Djoos was playing 20 min/night for Anaheim last year. Odd how quickly that changed.

Stolarz is a guy WSH could consider claiming. With Anderson not looking so hot, Stolarz could seriously contend for the back-up job here. If Vanecek beats him out, Stolarz goes back on waivers.

and this is why nobody should have been wetting themselves over a little pop in Djoos’ game when he was shipped out....classic tweener. Always liked him, just wish his physical tools were more impressive.
He had a steady role on a Stanley cup winning team. Pretty sure injuries are what derailed his development. Not his size

I disagree....he’s been played out of town twice now IMO.

props to him for admirably filling in on the Cup run no doubt. IMO he just never had the combination of size, strength, or skating to hold down an NHL roster spot for long. The skill is there.

I think the biggest problem with Djoos is that he has the impact and ability of a #6/7 defenseman, when there are other #6/7 defenseman on his teams that make 200k-300k less per season than he does.

He has to considerably outperform them or else his contract makes him the odd man out to stash in the minors.

Djoos bailed out Orpik more than the other way around. The Jerebek-Orpik pairing was not good.
More to the point, they complimented each other – Orpik more defensively focussed and physically capable, Djoos one of the best breakout Ds and superior skaters at that time. That's not to say it was meant to last, or that Djoos would be a full time NHLer in a different partnership or without shielding. The following season Orpik notably struggled more (and was without Djoos for the most part), and when Djoos did return he got few opportunities to reacclimatise before Jensen displaced him.

What are people's thoughts on the mixed up lines?

Having Anderson and Copley with the NHLers and Vanecek with the chancers is interesting. Hard to tell if it's because Anderson and Copley are competing for the backup job right now, or because they want to give Vanecek the net for more than one period tomorrow?

Does this mean V is in net against them? If so could be a good sign for him getting reps against the big dogs.

Anyone got any opinions on how the X's and O's look to be changing under Lavi?

Depends – in the first scrimmage the NHLers and AHLers were mixed across two balanced teams, so there wasn't a lot of difference. Vanecek/Copley were facing Ovi, Kuzy and Eller, while Samsonov had Backstrom, Vrana and Oshie to deal with. If Samsonov doesn't play tomorrow, you could see Vanecek dominating the White net and Copley and Anderson fighting for the third spot in the red? Who knows.

I'm not convinced keeping Backstrom, Ovi and Oshie together gives them the best speed or balance across the top-6. Ovi-Kuzy-Oshie and Vrana-Backstrom-Wilson might be a better balance if he wants a different look?

Going to be a long condensed season.

Feels like it'll be impressive if all the teams end up with the same number of games played - do you go with win % rather than points if a team in a covid ravaged state ends up 10 games shy at the end of the regular season?

Orpik had a knee injury bad enough that he couldnt walk up and down stairs.

ah I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s like the NFL season. Had a bumpy part but got through it and teams figured out how to keep isolated.

Don’t like the Ovie, backstrom, Oshie line. It hasn’t worked well in years. Way too slow.
