I hope we all know, that once JC74 is traded, he’s gonna tear up the league - scoring pt/gm - and stop using gummies.

He’s going to Larry Murphy us. He just will.

Sigh
I mean, Murphy was what 27 when we traded him? Carlson is less then a month from 33.

Maybe he has a Karlsson like year, but I don't bank on that long term. I expect he's the exact same thing he's always been but because he's no longer here we just see the points and not the gafs.

No player has ever come back in any meaningful way from the procedure he had.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that procedure is probably drastically different from the ones performed a decade ago on the few NHL guys that have had it. Same idea, but they're better at it -- new materials, methodology, etc. Hip surgery is happening all over the NHL now like never before, and there have been players that have come back and played a lot and at high levels, even with major work on both hips.

I'm totally on board with expecting the worst, but there's more and more evidence of big recoveries from these surgeries now.

I don't really like this. No player, no matter how great, should hold a franchise hostage in this manner. When players get old, their roles get reduced, and teams have to prepare for the next stage, it's the natural order of things in sports. You can't predict exactly when the wheels are going to fall off completely, and that's why you can't promise anything, either. Trying to postpone or ignore the inevitable just makes things worse, IMO.

Now, I don't blame Ovi here, because he's certainly entitled to set his terms. It's on the Caps to prioritize increasing chances to win another Cup sooner (by doing a proper rebuild when it's time) vs. ensuring that if Ovi breaks the record it will be in a Caps sweater.

And even for Ovi, I'm not sure this is the best outcome. If he really wants to win another Cup, he should go to another team and play the GOAT version of the Brett Hull role on those late dynasty Red Wings. Not to mention that with an actual rebuild and an infusion of younger legs & energy, the Caps might've actually constructed a team with a better chance of getting Ovi farther in the playoffs then with this cast of aging vets.

But whatever... in the end, gotta enjoy these last Ovi seasons regardless of circumstances.

Thats the medical miracle I'm talking about. All the other guys having it done and disappeared. Backie may be the beneficiary of all those advancements.

What would the lines look like when we’re healthy? Assuming Backs comes back and is not a complete shell of his former self.

8-17-43
15-92-39
90-19-77
73-26-21

Mojo and Sheary could flip but no idea where Eller fits in. Snively as an extra and Protas back to Hershey even though he’s maybe earned a spot to stick around?

That’s a very deep vet team I’d be comfortable rolling those lines for the most part maybe shelter the kuzy line a bit. But overall you could pretty much roll them all about evenly nightly.

This lineup would have some injury issues with 77 and probably someone else. So keep Protas up, switch Sheary for Mojo and trade Mantha and put Oshie there. If he's not able to fetch us a nice trade package.

Anthony Mantha is on pace for ~20 goals and ~50 points despite getting no power play time and playing on the third line. Pretty good for someone lazy and shitty at hockey.

On a per 60 basis Mantha is their best 5v5 goal scorer this year. And he’s only behind Ovechkin in terms of 5v5 points per 60.

Keep that man in the top 6!

I’m pretty sure there are some studies that show for players his size (+6’4) it takes them roughly 400 NHL games played before they really hit their stride. If that’s indeed the case he’s just coming up on that number and we could see him come into his own this season.

It’s big around fantasy numbers 200 games for average size (5’11-6’4) then 400 for above and below those sizes. It actually is supported pretty well with some deviation from generational and superstar players and a few others but otherwise pretty close

So you're saying you should play your best players with your other best players and play those groups of players the most? Bold strategy, Cotton.

The line of Milano-Kuznetsov-Mantha played 7:34 of event strength time last night. They were the third line at even strength behind Ovi-Strome-Sheary (11:31 ESTOI) and NAK-Dowd-Hathaway (9:28 ESTOI) but they were completely dominant with 78% CF, 85% SCF, and 60% xGF. Mantha individually was a stud and either first or second on the team in most underlying metrics. So yes, keep that man in the top six. He's really good and he makes his linemates really good. Johansson had a pretty poor night last night which could be just an off game or it could be that playing with Mantha makes you look better.

I will give a shoutout to the NAK-Dowd-Hathaway line as well... they ruined Chicago last night. Just totally destroyed their matchups. As meh as NAK tends to look some times the chance generation and shot suppression numbers when he's with Dowd and Hathaway are pretty terrific.

The was NAKs best game here, I've been pretty underwhelmed with him before last night.

Def a good game from NAK, I'm sure he knows he has to seize every opportunity to get a sweater as an oppty to either stay on WSH's roster or show he's still an NHL'er for another club if/when he gets waived again

Lavi might actually give that third line some minutes. Might help long term by not burning old guys out

Isn't this pretty much the selling point for Vrana, as well?
The narratives are different I think. I don’t recall widespread complaints about Vrana’s perceived lack of production. He was seen as a guy with some defensive gaps that provided enough speed and skill to make up for his shortcomings and fans were calling for a larger role for him.

People have been complaining about Mantha’s lack of production even though that’s largely an inaccurate narrative and even though he’s been given the Vrana treatment at times. I also think Mantha offers more off the puck and in other areas than Vrana even though he’s less dynamic.

The underlying point is the complaints about Mantha not showing up on the scoresheet are mostly misguided. He’s showing up and he’s doing so in spite of the coaches. Give him more ice time and more responsibility and I think he’s a 30-35 goal guy.

You forgot to include mentioning him in some stat with McDavid , Matthews, etc….

Very unusual perspective for one to have in this instance. I don’t see Ovechkin holding them hostage. He made a commitment to the team to finish his career here and they committed to not be a shitty team, to commit financially and as an organization to building a perennial playoff team around him. Hardly seems like a hostage situation or even bad business.

I thought it was interesting that Leonsis used "I" here instead of "we" or even "George."

"I'm not gonna do what I did last time and trade everybody," said Leonsis, in reference to the total teardown the Capitals endured roughly 20 years ago that resulted in them selecting Ovechkin with the first overall pick in the 2004 draft.
