Agree that Nick's puck protection - both along the boards and in open ice - is not as strong as it was, and his ability to win pucks is also diminished, He still has elite vision and can thread great passes, but he has fewer opportunities to do so because he's easier to catch up with and dispossess. Alternatively, the sluggish collective motor rate of a typical Backy line possession makes preventing solid entries pretty easy (another reason he should play with MoJo). And then his transition going the other way after he or his lineys are dispossessed has been hard to watch.

On the PP, you see glimpses where his little shimmies and fakes create more time and space for him, but you used to see that all the time. Last couple of years, opposing PKers have been pretty aggressive about just straight-up attacking him with when has the puck on the PK. and that doesn't seem to have slackened. And it's easier to attack him with both Ovie and Carly out.

I want all that to be different, but it ain't been thus far.

5. Dmitry Orlov, Washington Capitals

Age: 31 | Position: LD

Contract status: $5.1-million cap hit, pending UFA

CJ’s take: This is a new name on the board and it’s a whopper given that Orlov is an established first-pair defenceman logging nearly 23 minutes per night. While the Capitals continue to discuss an extension with Orlov’s camp, the progress on those negotiations is said to be “nowhere.”

That could still change with one conversation and one seismic shift in bargaining position.

If it doesn’t, Washington’s front office will have no choice but to explore the market in a season where an incredibly banged-up roster appears to be fading. Orlov has limited control over where he can be dealt with a five-team no-trade list....

20. Nick Jensen, Washington Capitals

Age: 32 | Position: RD

PuckPedia contract status: $2.5-million cap hit, pending UFA

CJ’s take: Another Capitals defenceman on an expiring contract that is starting to draw some interest.

Jensen is a capable second-pair defender who brings added utility on the penalty kill.

Lol a competent GM bent on winning a Championship would have rebuilt 2 years ago.

They clearly have other motives.
We should have rebuilt with a 36-15-5 record? That's just baloney, that record would have us 4th in the league right now.

What should have happened is GMBM should have tried to get an actual NHL starter in net.

As @AlexBrovechkin8 mentioned EK isn't an enigma, he's been consistently great except for when he's been injured. The comparison to Kuznetsov is laughable.

I don't know if he's likely to be injured again or not. But if he isn't, then I can't see him being any worse than a very good #1D, if not a Norris contender again next season. He's the type of guy who you think long and hard about and should at least be under heavy consideration by GMBM.

It's amazing that GMBM and Ted just kept assuming that no one would get older and worse. Like somehow all our players would be the exception to the aging curve. They made absolutely no proactive moves to get younger and faster.

Criminal mismanagement that would have resulted in firings and purges in a more demanding hockey market.

It’s ok Buddies (Vox Machina reference)…..it’s going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

Dare I say healthy Carlson is the least of their problems with expensive players from the level of play standpoint?

Agreed. There's no reason for the Caps to do anyone dirty like that.

Backstrom and the Caps agreed to the contract. It's what it is.
I'll add that, as I mentioned a couple of days ago, Backstrom's deal was plainly retroactive from the start. It was payment for past performance. Is it frustrating to have that much money locked up in a guy who isn't playing at that level? Sure. But it's not a surprise to us, and I'm sure management expected it too.

You know who is being paid to perform at his salary though? Kuzy. That's why, IMO, even though makes less than 19, he's the bigger drag on the team.

The famous poet Eminem said it best.

This is your moment, and every single minute you spend
Try to hold on to it 'cause you may never get it again
So while you're in it, try to get as much shit as you can
And when your run is over just admit when it's at its end

Is there anyone out there willing to defend Laviolette? He keeps trotting out these tired vets. He continues to marginalize our young players.

WTF do you have to do to get f***ing fired?

Thing is though if they knew that the Backstrom contract was paying for past performance, that makes developing young forwards even more important to make up for his contract bloat. And we aren’t really doing that.

But anyway it’s time to do something. Fire the coach, make a trade, sign Frank, call up McMichael/Protas/Snively, bench Eller or Sheary or Oshie, move Backstrom to wing, put Dowd on the powerplay, i mean just make a f*cking change man. Anything will do. Anything at all!

Like they can't just keep playing and trotting out the same line up. Do Something!

I mean, it was definitely time to move at least one of the core. Oshie or Backstrom would've made sense.

So, uh, Anaheim has two more points than Washington in CY2023. The Ducks have played one additional game. Yikes. Yikes. Yikes.

The Caps are already down to 11th worst league-wide in points percentage. They'll get Ovechkin back here soon but if they do indeed sell eighth seems like the earliest they'd be slated to pick (pre-lottery). Gut the defense and PK, slim down the wings further, give them a reason to loaf even further and a bottom ten finish seems highly likely. Firing Laviolette would seem to be the only card they've really got left to play if that's something they want to avoid.

I get that point, but it wasn't the time for a rebuild.

This is the first time the Caps have actually been a bad team, not even capable of making the playoffs (probably)

Took about 20 tries just now to get this at:
