I think the flat cap is still definitely in place for next year as well, and if Gary Bettman is to be believed, for several more years. So its not going to go up.

And next year, the Caps have pretty much 0 free agents except for I think Schultz and Kempny. So the team is pretty much locked into place barring trades. Would be just as hard to shake things up as it is this year without something big happening.

Edit: also Dowd and Sprong

2022 Caps FAs

Dowd
Sprong (RFA)
Schultz
Kempny
Schultz and Kempny is 6.5 more mil that they can use. Assuming they are even still here

5m of that could go to Ovy

Nah, never was going to get traded. One article with no solid proof led to a ton of speculation and spun out or control because everybody on these forums is a great upstanding citizen who has the right to scrutinize somebody else who made a couple mistakes. He's elite talent, they don't grow on trees.

Well, thats not true. MacLellan said Kuznestov was "hurting the team.". “We need him to play at his highest ability,” MacLellan said. “And if he can’t play at his highest ability, we’re not going to be a good team, and we’d have to make some other decisions.”

Thats pretty straight forward

I would totally go for your scenario Ridley. I just don't know if we should risk signing Ovechkin to a 1-3 year contract or if he would be even willing to do that. Or he might just laugh at our faces lol

Fair.

Semin was an elite talent as well and they jettisoned him…Also, if you do keep Kuzy, this is pretty much the exact same team after you just got your ass handed to you for the third year in a row in round 1. Seems kinda crazy to not make any substantive changes but what do I know.

Why did they lose last playoffs? Werent their top 2 goalies, who were already inexperienced players, lost to injury and COVID? Was the goalie of record in the 1st 2 games a guy that played 1 game in the season? Was it not generally known that 5 of the top 6 forwards plus Eller and their 2 top scoring defensemen damaged by injury?

Why did they lose the season before? Was it the team or the terrible coaching?
Why did the lose the season after the cup?

This is a team that lead or tied for the division in all 3 of those seasons. Does how and why they lost count or is it just that they lost? If its just the losing, why no changes to the core and coaching after two President's trophy flameouts and how did they win the cup AFTER that failure?

IMO, Matt Niskanen answers the first loss. Lack of interest and Reirden the 2nd loss. Injuries resulted in the 3rd. A fairly healthy Caps wins that first round series. Some NHL level goaltending might have been enough. Do you really break up a group of studs because an immature young goalie scored a double OT losing goal on himself and another kid goalie in his first playoff game pulled a muscle?

There isnt a chance in the world that Ovechkin signs a short term contract. He negotiated his own deal. He isnt going to want to keep repeating that process. His contract will be 5 years. 4 at the least

Every team has injuries. The Islanders made it to the Conference Finals without their captain. Lightning won the Cup two years ago without theirs.

This team isn’t a contender anymore. Not playing the Devils and Sabres 8 times will be eye opening.

IMO, a retool is absolutely necessary, but our hands are largely tied. Trading Kuzy is our only real option at changing things up.

Yes. Every team has injuries. Your entire pp1? Teams lose in the playoffs all the time because of injuries. The only reason to change the team core because of this last loss is because you are convinced that Ovechkin, Backstrom, Oshie, Wilson, Eller, Carlson are to risky to keep because of injuries. I have seen next to no one suggest that. Just that they are losers. They were losers even worse before they won.

Let’s not exaggerate claims. Never have I used the word losers. I stated the fact that the last three years they flamed out in the first round and specifically in the last two years, had their proverbial ass handed to them.

This isn’t a personal attack on any players. I love the core we have but it seems like we have an excuse for all three years to point too. A lot of successful teams have excuses they could point too bad they lost but they found a way. Losing in the first round three years in a row with this caliber of players should be unacceptable to management. I’m not getting that feeling from them. This feels more like a shoulder shrug reaction. I don’t want management to revert back to GMGM style of asset management when he refused to read the tea leaves and let his dedication to a player blind the truth. Is that happening right now? Probably not but I feel like there needs to be a line drawn by management.

This could all be for naught and in a month things look quite different so who knows. Let’s wait to see how it plays out. I’m just sharing my perspective, right or wrong is to be determined.

Not to mention, we just don’t have the money to keep all these guys. Several players need to go, just so we can sign the captain and two goaltenders.

I've had this fantasy for awhile... It's highly likely that I'm putting lipstick on a pig, but WTF, don't really care, it's fun to throw shit out.

Anyone who's followed this team for years knows that they're notoriously tight-lipped with information, really going back even before McPhee.

So all the "We're done with Kuzy" talk is... rare, for this franchise. And what exactly is a goal of doing that? I mean, airing dirty laundry about a player you want to trade just lowers that player's trade value. (Which was already tough to pull off with a flat cap and him underperforming, numbers wise.)

I've been positive that as soon as he gets traded, he absolutely lights the world on fire next season. I just think he's the kind of kid to go 'oh crap' and take things seriously again.

But what if it's intentional? What if they're entire purpose of leaking the "trade him" stuff was to light that fire for them? Make him feel 'lucky' to still be on the team next year?

Bah. Oh well, whatever, nevermind.

For all those crying endlessly about how shitty/stupid/poorly managed/etc the Caps are, I give you... the Edmonton Oilers.

They also just signed a 39-year old goaltender to a multi-year deal. Incredible that such elite talent (and some other very good players) are trapped on that team.

Well that is crazy shit by them. I have questions about management right now but I certainly don’t think they suck. I trust BMac, I just have questions.

I have some growing reservations about how GMBM is managing the cap and assets lately, but all of my criticism of him is in comparison to the standards he himself has set, and the decisions he’s made previously. He’s been, on the whole, a very good GM and has shown a great aptitude to the team’s needs and ability to fill them repeatedly.

Imagine having the best player in the world (McDavid) and know that every year your team is going to be ass. That would be a downer.

Worse than that: by having the best player in the world you’re never going to fully be ass, limiting the amount of talent you can bring in through the draft. But because they’re pseudo-ass, no high profile FAs ever want to sign with you. They’re trapped in a cycle of suckiness.
