No I mentioned that I thought Wilson’s actions were crossing The line. I’m not ignoring his actions I’m just saying Panarian had other options beside jumping on his back and, in fact jumping on his back was probably the most dangerous option he could take.

Standing up for your fellow human against a psychotic bully like Wilson is never a wrong move in my book. In this case, Panarin jumped in to get Wilson away from a defenceless Strome being pommeled on.

Ryan Reaves is an abberration in today's NHL. The guy is actually a good 4th line player, let along what he does with his hands when he drops the gloves.
Yup. Tom Wilson is as well. He's the perfect power forward, if it wasn't for this BS. He can score, he can hit, he can skate. Such a shame. I blame the NHL for not hitting these guys financially enough.

The precedent this creates for this years playoffs is insane when you think about it. The playoffs always allow more than the regular season. MORE. Imagine someone like Reaves coming in and grabbing Rantanen and doing this? $5,000 fine. That's WELL WORTH IT.
Almost seems like they're trying to set up the Caps for another cup ....

Just love John Scott. Could not agree more with is take on the whole situation. What an absolute embarrassment Wilson and the NHL are. Now that the precedent has been set it is absolutely open season on any star player. Just disgusting.

Is John Scott available to coach next season? Great points by him!

Wayne Simmonds is UFA next year.......and after last night, his stock just went up.

It's up to the NHLPA as well. They can all feel outraged around the league, but they are the ones who negotiated this maximum fine of 5k. And the GM's and owners dont want their guys to get suspended, while those suspensions could actually hit the players in their wallets.

Either the NHL starts suspending these players more, or in the next CBA they make it so that you can fine players more without suspending them. Hit Tom Wilson with a 300k fine here, he's not going to pull that BS again in a while. Simple as that.

An unfortunate side effect of last night's shenanigans is the revival of old arguments between posters that don't believe any level of physicality is useful in a roster, and posters who think that a team should be at least 30% hard-nosed players.

There is value in physicality on the roster. But it isn't going to stop Tom Wilson being a psychopath. Really only the league can do that, unless he collectively becomes so unpopular with players around the league that he becomes borderline unemployable like DeAngelo or Voynov. But given that Bertuzzi continued to find employment, that seems unlikely.

Wilson, like others in his vein, has deep seeded issues that wouldn't be addressed without prolonged therapy. Otherwise you see people like him on their best behavior after receiving some punishment only to continue to be recidivists. He can't help himself.

Onus is really on the league, his employer, and his teammates to try and get through to him but it's obvious they really don't feel like it's a big problem for them.

Asking players to police themselves is nice but it rarely happens. Case in point and looking at it logically:

Wilson has hurt players with dirty plays on the Bruins, Pens (multiple times), Flyers, Devils, Islanders, Senators, Blues (twice), Blue Jackets, Knights, Avalanche. Some of those teams have some tough players themselves and still he stands. The only real player to take it upon himself was Reeves. Probably felt good at the time but it didn't change Wilson at all.

Lias Andersson was not considered a "soft & skilled" player, if anything he was a safe guy with sandpaper. I'd much rather go for skill in the first round than a guy with bottom 6 or bottom pair potential because he's a tough guy. If you want sandpaper go for it later in the draft.

I agree. It's just that it disturbs me that McIlrath alone is the poster boy for failed draft picks. There've been others.

Is it just the league or is the NHLPA too? I get the feeling the players association is on the same page as the league. All this stuff is negotiated in the CBA I believe.

I'm annoyed and disgusted in this league, but there is nothing the Rangers can do right now. We have no one that can retaliate against these big teams. Boston, Washington, even the Isles have put us in our place physically this year.

I'm sure they are gonna try and get a useless enforcer this summer, but like all issues with this team the answer is really needing more time in the oven. We have big kids developing well, but they are kids. In a few years when everyone fills out, we're gonna be imposing the same punishment back on these teams and they will be a shell of who they are now.

Waiting is frustrating, but it's part of the rebuild. We aren't the only team who lacks that physical presence.

I was so pissed I had to make a video. I tried. I'm a musician, not a sports broadcaster, but I did my best to comment on this. I may do more of these.

Rangers need to sign him for a game

I don’t think the people running the DoPS are intelligent or organized enough to “set a precedent” with this.

If a Ranger turned around and did this to Backstrom tomorrow they’d get suspended.

The department reviews every incident in a vacuum. That couldn’t be more obvious given that Tom Wilson is a level above a repeat offender.

Again- not saying Panarin did the wrong thing. He did exactly what he should have by standing up for his teammate. He just chose the wrong form of intervention. I'm trying to look at the subtly here. I believe that its analogous to a scorer coming in on a breakaway and taking a wrist shot from the corner. Sure, taking the shot is the right move( standing up for a teammate) but no one would say that was the best option to score( jumping on Wilson's back was not the best option to defend his teammate.) That's my only point. Come in and push the guys Knees out with your stick, poke him the chest, push his head down, push his helmet over his head, throw an elbow into his head but don't jump on his back. I was always taught by coaches that you want to keep your skates under you during a scrum or fray because you have the most protection that way. Panarin did the right thing but used the worst technique he could have.

John Scott nailed this on the head.

This is a fireable course of action taken by everyone involved in the NHL DOS. They should all be relieved of their duties.

I'd call Tony DeAngelo up today, tell him he has one game to start to make his wrongs right, and tell him just to run around for 20 minutes and play like an absolute rat. Slash, slewfoot, whack ankles and wrists, and jump in as the third man for every single post whistle scrum that he's out there for.

First minute of the game I'm sending Howden or DiGuiseppe in right at Tom Wilson like a heat seeking missile with an elbow right towards his head. Doesn't need to connect, just send the message. I'd also send someone to accidentally on purpose slewfoot their goalie on a forecheck when Washington has the puck behind the net.

The only way to send the message that this isn't going to be tolerated is by going out and taking matters into their own hands, since the NHL administration isn't going to lift a finger and let the game's biggest rat and coward get away with a slap on the wrist for almost severely injuring two of our players that were absolutely unable to defend themselves.

I'm quite possibly a huge homer and am being dramatic, but I think this has the potential to be a watershed, defining moment for the league.

This is quite a precedent that what Wilson, a multiple repeat offender, did was worthy of a $5k fine. It is absolutely open season on star players in any scrum. Why shouldn't teams gameplan around that if all they are getting is 2 min shorthanded and pocket change? If you take McDavid out of a series that's well worth it.

that is all they do, get a goon. when was the last time this team had a physical power foward in the top 9? and please don't say Rick Nash.. Dubinsky and Callahan mainly. ?? we need to stop settling for some NO SKILLED enforcers why other teams can have the Tkachuk, Landeskog, Benns, Lee, Foligno, Evander Kane, Dustin Brown, skilled guys with grit. we have not had this since Carcillo Dubinsky Callahan Dorsett. Prust who can play a regular shift and NOT be like the Tanner Glass, Steve McKenna, Derek Booggaard types. pretty sad if you ask me. grit in top 9 is a need. it is sad that Kreider is pretty soft for his size.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think you need to "go get an enforcer". Certainly there must be an Ogie Ogilthorpe somewhere in your pipeline that you can dress for the 6 games you play against the Caps next year...

I'd throw him out there the first time Wilson steps on the ice, and let him beat the living sh*t out of Tommy Boy... And the next time Wilson even looks at one of your guys the wrong way, you do it again...

He'll learn eventually.

And that individual would be a martyr in my book. I'd gladly take the suspension.
