And most people thought it was concussions that would shorten/end his career….might end up being his back…

I didn't see the 3rd period but just watched the clip of the injury. Did anyone confirm it was his back?

My first thought the way he went down in real time was groin from that pivot, but then the slow motion close up has me thinking it might be a left achilles by the way that boot kind of snapped back.

Oshie says he'll be back in a tweet after the game, and Carbery gives a cryptic answer but says he's not going to be skating in the next few days.

Caps waiting to decide on UFAs

The Capitals don’t want to start selling yet. They want to give their team every chance possible to stay in the playoff race.

But given the roster transition they started a year ago at the deadline, there’s no question they are being realistic and will move pieces depending on where they sit in the standings closer to March 8.

Three notable pending UFAs who could move are Anthony Mantha (18 goals entering the weekend), Max Pacioretty and Joel Edmundson.

Edmundson is already cheap at a $1.75 million AAV because the Habs retained on him last summer, and the Caps could make him an $875,000 AAV player by retaining 50 percent again. He could be a sought-after third-pairing defenseman with a Cup ring.

How could the Maple Leafs not use a guy like Edmundson at that price?

Pacioretty is at $2 million, and the Caps would be willing to retain on him, too. He’s among the many forward names on Edmonton’s radar. Pacioretty has a full no-move clause and would have to waive it, but presumably he would do so for a chance to play in the playoffs on a strong contender.

One positive about the Caps' recent surge is that it allows BMac to hold out for a better deal from a potential trading partner. He can tell another GM who wants to pry someone like Mantha or Edmundson away that with the Caps still in the playoff hunt, he can't sell now unless he gets a solid return ... it may have only a marginal impact on what the prospective partner might offer, but it lets BMac string things out and could lead to a better deal. Or the prospective partner may make his deal elsewhere and there won't be any chairs left for BMac when the music stops.

Caps have 3 game in hand vs Tampa. They are 5pts behind.

Is that some insane hill to climb?

Its not just Tampa they have to beat. Looking back last few years and it comes to a amount of points, not a team to beat.

Its a long shot. Its a tough hill to climb. Yes.

Its not impossible and im not saying they need to go full firesale and grab any lame middle round pick they can, just saying not much changed in the past week or two. Sure we can give it few more games, but the overall idea currently should still be ”sellers”.

That means shifting focus and looking ways to improve for next year and the ones coming after that. Doesnt mean selling just to burn it down, any trade still needs to make sense. I just said yesterday i wouldnt trade Oshie if the return isnt something of an overpayment.

Well, it all depends on your perspective. IF you think they are playing to their level right now, then all the teams behind them (they are sitting 9th), then it really does come down to teams to beat.

There is no “Magic number” each and every a season. If you look at each teams “current run rate” for points, you have the Caps with a decent chance. They would have to fall off current pace to allow others teams to pass them.

It’s certainly possible. But I wouldn’t assume it’s likely. Maybe 50/50, IMO.

Could you guys please stop being gimpy old bastards and taking all of our best players...

Moneypuck gives Caps 16,5% to make it to playoffs.

But i like the optimism, really want them to make it. We have tough schedule but if they keep playing like the past few games, why not! :)

Yeah. I don’t put their playoff chances at 50/50. I put their ability to sustain their current run rate at 50/50. I believe they are at a 54.5% pts/game pace = 89-90pts. I think it’s 50/50 they end up there.

Will that make the playoffs? Probably not. But it IS possible. And of course they could overachieve that 54.5%….thats part of the 50% prognosis I have.

Net net: 50% chance they sustain the 54.5%. Probably 30-35% chance they fall below it. Thus 15-20% chance they climb above it. (And moneypuck is 16.5% as you say, so that falls in line).

Hope that all makes sense

We are as in it as anyone, and trending up.

Massive games today in Metro and the East. Meaningful hockey is better than the tank any day.

That said, I still want Mantha gone at TDL. Wait for the Summer to deal with Lindgren, who should have massive value at the point. He might have the league’s best contract.

There's no reason to not go for it
Parity being so crazy now in League Standings...
4 teams incl us at 60, 2 at 59, 1 at 58, 1 at 56
so if we don't move forward to Playoff spot, moving down past those 7 other teams within 4 pts of us would get us to 25th in League with a small possibility of moving down 1 or 2 more
potentially a 6-8 pick

Going for it is a different story. We absolutely should not be adding UFAs at the deadline, and still should move Mantha. But maybe a buy, like they did with Sandin.

I have not fully embraced the tank, as evidenced by my avatar being tank-free so far, but I do think you have to SELL HIGH on Mantha and maybe Patches. The value for guys like that is going to be greater than their contribution to an unlikely Cup this season, and you're probably not signing them next year.

Keep winning, keep boosting trade values, see where you stand at the TDL.

sorry didn't mean it as go get a big UFA and try for a run
just meant try to make the Playoffs
and if there's a nice deal out there with at least another year or two at TDL, weigh those options
obv understand too that Martha/Dowd/MaxPower et al may be moved

Trade Mantha, Edmundson, and Patches at a minimum.

Trade Dowd if the price is right. It isn’t a must though. Trade Kuemper if you can to get out of that contract and keep Lindgren. I don’t want to trade Lindgren period. Maybe for a top 6 center which isn’t happening.

Trade another D. I don’t think there is going to be a big drop off if Jensen or TvR are traded, not enough to matter with this team.

The only way I’ll truly be upset with our move is if any of those top 3 guys are held onto.
