So, Laviolette's contract says that he chooses his assistant coaches except he has to keep Forsythe and put him in charge of the power play. Gotcha

If you look under a microscope you would realize Dick Patrick has been with the Caps since '82. So he's been responsible for the many blunders the Caps have made over the years. I beta ya once Patrick is gone(who knows when that will be), Forsythe will be gone too. If it were the other 31 NHL teams, Forsythe would have never been hired in the first place(he was just a video coach) and he would have been easily fired by now.

I’ve met Dick Patrick once…was before the Cup, I had a lot of frustration built up over decades, and I was fully prepared to think he would be an idiot, or come across as dated in his thinking, but he wasn’t. He was articulate and really appeared to have a deep understanding of the game and the team’s shortcomings at the time. Personable in a grandfatherly way. I left thinking he’s the type of guy you want sitting at table at least. I doubt he has anything to do with a Forsythe-type personnel decision.

Dick Patrick is 75 years old. I am not sure how much micromanaging he is doing. I do remember Leonsis talking about the meeting where they decided on Bruce Cassidy. He said Patrick and McPhee brought their choices who were different from each other and from him. He(Leonsis) had Cassidy and that is who they hired. In that case at least, the mistake was on Leonsis. At this point I think its fair to say that Leonsis who is a forward thinker saw something special in Cassidy that has born out given time to mature.

I dont know Patrick and I've never spoken to him. I know people that know him. He sounds to me like he is a good sounding board. An advisor. That said, he came to the Caps 1982 and if he had anything to do with hiring David Poile, who was 32 years old at the time, and/or trading for Rod Langway and/or the save the Caps campaign we all owe him a lot.

Dick Patrick is Vice Chairman and Capitals President. He overseas everything the Caps do. Chris Wagner runs the Caps Hockey Operations(I had no idea who he was until I found out through a Google search). Patrick overseas everything. Frankly, from his start in '82 till now, some things still stink in this organization besides the fact we have Ovechkin and a Stanley Cup won. To me something smells fishy about the fact that Forsythe has lasted through so many coaching changes. Someone of importance or higher up in management has made sure Forsythe sticks around. It's pretty easy with the eye test that Forsythe is mostly a fraud. The talent has been good for so long that the PP execution is simple minded. Now that the PP high end talent has mostly aged and opponent PK's are overall better, hard work/execution/coaching comes more into play. Bottom line, Forsythe's coaching ability keeps getting exposed more and more every coming season.

I'm a bit confused with what you just said. Who chose Cassidy, McPhee or Patrick? I have always thought it was McPhee who chose Cassidy, but maybe McPhee was just keeping with Leonsis/Patrick's orders?

I bet ya it was Patrick who was behind the decisions to choose Oates and Hunter. I think it was his influence that Trotz was hired(Trotz of course coached the Baltimore Skipjacks(Caps AHL farm team at one time). Stupidly they pushed out/kicked their Stanley Cup winning coach and the coach who had the most success with the organization.

Leonsis chose Cassidy. Leonsis said that McPhee brought Hanlon and Patrick brought a 3rd candidate that I cant remember

I don't get why we're so obsessed with the PP when ES scoring in the playoffs has been the problem for years.

Caps were 3rd last year in regular season PP% but sucked all around in the playoffs. Since the Cup they're 9th overall out of 25 teams in PP% during the playoffs at 19.2%, down from 21.3% in the regular season over that period. So it's not terrible and probably not enough to get BF fired.

Compare that to ES goals. Caps are 3rd in the league in regular season 5v5 goals since the Cup, but in total GF/GP in the playoffs across those 3 seasons they drop to 22nd in the league (2.15) out of 25 teams.

Guys who disappear at ES in the playoffs are the problem, not the PP.

To be fair, the article mentioned that Forsythe wasn't getting fired and that started the subject up. Forsythe has been a Caps coach for 15 years this season. As he started as an early video coach, it strikes me that his touch and use of video may be elite which would explain 5 head coaches wanting to keep him. Lets face it, his tenure is pretty unusual.

What’s fishy? He’s from a family deeply rooted in the game and is a part owner.

Dick Patrick ain’t making the call to keep the PP guy or not….and he’s leaving this organization when he (Patrick)goes to his grave someday….not before.

Patrick is keeping Ov's piece of the team warm for when he can take over. Meanwhile it appears Ov's phd is getting closer.

Our PP works just great when its on. Problem is level of commitment, playing with the Trotz-cliche ”urgency”. Thats hard to teach..

JC droppassing is terrible and ugly for the zone entry, everything else is in its right place in theory.

They overplay Ovie, and the set up is still there to create goals. Ovie steps down to the blueline and They have the whole right side of the zone and a strong net-presence guy. Again, in theory it works great. Just need the all-stars like Kuzy, JC and Backy playing like they want to carry the team and not just play ”alibi-hockey”.

Why would his family sell? Sports franchises are extremely lucrative.

I was under the impression that Stretch (Leonhardt) is the video coach.

Stretch is the video coach. Forsythe is "A" video coach. He started as a video coach and I have suggested that the reason that he remains on staff thru 5 different head coaches is that he does something the typical assistant coach can't do. My guess is that it has something to do with the video.

Exactly. I knew he was a video coach at one point but he is no longer the video coach. That all being said, it would be nice to have a fresh perspective on the PP and give someone who has earned a shot like Carbery a chance. Or maybe...
