How much load management is realistic if we want backstrom to play a full season? No back to backs? Randomly sitting if it’s 3 games in 6 nights?
I wish the Caps were willing to do some load management.

I'm still pissed off we gave Chara no games off heading into the playoffs.

I'd say he plays top 6 minutes in Hershey and ends up on PP1 there playing the Ovi spot. Wouldn't be surprised to see him get some NHL games due to injuries here and there as well.

I think after that game, Miro has proven he is ready for North American hockey. They will have to make a spot for him in Hershey versus SC. Has the frame and physicality. Will be a great growth year for him. With logjam in WSH I don’t see him getting many games unless the injury bug hits again.

Well, I think we have our answer on Mantha. I know it's only one preseason game, but my god he was awful. All the talk of sports psychologist, conditioning, and trying to live up to the player they traded for is meaningless. I wasn't expecting much, but still a little part of me was hoping that we would see something different. He still looks listless, unengaged, and hesitant. He won't do any work on the boards, no battle, no hustle to create a play. It's like he just waits around until the puck accidentally finds him and then he promptly turns it over. The fight at the end of the game was just the cherry on top. Normally I give a player credit for dropping the gloves, but this was a selfish and unnecessary fight that put the team shorthanded.

Such a frustrating player to watch! He has all the talent in the world. Strength, skating, stick handling, and a good shot, but no motivation, compete, and very little hockey sense. I don't believe he can think the game at an NHL level. On top of that, he plays hockey like his heart isn't in it. I'm actually starting to believe that he doesn't really enjoy playing the game anymore and that is why he looks so disinterested all of the time.

I think we've reached the point where we need to just bite the bullet, accept our losses, and move on. Addition by subtraction. There's plenty of other players who can take his spot that will contribute in a positive way (even if they aren't as skilled). I would rather cheer for someone who wants to be there and puts their heart into playing.

He's very raw, but it's clear the talent is there. He needs some time in Hershey to learn the systems and the language without the pressures of the NHL. I think once he becomes more acclimated it will be a very fast transition to the NHL. Perhaps, even as soon as by the end of the season.

You must have missed the first preseason game, where he was cruising around doing nothing. Soft nothing. Some praised him because he once tossed the puck to Milano and Milano buried the goal.

I didn't see this game, but I trust your observations. He is what he is. Useless. Less than useless.

Now that you mention it, I did watch the first game. He was so unnoticeable that I forgot he even played.

I wonder if Mantha could conceivably get waived if his play and effort doesn’t improve. There isn’t much room on the NHL roster up front, especially once Patches eventually comes in.

Ovi-Backstrom-Wilson
Milano-Kuzy-Oshie
CMM-Strome-Phillips
Protas-Dowd-NAK
Malenstyn

Mantha doesn’t really do anything right now - he isn’t a playmaker, not a big goal scorer, doesn’t use his body, lazy in his own zone, doesn’t hustle, doesn’t PK… if he somehow gets claimed you get the cap space to do something else, and if he doesn’t you lose nothing.
