An unfortunate side effect of last night's shenanigans is the revival of old arguments between posters that don't believe any level of physicality is useful in a roster, and posters who think that a team should be at least 30% hard-nosed players.

There is value in physicality on the roster. But it isn't going to stop Tom Wilson being a psychopath. Really only the league can do that, unless he collectively becomes so unpopular with players around the league that he becomes borderline unemployable like DeAngelo or Voynov. But given that Bertuzzi continued to find employment, that seems unlikely.

I can't like posts anymore, but good post.

Class with a very large hint of primal urges and emotional connections to a logo that is an inanimate object that neither knows or cares about you - and the people making fortunes to wear said logo to also not know or care about you.

Greatest sport on earth, but well past time for the sport to think about what its desired future will be. That, or the NHL is no better than the NFL and their, "we care about the safety of our players and take concussions seriously! (Nevermind overlooking bounties on players and having ESPN roll constant highlights and glorifying of the worst tackling players imaginable somehow finally connecting on that one big, 'blow-em-up' hit!")

The NHL is very seriously teetering on the same edge of unbelievability. It can take a major step forward in rectifying that image tomorrow.

NHL has officially lost all credibility when it comes to suggesting they care about player safety. Here is a guy who has now 7 slaps on the wrist, including one he literally whined his shitty head off to get reduced. At what point should they say, "enough is enough?"

Absolutely disgusted with this continued joke of a league. And for all you who keep suggesting the league is soft and the Rangers need a bunch of talentless goons to teach him a lesson, I'll reiterate once more:

The ONLY appropriate response to buffoons and dickheads like Tom Wilson isn't BIGGER or MORE dickheads like Tom Wilson. It's to eliminate the Tom Wilson and Tom Wilson-like dickheads from the sport.

I got some pretty bad hostility at CAA. One guy was just being a drunk assholes, everyone else was fine though. Didn't help that we lost 6-1 in a playoff game.
Ohh good/bad memories from those CAA days lol. I understand when its a rivalry, but walking into a Caps game as a Devils fan and getting that much hatred was utterly bizarre. 3 hours of harassment.

That's ignoring wilsons combo hair pull and slew foot.

No I mentioned that I thought Wilson’s actions were crossing The line. I’m not ignoring his actions I’m just saying Panarian had other options beside jumping on his back and, in fact jumping on his back was probably the most dangerous option he could take.

GM gets the players.

Coach plays the players he's given.

You can quibble with player usage, but not about who is responsible for personnel.
I know! I also know coaches tell management if they want certain players. My point is the Rangers have lacked a physical presence all year. I don't think Quinn was beating down Gorton's door or blowing up his cell phone trying to get some physical players on the team. If he was trying, then he's not to blame.

This decision by Parros is literally to pour fuel on the flames to create more thuggery, more goonery, more idiocy.

Best course of action is to beef up the squad with strong, capable players. Ignore Wilson for now and start winning. If the Rangers goon up Parros will be pleased as punch, he lives for that shit it made his career.

I agree with how to handle this in the offseason. But in the meantime, we have a game tomorrow night. And they have Wilson, Hathaway, Dillon, Chara and company and we have a bunch of softees and Brendan Smith and a bunch of rookies to protect.

Is Stephane Quintal still part of the NHL's Department of Player Saftey?
If so there might be some bias. I believe he has a history with this organization and not a good one. If the story is correct it goes like this, when he was a player here he gave an interview to a Quebec newspaper during the off-season where he inferred that he wished he had not signed with the Rangers. During the following pre-season John Davidson who was the color commentator for MSG at the time outed him for that interview and stated on air that anyone who wasn't proud to ware the teams jersey shouldn't be here. Right after that Quintal was traded.
Do some digging Uncle Larry. If this is all true, expose it. Let the world know.
P.S. : Spent the $12.00 USD and joined. No more pop ups so far and my screen isn’t flashing, glitching and crashing. Worth it.

But this is the problem with the thinking "bad thing happened once let's address it". That Carcillo fight happened with Avery there and it potentially cost us a 40 goal player because the team panicked and drafted McIlrath.

We've drafted numerous "soft" & "skilled" players who've flopped from Peter Ferraro to Pavel Brendl to Bobby Sanguinetti to Lias Andersson and many others. Yet the cautionary tale is always that because McIlrath didn't make it, we should never draft a physical player again. This doesn't make sense to me. You absolutely need to draft for skill, especially in today's game, but you also need grit on your roster. Had McIlrath not hurt his knee initially and developed into a slightly better skater his presence on the roster, even as a 5th or 6th defenseman, would have helped provide the grit that has been missing from the Rangers over that last decade. In hindsight, the McIlrath pick didn't work out. But had we not drafted McIlrath, who is to say we would have necessarily drafted Tarensenko? Brandon Gormley, for instance, was highly touted and went before him.

The NHL is just such a mickey mouse league. Panarin is the star player of their most valuable franchise in their top US market. You'd think if there was ever a time for them to "overreact" with a punishment it would be something like this.

Small star player is assaulted by many times over repeat offender. It was an alley oop for them to send a message to Wilson and more importantly to the league that stuff like this isn't okay. But of course they didn't, we knew they wouldn't and it's just more of the same with their micky mouse shit.

