Second person I see mention Drouin.

Regardless of the personal and on-ice issues with the player, there is a 0% chance that Laviolette would play ever play him. He'd just be another 6min a night bench warmer.
I'd still take a free draft pick (if it's good enough) to give him 6 minutes few times before sending him down to AHL.

I disagree with the idea they can't get the puck into the zone. Would love to see some stats on that.

Regarding their identity, Lavi likes to activate the D-men and filter to the point. They've lost several of their more gritty, heart and soul players to long-term injury so few are left that are skilled at driving the net and scooping up rebounds, etc. So when the D-men get the puck they don't shoot as much, or when they do there's no traffic or clean up men waiting.

I'm seeing good puck movement in the offensive zone and control in general. I'm just not seeing the opportunism and hunger to get to the net and to score goals.

This franchise has had a recurring problem with perimeter play being the default for some time. Didn't used to be that way.

And on that note, here's the secret of success in the NHL: it doesn't matter what style you play as long as you can dominate with it.

Every so often there's a swing of the pendulum toward X system or type of player and teams start looking for guys like that. Before long everyone's playing a similar game and there's less of an advantage, until some outlier team gets really REALLY good at something else and nobody can stop it. Then everyone wants to copy THAT. Rinse repeat.

So if the Caps want to win they can't half-ass it. They need to pick a style and identity and maximize it. If Lavi wants the identity to be a combination of transition play from zone exits as well as high point play funneling to the net, then he's got to get some bangers in front of the net to free up the space for the perimeter guys. Let the shooters shoot and the bangers bang.

The good news is we have f***ing goaltending now so the need for defensive 2-way forwards and conservative offensive philosophies designed to limit counterattacks is gone. And that means, believe it or not. we're not as far off as it seems.

We just need a bit of a culture shift and a few ballbusters going to the net to free things up and start the chain reaction. We lost most of those guys to injury and they haven't really been replaced. Yet.

I know he likely doesn't fit for the Caps but...Erik Karlsson is back. Tied for second in goals, fourth in points. Three more even-strength goals than anyone else in the league. Incredible.

Drafted him in the 20th round in fantasy. Damn I got lucky

I'd actually take him one for one for Carlson. Sharks might be interested given the length and much lower cap hit of Carlsons contract.

I still think an on-the-fly retool can/should happen now, and and give Ovi a chance for another Cup before his contact is up.

Trade a 6th to get Leason back to start. He knows the system and players, and the young kids played great last year for a good stretch. Now with solid goaltending, they should do better, if they have some role certainty.

Try and move Carlson and Eller for the best value in a hockey trade (or picks they can flip for Cechyrun or other fast/young quality D help). Keep at least one 1st for this year's draft if we get any back.

Don't renew Lavi. I'm half serious with this next thought... but I'd love to see Orpik as Head Coach, and IF the CBA allowed AND IF Oshie is perma-LTIR, Oshie as an assistant coach. That's the room chemistry from the 2018 run (recall Kuzy loves Batya, so he may respond positively if he's around).

And from a chemistry perspective I can see Ovi becoming more of a quasi-Reggie Dunlop while still scoring lots and lots. Once the injury situation settles out and our cap scenario is clear, then fill the holes as needed (without blocking Igor and JL, et al).

I'm OK with less results this season but a fast rebound and all the while keep the team chemistry positive and focused on winning more games each year.

Any chance GMBM bites? I’m not sure he brings anything they already don’t have on hand but he is a body.

I like that. 26. Right handed shot with AAV of $1M. Scored 23 last year and won a cup. Keumper probably can give some intel To staff. But I’m a yes on that. All call-ups go back free (Pilon, Sonny, Johansen).

Lol, he's a breathing body. Just joking, he had a decent year with Colorado. It would add another SC winner and experienced youth in the lineup too.

I truly believe if he wants to continue coaching as an option, he will get a HC gig somewhere. I can't believe I hated on Orpik as a Pen for years for him to become one of my favorite Caps all time.

That is something to consider. It would drive Joe B nuts though.

I’d trade him for Kane in a heartbeat if he signed an extension. Kane would get Ovy there…..

Bmac needs to pull a little wizardry off to meaningfully help this crew.
Kane would be the injection this team needs right now. If Forsythe can't get a PP going with that lineup, then I'm not sure what will. It will cost the Cap's some prospects and picks for sure.

Enough with the grinders and plodders. Unless the player is above average at creating offense and scoring goals I’m not interested.
Totally agree, we have been following this grinder mindset for years now without any results. This team lacks skill, creativity and offense. It's been downhill ever since Bäckström started regressing and we were left with only Kuznetsov in the middle, who can be great at times but he just isn't consistent enough. Seeing guys like Sheary playing on top line with Kuznetsov makes you think what Lavi is thinking, they couldn't be more different players. But then again what else do we have in store :help:

Ehhh... results?

They are dominating when Ovechkin and Kuznetsov are with Sheary and both 8 and 92 have negative numbers without him.

How many fans here watched the Caps before Ovie? So many 1-1 2-2 Ties in the Bondra Olie era.
Yeah, I've been thinking about that. Good goalie, strong D structure but no real stud top 10 defenseman, weak at center, strong at wing. It's like it's 1999 all over again.

Not 1998 tho. I don't think this team has that kind of run in them.

He offers some things we need. Youth at 26. Right shot. Scored 23 goals last Year. Cheap so he can be buried. FREE - he is just a claim. If he doesn’t earn a spot when bodies come back you waive him to Hershey or off roster. Given our roster situation with injuries, I don’t see the downside.

Don’t confuse people it was 23 points
No chance he would be on waivers if he was a 20+ goal scorer
