I think Sammy has upside also, but he’s just run out of time here.

Like many before him, the salary cap and the system (arbitration) is forcing them to cut bait. I can’t imagine he had any good will left with the Club. It is what it is.

I hope he puts it together somewhere else.
Agreed change of venue would have helped. We've seen that before with many a former 1st round pick between clubs. I wonder how the covid years impacted his development. Even if a prospect does not pan out with the capitals I never don't stop rooting for their success in the league. Sure it is irritating when one finally turns the corner but some times a fresh start with a new club just helps the development along.

Well the caps open goaltender job certainly has got more attractive.

My guess is Sammy sees the writing on the wall. I think it would be best for everyone if he moved on.

I know you are just the messenger but yeah...that annoys the hell out of me. It is a beyond dumb franchise goal.....the franchise should always be trying to win or re-build, not tred water just to help one player meet a personal goal.
I should have added that I am not a fan of that either. I think where I come to the middle as it just takes for a special team to win the cup. Things have to come together in the playoffs and no amount of foster tinkering can guarantee that. Can they add/blend in enough team speed where everything jells. Love Oshie but just feel like he is chewing up too much salary.

I do see a team that will make the playoffs and the team will be serious at the trade deadline. But naturally they are top heavy with older players making a lot of money. Think of letting Holtby walk what it allowed them do to spend about nothing on goaltending for a while. Hindsight it doesn't look that great. The two covid playoff years/team inexplicable just kinda mailing it in also really feels like a waste.

I sure hope the Caps and Sammy's agent do try to sort out a deal still. He would just be a fool to take anything below his QO number before he explores the open market.

So the talk is looking more and more like Kuemper signs with us, Campbell signs with the Oilers and the Leafs trade for Matt Murray with some of his salary retained. If so, the question becomes at what costs?

Just something that I have thought of just now, if Kuemper gets $6 million per, are the Caps gonna give Sammy $3 million? What if the Murray trade doesn't happen with the Leafs and the Caps were to trade Sammy to the Leafs instead?
Isn’t that a moot point now with no qualifying offer?

I think Rittich would be a good target for backup goalie. Experienced, cheap, and competent if you believe last season was an outlier.

I think it was smart to not lock themselves into a $3 million+ contract with Samsonov.

I’m with @Langway with maybe targeting a guy like Eric Comrie. Good AHL numbers, good numbers in a backup role in Winnipeg last year, and projected to only get $1.25M next year per Evolving Hockey.

If they are going to get Kuemper then going cheap on a backup makes all the sense in the world. And Comrie seems like a good bet to at least provide solid backup numbers, if not a little better.

Murray to the Leafs tells me Kuemper to Washington is a done deal and his agent has probably made it clear to everyone else just waiting for noon Wednesday to sign it. Colorado very likely could have allowed Kuemper to talk to other teams..it's allowed if your current team OKs it. Colorado is a well run and classy organization, they made it clear he's not coming back and that they respect him and wish him the best... no reason to think they'd hold him back from it after there were no takers for trades to his rights at the draft.

Yeah, after learning about Samsonov's contract and QO in the Samsonov thread this is pretty clearly more about avoiding that than any sort of death sentence. They may move on, they may not, but at the end of the day he's just not a 3 million dollar goaltender and that's probably got a little something to do with the trade market as well.

I wonder what Sonny Milano will cost? I'd be all over him like flies on shit if he's cheap. Exactly the type of player we lacked in the playoffs. Pretty much an older accomplished version of the majority of what we selected in the draft this year. Dump Sheary pay Sonny.

Haven't been more disgusted with a caps tandem ever I think. So glad that both dumpster fires are gone. Between the asshat coach that they gave the reins too after trots and these 2 goalies, the last 4 years of ovis career were wasted the same way gmgm wasted the first 5 or 6 years with 3ormore and seven ahl defenseman. Ovis career is almost a tragedy of pisspoor management. Whoever they sign/ trade for automatically is better the two they lost.

The past few seasons we’ve had a Boston legend, a New York legend, a New Jersey legend ( :sarcasm: )

It’s time. Pittsburgh is next.

funny to watch all of this chatter on the boards. There are tons of conversations going on that we aren’t privy to. GMBM talking to Samy - may have a deal already agreed upon to bring him back at 1M to 1.5M. Could be Keumper deal is already done because Caps talked to Sakik. There is a lot of shit that is going to happen between now and Wednesday night.

I’m actually pretty encouraged. I think Caps have (had) a plan and they are working it! No idea where we’ll land but i am convinced that the roster is going to look a lot different just as GMBM said at end of season.

EH has Kuemper at 6 x $6.3M or 7 x $6.6M.

I wouldn’t be shocked at $7 million if they wanted to get a verbal commitment early so they have time to work on the rest of their UFA/trade plans.