And then they wonder why McDavid goes headhunting himself while being constantly assaulted all night every single game.

You have to play with the rules given and it's clear that we will need a more physical presence. The option of doing nothing isn't an option even though some seem to want to go in that direction.

Toughness isn't entirely gone from the NHL until there are penalties. Until that day comes, you need it.

I haven't read the full thread, but I 'm pretty sure there are some people who are demanding we need a guy in our lineup who can punch guys like Wilson in the face.

Wilson can fight, he's damn good at it. And punching him won't stop him from doing his BS. What we need, is the league to step up and suspend these assholes, hit them in their wallet. I woulnd't be surprised, if in the next owners or GM meeting they would be calling for Parros's head. That f***ing asshole has been hit in the too many times, and refuses to suspend people because of "hockey code". f*** him, he's deliberately trying to force more injuries in this league.

EDIT: did delete some of my comments, one should never wish injury on anyone, no matter how much of an asshole he is.
Like I said, the appropriate response from a team that is now out of the playoffs to the league refusing to protect its star players is to 2 hand chop the caps stars across the wrists until one of them is out for the playoffs.

While I do think skating is more of the trend in today's NHL, I wouldn't mind a guy like Ryan Reaves in our 4th line instead of Bett f***ing Howden.

I don't think we need that type of a player when we are competing for a Stanley Cup, but right now? Yes,

I normally wouldn’t agree, but given the 5k fine, seems there are no repercussions so why not?

Ryan Reaves is an abberration in today's NHL. The guy is actually a good 4th line player, let along what he does with his hands when he drops the gloves.

You think having 6 of Adam Fox on D would be a good thing? The lineup can support 2 or 3 of his type before your D gets run over. Fox gets away with it because he is smarter than everybody else and uses his body positioning to give him an advantage. Also, he scores a lot. If your D aren't physical, then they better contribute in other ways, which is primarily going to be scoring. Miller, even for his size, gets pushed around and has zero snarl to his game. His offense better bloom or he better get some nasty in his game. Otherwise, he will be the next Marek Malik.

It is hard to take this seriously. A rookie, who has yet to fill in and spend serious time with the Rangers training staff, should be traded? :biglaugh:

That's just the lay of the land right now. This team isn't exactly built for the playoffs... yet.

Who just got flaming warning points for wading into the main boards cesspool? This guy.
lol, I can't bring myself to go to the main boards, I haven't in years but good on all you peeps for getting put in timeout for speaking your mind. It's insane they're even handing out infractions during this. It's a pretty important topic considering the rep. Wilson has and what he did to a league superstar. Their reaction is pretty odd, imho.

If his personality is passive and he is very unlikely to ever be more than a stick checker? Yup. Before everyone else figures it out.

Of all the things you're bitching about Adam Fox?

Yeah I do want 6 Adam Fox on defense. Without question.
At what point did I complain about Fox? I would love to have 2 or three of him with complimentary sandpaper defensive guys to pair with him. Not sure 6 would be a good idea going against a heavy cycling team in a 7 game series.

The talk of retaliation on this board against Wilson is a little bit like the guys who try to punch over the linesmen once they have broken up a fight. They try and "look tough" but.... no- that is not tough. Who on the Rangers exactly, would be even willing to stand up to Wilson? More importantly, who, if they did feel like they could, would be able to actually defend themselves in a fight? Those calling for Wilson to be "taken out" are just reacting emotionally and should be better than that.

Rangers can't retaliate on Wednesday because they don't have that roster. Aside from Smith, I honestly can't think of a single player who could even try. That's the sad part.

Lias Andersson was not considered a "soft & skilled" player, if anything he was a safe guy with sandpaper. I'd much rather go for skill in the first round than a guy with bottom 6 or bottom pair potential because he's a tough guy. If you want sandpaper go for it later in the draft.

Just love John Scott. Could not agree more with is take on the whole situation. What an absolute embarrassment Wilson and the NHL are. Now that the precedent has been set it is absolutely open season on any star player. Just disgusting.

Deterrents are a myth.

Wilson will not behave differently, no matter who's on the Rangers roster.

Deterrents may or may not be a myth. There's no question in my mind that Nick Fotiu and Joey Kocur were deterrents. Darren Langdon answered every call. Others, like Domi or Boogaard, may have been a sideshow. But we're in a different era now.

Tom Wilson is a bully and opportunist who enjoys picking on smaller players. He is not a great fighter, but he plays in a league where there are very few players capable of standing up to him. I see him as a coward, and he might very well back down if there was an intimidating presence on the other side.

But it isn't necessarily all about deterrence. When your team is taken advantage of physically, and there's no response, your team invariably folds. I've seen this happen to the Rangers more often than not, for the better part of 5 decades. Deterrent or not, the Rangers will continue to fold until they're capable of responding to this kind of intimidation.

Yep. The league had their chance to hand out punishment and handle it themselves, especially knowing the Caps and Rangers play each other tomorrow. They refused to do so, so the Rangers being a team whose season is over, should absolutely be going out there with the intention to get some form of retribution.
