Not sure there's a cap fit with Minny & Kuz. There's Dumba but he's fallen off a good bit and is similarly buyer beware. I mean, I guess returns could be worse if they mainly want to get out of the term remaining (and I would think cap space would be the primary asset gained). It makes some sense with Kaprizov there but the Caps aren't going to want to retain if that's what it takes. And Guerin is probably not primarily interested given some of the question marks with the player and their tight margins due to dead cap buyouts.

It's more of an off-season move and even then there's probably only a handful of teams that make sense. Maybe Montreal. CBJ if he's open to playing with Gaudreau. Chicago.
Cap fit actually works okay given Minny already has some cap room and if they send down a player and move Hartman to LTIR, they get close. Probably have to move Dumba in a separate trade which they should probably do. I'm sure someone would take him as an expiring right shot UFA. Maybe a little bit of retention to help Minny get through the next couple years with the PArise/Suter buyouts

Minnesota is a decent fit because they need a top 6 center and have attractive assets with plenty of defense and forward prospects. The fit with Kaprisov is also nice and they could have Yurov and Khusnutdinov in the near future. They might like to be more "Russian friendly"

Otherwise, yep it's probably an offseason move. Chicago makes sense as well

Messing around on capfriendly, assuming guys on IR return as well (Fehervary, Kuemper) Caps could be cap compliant with this lineup without a trade if Backstrom and Wilson return. It requires waiving NAK, Snively, Malenstyn, and sending Protas to Hershey. But there's discretion on who to keep. They could waive Alexeyev and keep Protas instead for example. Protas is definitely worthy of keeping in the lineup but they don't have to trade anyone...

Yes. It was the Cup season 17/18.

Ovie had scored his 48 and 49 in that game and Caps was leading 5-3, but Devils didnt want to give him opportunity to score the hattrick and reach 50. Ovie played almost the last 3 minutes if I remember correctly and got couple shots, but whole that time someone was also standing right next to Ovie. They didnt even realistically try to tie the game up, only cared about Ovie not scoring.

That was sort of disgusting in a way and I remember to whine about it every once in a while. Ovie deserved the 50 that year (had a down year before, nice bounceback), and especially in that game as he was a man in a mission.

Im sure some teams will take the Jersey-road. On a positive side, if Ovie keeps even relatively healthy he wont be needing empty netters. Its just a nice add at this point.
Ovi missed a breakaway that night to score 50 so he had his chance. And New Jersey not letting him score 50 has been their biggest on-ice achievement of the last decade so I’d say it’s even.

Life’s been crazy the past for weeks as the wife and I (mainly myself with painting and house projects lol) prepare our house for our baby in February so I sadly haven’t been able to watch much hockey.

The boys are rolling right now. Good to see a little 4 game win streak and first star of the week for Chuckie. Impressive what they’ve done with even more injuries piling up.

Oh man, I saw that interview. It was equal parts hilarious and frightening. In addition to saying he didn’t hear anything Lavi said, when asked what he saw on the sliding play to free Mojo, he said, (paraphrasing): “I dunno. I just heard the idea in my head. Ya know, sometimes ideas pop in my head, I’m not sure where they come from.”

Dude doesn’t hear his head coach, yet hears voices in his head.

Classic Kuzy, amirite? <nervous laughing>

Congrats hb11x - just to add to albro's essential advice: be sure to record any live sports you might be even marginally interested in watching so that you'll have a robust menu of choices for when it's your turn to do the middle-of-night feeding and chill sessions. The glow from a muted TV sports event in an otherwise dark house seems to have a calming effect on babies - that was my story anyway

With my first I could have been a professional sports writer covering Pac 12 basketball. I watched more Pac 12 basketball that season than I’ve watched college basketball total (except for March Madness) in the last decade.

hb11, get yourself a sweet setup in the nursery. I’m talking comfy chair with a foot rest, one of those nice airplane neck pillows, Bluetooth headphones, and a great blanket. In addition to sports I’ve watched a lot of shows on my phone in the middle of the night getting my kids to fall back asleep on me. Having a comfortable setup makes all the difference and makes getting out of bed at 2:00am a bit more manageable.

