha to see if anyone is desperate. He's getting chances but who is he displacing (pre-Pacioretty even)? How does he build confidence while sitting? It doesn't seem tenable. Protas/Miro/Lapierre/Frank/Suzdalev/Snively/Dube offer quantity to throw at any additional depth wing need at least. Protas or Snively as the extra F is fine IMO.

Big picture still not sure about the defensive play of Kuz/Strome/Carlson but Backstrom's game is at least promising. He greatly helps sort them out compared to a year ago.

Should see a big set of cuts tomorrow. Skinny things down for Thursday game and get people to Hershey.

Forwards sent down: Sgarbossa, Limoges, Snively (i suspect he gets claimed), Lapierre, and Miro. I’d like to see him play another game but there are battles going on. He needs to play in Hershey.

Dee: Iorio, McIlrath. Goalie: Clay.

I like those lines. I would flip Wilson and Oshie.

We need to get creative to move Mantha. Even if we retain half of salary we can fit 23 players including Paches when he comes back. And it frees a roster spot. I think we are going to have to play him to showcase and hope he performs well. Right now GM’s are hanging up on Mac.

I'm glad to see Matthew Phillips not only getting but earning an opportunity with the Capitals. Rooting for the kid.

Why his hometown team that drafted him all the way in the 6th round and saw him leading the AHL in goals and pts halfway through the season called him up only to give him like 18 total minutes of icetime in 2 games I guess I'll never understand. Especially when he was a top 10 AHL scorer the year before as well. Just Darryl things I guess. He's scored a shitload of goals at every level he's played at.
but he smol

If you guys can get Kuznetsov and Mantha on program I think you could surprise some teams this year. Or trade em for somebody who will. Carlson and Backstrom look healthy. Big veteran teams historically do just fine in this league.
Good luck this season

What about HHA with Carlson? If he could handle that..

imagine

Fever/Sandin-Jensen
Sandin/Fever-TVR

Id think Sandin could destroy some lesser lines from 3LD position

PS: I just dont want to see Sandin-Carlson whatever it takes

PPS:
Fever-Carlson
Sandin-Jensen
HHA-TVR
as a compromise, ok
I agree with most that HHA has been a pleasant surprise in the pre-season, but I don't think he's anywhere near ready for the type of duty or responsibility he'd face on a pairing with Carlson. He didn't look comfortable at all when matched against the Bruins top line, and was caught flat footed against Pastrnak leading to a clean zone entry and a goal against. The other two goals against he was on the ice for weren't really his fault (although I would have liked to see him a bit more pro-active on the third).

At this point HHA should be given a shot at a limited role, and then see how he can develop from there.

Sandin-Carlson will be fine.

Rumoured price for OTT to dump Joseph (2,95 for 3 years) is a 1st or a named prospect. So Joseph has couple years in for Mantha @ 2,85, but on the other hand he might actually be useful for bottom6 role for some teams. What would we be willing to pay to get rid of Mantha?

I wouldnt want to give anything..

Nothing.

I'd be happy to dump him at nothing even with his salary partly retained, but i'm not sure that'd be wise at this stage.

Just dump him to waivers if/when he can't make the team. He's not going to get claimed but that leaves a forward spot to someone who actually wants it. Mantha can go find his confidence and motivation in Hershey. There are always long-term injuries happening during the season and maybe some team desperate for scoring help takes a swing at him. We might need to retain some but it'd still be better use of cap space.

Or then nobody wants him and he's still off the books next summer. Either way, problem solved. No need to get a further headache out of this by giving away assets to dump him.

They should have traded Mantha right after he gave that interview claiming he wants to prove that he can be the player that Caps traded for. Im sure for like a day there was a GM out there who believed him. But as soon as his skates touched the ice the widow was slammed shut. Next summer it is.

mcmike becoming that guy will be so nice man

I'd also like to see miro get legit nhl minutes over oshie but thatll never happen sadly
I'd scratch NAK way before Oshie.

They should have bought him out instead of hoping another team will bail us out.

Because Mantha would have to agree to forfeit $6.5M to be released.

As far as waiving, yea, sure.
So waive him and send him to the AHL if no one claims. I remember the Habs doing this with Karl Alzner with his bad contract. Im not sure Alzner even played in the minors

I'm at the point where unless Mantha turns off his coast motor and get into gear, put the boy on nacho duty until he begs for a trade or sees the light and becomes motivated. Problem is, as we all know, who would want to trade for the Mantha-coaster? Can we afford to sit someone with a 5.7m cap hit? Is it addition by subtraction? I'm starting to think so.

Seeing him casually miss the open net last night and appear to be emotionally unphased made my liver cringe. 'Uh oh, better be ready for a lot of whiskey'. Shut up and do your job or I'll have you replaced.

Yes, I have talks with my internal organs. Caps hockey will do that.
