Solid play losing a 1/2C for a backup goalie. That’s like some generationally bad Asset Management. IOW don’t hold your breath.

So you think the best course of action is to essentially use the same roster as last year? Now THAT would be generationally bad management.

I don't endorse trading him for that reason but lets not play like Kuzy has been fantastic. He does stupid shit off the ice and plays like he doesn't care half the time.
These are obviously valid criticisms. The problem is, the Caps will not get a better 2C without drafting one. What do you propose trading for one? If we don’t have the assets, or shouldn’t be trading them, for a 2C then you have to do what is necessary to make it work with Kuznetsov. For Better or For Worse.

You aren't trading him for the space to sign a backup goalie. You're trading him to add the goalie and then the rest to upgrade your lineup. How you upgrade of "shake up" that lineup is up to GMBM. Thats why he has the job.

It really depends on how you think Backstrom performs next season. Is he the Backstrom, when fully healthy who showed what he can do in the first half last season? Because someone has to be #1 C. I don't see us getting a #1 C from outside this offseason unless we pay through the nose. Kuznetsov's nose.

It’s a simple calculus.
Which of the following is a higher proiority;
1. Trading Kuznetsov for Cap Space
2. Using Cap Space for a backup goalie.
If 2 is actually the highest priority there are plenty of things that can replace 1 in that equation with far smaller opportunity cost.

You’re avoiding perhaps the most likely scenario that Backstrom is actually in the beginning of a gradual decline in production and we don’t have a 1C or 2C replacement organically. What do we do if we’ve traded Kuznetsov before this coming season in THAT scenario?

I'm in the camp where I would rather keep Kuzy and have him perform. I don't want to trade him unless we absolutely have to. A motivated Kuzy easily outweighs any other scenario. BY FAR. It's just a matter of getting him motivated again... which I have no answers to.

I'm already of the mind that while I love Backstrom, we need a true #1, and with the options that are in front of us... that only means Kuzy needs to do what he needs to do.

Anndddd I realize I'm probably not making any sense. Had a little too many whiskeys. My apologies!

Motivated Kuzy isn't going to happen. It isn't in him, we've had multiple coaches try to get him to play consistent.

If it helps I agree with basically all you’ve said here.

Mika Z is available apparently?

He would be a lot of what we need

do it GMBM

I don't care if anyone takes it seriously or not. It's a message board. Which apparently some people take way too serious when they start looking up post history than being all hurt cause I should've posted a celebratory something after the Stanley Cup on here.

the "but whatever. You do you." is funny after you complain about it.
It plainly shows you are a troll simply trying to rile people up. We’ve had a few like you come and go. Most weren’t even Caps fans.

Don't know how Ted or BMac feel about paying someone who won't play, but the Caps could solve a lot of their problems by acquiring an LTIRetired contract. There are several out there that aren't wholly stupid money with only a short term left. (Including some on teams who aren't expected to be contenders so may not need the cap space.)

Obviously the timing and footwork needed to properly utilize that option is a bit fancy, but I trust their capologists can make it work.

I don’t think that’s enough. I think one of Hagelin or Kempny would need to go as well.

Stop. The choice is not and never has been between keeping or trading good Kuzy. The choice is to trade the Kuzy don't care they have had for 3 years or keep him and hope good Kuzy hasn't already retired.

So, lets ask the question another way. Are you good with keeping Kuzy doesn't care? Are you good relying on a player that you will go as far as he can carry you who is on a 3 year run of not really caring?

To me there is close to zero chance that whatever Kuzy brings back in a trade, it will be anywhere close to Kuzy's potential production right here this season.

To trade Kuzy would be almost tantamount to closing the window unless GMBM makes amazing moves elsewhere (which he could). So as remote of a chance there is that Kuzy regains his form, there is even a smaller chance that his trade replacement will provide what we need to get over the top. Still a chance, but unlikely

I see. So, if the Caps go where Kuzy will take them and you admit that is most likely the ditch, you keep him? Ok

It's a hard choice I know. But it's a choice of either Kuzy or .50 cents on the dollar Kuzy.

Most here still not ready to accept that neither Kuzy nor his replacement in a potential trade takes this team to the promise land. And in that case you look way more clownish trading him for somebody who has no business to be the main piece going back for him than just holding onto him and playing it out whatever the outcome might be in the end.

We need to move one of: Schultz or Dillon

And, one of: Hagelin or Kempny

Or, Kuznetsov.

Definitely a tough position to be in.

Not really. More info is required but if the Ovechkin that exploded at Samsonov in full few of the cameras is what results from Kuzy's behavior and that result is common thru the locker room, what comes may well resemble what happens when a coach loses the room.

We know next to nothing. We know Kuzy missed a team function and got a disciplinary scratch. He then got COVID and missed playoff games. We saw Ovechkin's uncharacteristic behavior. We heard MacLellan say Kuzy needed to be the best player he can be or decisions would be made. He said Kuzy hurt the team. Maybe Oshie and Ov and Backstrom and Wilson dont really give a shit if Kuzy is trying or not. Maybe after taking pain killing shots and playing with pain it really pisses them off. Who knows? I dont. I certainly can understand after 3 years of trying to get him back on the program with no success and watching their careers ticking away, that they have had enough.

If that were the case, do you think keeping him works at all?

Thats possibly the choice you are facing.