If Strome is smart he knows Caps need him. Why sign for 4,5M? Hes doing a better work right now, thats what I see from highlights and occasional games at least.

Because he's restricted. He's got no reason to make a bridge deal easy, but all he has is what he realistically figures his arbitration number to be. So that might be what it comes to.

He's 25, so he should expect the Caps to push for a 2-year bridge unless he goes on a real tear for the rest of this year. He has to be realistic about what the Caps have in the pipeline and the not-so-likelihood of the team trading Kuznetsov. As it stands right now, the only reason they should risk a lengthy extension for Strome is either if they're willing to move Kuzy or have little faith in McMichael or Lapierre's ceilings.

We'll likely need Strome for at least one more year, but beyond that it's a question mark. If we can get the bridge at a good number and he continues to play well, he'll either be a helluva trade piece or a damn good reason for a once-reluctant GM to think about trading 92.

If Backstrom cannot return should the Caps trade for JT Miller? They would have enough cap space to trade for him and a depth defenceman as well. Maybe even Miller and Boeser. Cap space. Trade assets, maybe if high picks are included but then they are the type of players to win now so high picks might not be missed.

With what trade pieces...?

And no, I don't want to take the Canuck's mistake off their hands let alone both of them.

Waiver claim order is using the 2022 standings at this point, right? Or does it still use the 2021 standings in December?

Because Tolvanen falling to Seattle would mean that Washington didn't put in a claim, which would be a real shame.

I think if this happened a month ago we’d be talking differently but with Hershey rolling and no real openings in DC, it’s not surprising they didn’t claim him.

Separately, it’s still odd to me how bad NHL management teams are at their jobs.

Does anyone know when Kuemper is expected to be back? Just curious to know if it would be worth while trying to pull a fast one and adding Lindgren in fantasy.

8 mil is not alot for a top line player that is 3 or 4 years younger than some there already getting 9.5 mil. Miller did get 99 points last year but the Canucks are suffering from an eight year flawed plan that has left the team totally messed up.

An asset the Caps would have is cap space, something the Canucks have none of. The Caps' are a win now team and those players are win now players. They just have to get out of the losing culture that was so efficiently built over 7 years by the worst GM in NHL history. No GM has been worse in so many categories.

Miller for a 25th pick? And maybe Johansen? And the team still will save close to 2 mil next year in cap space.

Ovy keeps on scoring.

He's 29, signed to 8 million to play center is apparently not playing center. He'll be 30 when his extension hits taking him till he's 36. If he's that good, why are the Canucks trading him after extending him...?

Where are we getting the 25th pick? As of right now we're 14th, and even with the recent run I'd be curious what makes you think they're suddenly ready to make a deep run to end up with the 25th pick.

I also see zero world where a projected late first, which we don't have, and Mojo is gonna get you JT Miller if he's actually worth the contract.

Why trade him? Okay, you are not aware of him too much then. The last year he was the center of trade talk, at the draft it was rumoured the deal fell through because it got leaked and because teams wanted to know what he wanted next contract.

The Canucks are capped out and about to do a rebuild/ retool or just get a bunch of younger players. JT wants to win now.

25th might very well be 30th if the Caps get another 100 point player into the roster sooner than later.

Are you even a Caps poster? I am sure a Caps fan would know the draft picks the team has.

Washington is a WIN NOW team whereas the Canucks are not close and are rebuilding. Of course there is always the chance that he goes to Pittsburgh and they add another 100 point guy. That would put Washington right out of the playoffs. And Detroit gets Horvat? Washington doesn't have the trade assets for Horvat.

I love it when fans from other teams come to our board to tell us how shitty we are as fans of their team AND ours.

And then threaten us with playoff elimination because we don't buy the sales pitch and the player discussed goes to Pittsburgh.

Hmmm.
