The horns around Lavi are getting louder. He may say he’s done and move in a different direction (which may be what GMBM is pushing for, without publicly saying anything).

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we will see conciliatory comments from all sides, and then Laviolette will decide he wants to “go in a different direction” after the years out, and management thanks him and wishes him well.

Yes. He was never going to be fired. Both sides will just walk away, like with McPhee.

They learned their lesson about treating veteran coaches (any coach?) with a measure of respect after Trotz, as those kinds of things have ripple effects around the league.

I think I said 4 years ago Gmbm was setting all these contracts to term at the same time for a reason. It would've taken a lot more than this season full of injuries and ups and downs to deviate from that plan.

Orlov is helping this franchise even as a bruin. I'd like to see Carlson's coach kills/60. A real numba wan.

I thought that was already accepted (around here)….that they would part ways at the end of the season….

Players shouldn’t be making personnel decisions but yeah, there’s no reason Irwin should have played 55 games this year while Alexeyev sat in the press box for many of those contests. Irwin’s role should have been as a 7D who travels and practices with the team, and steps in for a game or two of a short-term injury occurs to a top 6 D.

Nothing is done until it’s done. I think as recently as half dozen games ago, it was dubious.

Maybe that’s just me.
Oh I don’t at all…not for the last 20 games….never for once thought he was in jeopardy to be fired, but they let it carry on way too long in the season, and when the season was conceded, there was really no path that had Lavi coming back with no shot at a playoff heater.

GMBM would probably be tying an anchor to his own neck….and I think they all know it.

This.

Color me unsurprised at extension talks going cold.

Is AAs speed and mobility fully back to pre-injury? I haven't watched him enough to say conclusively of course but would swear he was a tiny bit faster compared from when I saw him in camp long ago.

No way they sign Laviolette to an extension that in this market probably starts with a 5 and is for at least 3 years given the results he produced since coming here and the fact that they'll quite possibly have to graduate all of Protas, McMichael, Malentsyn and Alexeyev to full time NHLers

Imagine if he had pushed Alexeyev for Irwin and Siegenthaler for Chara off the organization in the same short coaching tenure, plus Vrana and McMichael seemingly hanging on by a thread

I really pined for Laviolette even before he was hired. For the most part, I've despised the way he has coached. Realistically, I think this era of core plays had one legit shot after 2018 and that was in 2019 when we blew the series to the Canes. Every move from here on out by the organization has to be carefully made if we want to max Ovi's opportunities for one more Cup. Unlikely as it seems, if his play doesn't drop too much for the duration of his contract, and the right coach comes in, and GMBM make's the right decisions to infuse youth with veteran leadership, this team can have a few more punchers chances in the playoffs, but it essentially has to be perfect just to get to that point.

From a roster standpoint, we need more speed and skill. Too bad those attributes don't grow on trees. I wouldn't know even know where to begin with this team. We're stuck with our centers, so then you have to select a coach who can get the most out of Kuznetsov. We need to bring in two top 6 wingers. Ehlers would be perfect. Trade Mantha, try to sign someone to fill the void. Maybe CMC, Protas, or Hendrix hit a lottery ticket. If we could throw some capital and get DeBrincat or Timo Meier if those teams don't work out for those players that could alter the path a little but it's a borderline pipedream. Oshie and Backstrom are anchors. I don't know if there is a correct formation of linemates for those guys. Defense and goaltending may be adequate for this team.

Remaining schedule:

NYI
@ TB
NYR
@ MTL
FLA
@ NYI
@ BOS
NJ

They’ll only be favored maybe in 1 game. Maybe Boston and NJ will be resting players so that might impact the tank.

But I could definitely see them only getting like 4 more points with this schedule.

The quotes sourced I think by a poster here about Orlov being impressed by the depth and dynamics of the coaching he was exposed to post trade did it for me. I don't think that was even meant to be a slight but it really underscores how behind they are in the game right now.

Good on them for getting a (late) second round pick for Lars Eller but he’s another guy who probably shouldn’t have seen much game action this year, and honestly should have just been traded last offseason.

It’s not like Eller had a good season last year that justified bringing him back for a playoff run, and it’s not like he was a likely candidate to be re-signed. So instead of getting Protas and/or McMichael a full season of experience for them to use going into next year, they trotted out a replacement level Eller all season. McMichael and Protas are still green at center at the NHL level and we are left wondering if either is capable of doing anything next year instead of having a definitive answer.

GMBM should have forced Laviolette’s hand and he didn’t. That was a pretty irritating decision both at the time and in retrospect.

Sammi recently resigned at her old position at Washington Hockey Now, and I saw some comments speculating she was going to be the new Post beat writer. No idea if it’s true, but if it is she’d be great at it. She loves the game and unlike a lot of others she likely wouldn’t be using it as a stepping stone to another gig.

Whatever it is we’ll find out soon.

She went to The Hockey News. FWIW. Announced today.
