My guess is Sammy sees the writing on the wall. I think it would be best for everyone if he moved on.

I know you are just the messenger but yeah...that annoys the hell out of me. It is a beyond dumb franchise goal.....the franchise should always be trying to win or re-build, not tred water just to help one player meet a personal goal.
I think some of you are making more out of the goal chase than Management to be honest.

Samsonov will not be missed.

Man, if they give a big contract to Kuemper, who I think kind of sucks, instead of going gremlin mode by going after Malkin, I'm gonna be Big Sad.

Haven't been more disgusted with a caps tandem ever I think. So glad that both dumpster fires are gone. Between the asshat coach that they gave the reins too after trots and these 2 goalies, the last 4 years of ovis career were wasted the same way gmgm wasted the first 5 or 6 years with 3ormore and seven ahl defenseman. Ovis career is almost a tragedy of pisspoor management. Whoever they sign/ trade for automatically is better the two they lost.
This is an overreaction. We were the best team going into the playoffs a number of those years and did win a cup. Could have done better? Sure, but outside of 2-3 teams, who would you have swapped the last 15 years with?

funny to watch all of this chatter on the boards. There are tons of conversations going on that we aren’t privy to. GMBM talking to Samy - may have a deal already agreed upon to bring him back at 1M to 1.5M. Could be Keumper deal is already done because Caps talked to Sakik. There is a lot of shit that is going to happen between now and Wednesday night.

I’m actually pretty encouraged. I think Caps have (had) a plan and they are working it! No idea where we’ll land but i am convinced that the roster is going to look a lot different just as GMBM said at end of season.
If Sammy is taking 1-1.5, he’s a beggar at this point. I’d be surprised.

I‘m encouraged because this is meaningful change swapping out the entire platoon.

A few more really meaningful moves left to go.

If your referring to regular season success, yea they were among the best. Gmgm bargain bin shopped for dmen for the first 5 6 years when he had the best player in the world. The 2 years losing the pens and then finally beating them were when management finally figured it out. The caps would have another cup if they had beaten the pens one of those 2 years. Imo management wasted years going with cheap options in important positions. The last two years being the biggest example. They knew both goalies were shit before last season. Doubled down. They should have made trades to try to win now or they should have never resigned ovi and Backstrom. Doesn't matter now, just glad those goalies are gone

Absolutely GMGM could have done better. He believed he could draft or trade to fill a Cup winning D Corp and he couldn’t because he did neither well enough. He lost perspective.

GMBM blew a season last year, but both guys were right on the cusp and neither could grab the starter role. Not doubling down as much as probably not thinking the options available were better.

Were there other great goalie trades or free agents we missed out on recently? None come to mind for me.

I cant think of one move that the franchise has made that could even be thought about as something to help Ovi with the goal chase instead of winning the cup. Such a stupid narrative based on absolutely 0 facts.
Keeping Forsythe and his powerplay formation that is built around Ovechkin, even as its overall effectiveness as a unit had declined.

Along those lines, keeping Carlson even though Carlson has been a liability in four consecutive playoffs.

Exactly. Both were on the cusp. We were in salary cap hell and you hope two professionals will battle it out and make each other better. To me it was a good calculated risk that failed. I put that more on the players than the GM.

The caps powerplay has been more or less built around Ovechkin since 2005. When you have the best shooter in the world you gotta let them shoot right? And like it or not Carlson is the best defenseman the Caps drafted in a very very long time. He is locked up on a pretty reasonable deal. There are many reasons why they would choose to keep him.

Thoughts on Cam Talbot from Minny? I don't think they are actively looking to move him but is he preferable to Kuemper?

It’s Kuemper + Back up

I still think Fucale is the back up right now. That leaves Stevenson / Shepard / Bjorklund for Hershey and SC. Three goalies between the two farm teams is the right mix typically. If they confident enough in Fucale I think he should get the job. League minimum guy. And he could probably at minimum perform at least as well as Samsonov did last season, which is good enough.

Maybe that leaves enough room for a middle 6 guy or depth dman. I still wonder if they have an eye on Jarnkrok as well

I really like Talbot, I think he's a great competitor and his underlying numbers have always been great. However he's 35 and there's a good chance we would be looking for a goalie again next season. Guerin has also stated fairly sternly that they won't be moving him.

I think Kuemper is who we're getting, which I'm fine with really. I love Kuemper, I watched him play for the Rebels when he was the best junior goalie in Canada and have followed him pretty closely. He's got that upper tier skill but he does lack consistency so he'll fit right in here with every goalie we've ever had.

I'm more curious about the cap number. Jeff Marek is thinking Campbell signs in Edmonton for close to the Ullmark numbers (4 x 5 million AAV), so it'll be interesting to see where Kuemper lines out. Likely a bit more. I'd guess somewhere around $5.5 - $6 million per for like 5 years.

I'm also fine giving Fucale the chance to back up. He's put in a lot of work, he's dirt cheap, he's played well and he can be replaced easily if he falters.

Ugh. Aren't we showing our hands a bit by not qualifying Samsonov? Does this mean we're basically definitely getting Keumper (for way too much money).

The forwards need an upgrade. Spending on Goaltending is dumb, especially if its not elite.

Sign Malkin and have him conveniently get an injury when NB wants to come back and have both for playoffs. Why not?

Might as well sign Phil Kessel alongside Malkin. Keeps up both the trend of acquiring every ex-Penguin and acquiring players who peaked 10 years ago. We're gonna be the surefire favorites to win the 2013 Stanley Cup!

This is a good example of my stance with him. Judging success is easy, judging methodology is hard, but I've seldom looked at his moves and not at least seen the idea behind it if it were to work correctly. When it doesn't, and sometimes it doesn't, his ability to pivot is desirable and not really something to hold against a GM.
