I'm quite possibly a huge homer and am being dramatic, but I think this has the potential to be a watershed, defining moment for the league.

This is quite a precedent that what Wilson, a multiple repeat offender, did was worthy of a $5k fine. It is absolutely open season on star players in any scrum. Why shouldn't teams gameplan around that if all they are getting is 2 min shorthanded and pocket change? If you take McDavid out of a series that's well worth it.
Exactly, that's what John Scott nails in his video. This sends the message that you can target the stars in any scrum and try and cheapshot antics with them and you will basically face no punishment. Look what Wilson did, which was egregious, and all he got was a 5k fine. This sends the message to every bottom six player that it's okay to target Matthews, McDavid, Pastrnak and other skilled star players. They'll look at it like "Well if Wilson only got a 5k fine for THAT, then I can really push the limit in every scrum."

It's a bad decision that could potentially have lasting impact across the league.

BTW, rapists and child molesters are seen as the lowest of the low in prison. Why? Because women and children are seen as the most vulnerable people and it's considered chicken shit to abuse them. Meanwhile the NHL has less honor the prisoners where they're celebrating a couple of skill players who have never been in a fight in their lives getting attacked.

It's up to the NHLPA as well. They can all feel outraged around the league, but they are the ones who negotiated this maximum fine of 5k. And the GM's and owners dont want their guys to get suspended, while those suspensions could actually hit the players in their wallets.

Either the NHL starts suspending these players more, or in the next CBA they make it so that you can fine players more without suspending them. Hit Tom Wilson with a 300k fine here, he's not going to pull that BS again in a while. Simple as that.
Isn't 5k the max allowed on the agreement with the NHL and NHLPA?

An unfortunate side effect of last night's shenanigans is the revival of old arguments between posters that don't believe any level of physicality is useful in a roster, and posters who think that a team should be at least 30% hard-nosed players.

There is value in physicality on the roster. But it isn't going to stop Tom Wilson being a psychopath. Really only the league can do that, unless he collectively becomes so unpopular with players around the league that he becomes borderline unemployable like DeAngelo or Voynov. But given that Bertuzzi continued to find employment, that seems unlikely.

Sam & Joe spent more time sucking up to Wilson (they've done that in previous Cap games too, the love him) than being upset about him beating the crap out of Ranger stars. "There isn't a team in the NHL that wouldn't have him on their roster". Meh, retire their butts.

I don't care if the Rangers give up 19 power play goals en route to a 25-0 loss as long as a pound of flesh is taken and one of the caps stars is made unavailable for the playoffs.

I honestly hope it'll be Wilson unavailable, kind of unfair to be taken out on their stars. But would love for a career ender. If the league won't do it someone has to do it the hard way.

glad you’re doing well.

I thought it was poorly timed. I think the point Joe was trying to make is that Wilson isn't Zac Rinaldo or Dan Carcillo. If he plays the game clean he's a great hockey player, but he just simply cannot keep his cool.

So I think the argument is that Wilson doesn't 'need' to go over the line to be effective. His career isn't contingent on being a cheapshot artist like Rinaldo.

The more I think about it the more I think the NHL is only looking at the Buch portion of the event. I could see how, based on the incident alone, punching him twice while on the ice, could maybe in the most liberal way ever be warranted of only 5,000 dollars. What I can't understand is if they look at the entirety of the scrum, Wilson committed multiple other dirty plays like tossing a helmetless Panarin to the ice. It almost looks like the league only looked at the first part and then made their decision. If that's in fact true- the NHL needs to look at the entire scrum. I wonder if they just did not deem tossing Panarin to the ice to be part of this situation? They really need to explain themselves.

If this is ignored( second video) then the NHL has absolutely lost their minds.

He was sucking up to him for real for real every time we've played them, Sam too.

Totally agree. Nothing worse as a fan than watching your team get physically but cleanly get manhandled by our biggest rival AND lose without compete. Then summarily get their star player pile drived into the MSG garage, fold up like a pill bug AND get outscored 4-0 after that.

Flashbacks of Dale Rolphe, Tomas Sandstrom and Marion Gaborik all over again for me.

Yes, for fines. But if you are suspended, you forfeit your salary. Tom Wilson got suspended 7 games earlier this season. He forfeited over 300k of his salary because of that.
Gotcha. You were going with suspension AND fine.

I love old school hockey. Not gonna apologize to anybody for that, but not gonna lie, your idea is an absolute solution to the problem.

'Roid rage. Hope the NHL keeps testing him at inopportune times and bust his ass. That would be more humiliating than any suspension where he could pretend to be a victim.

The nhl has officially deemed that a player being slammed to the ice by his hair, punched multiple times on the ice, picked up again and being slammed down again onto the ice is a normal hockey play that happens every game.

guess who is an UFA this summer, another no skilled goon will be signed like the Rangers usually do

It's really offputting that they didn't even mention anything that happened with Panarin. I truly hope Sather, Drury, JD and Gorton are voicing their displeasure to the powers that be.
