We have a new coach so I’m not sure that’s applicable anymore. I’ll admit I’m not all that familiar with how Laviolette deploys his lines. But no problems with McMichael on line 4 if he is as you say getting regular ice time, 9-10 minutes.
Just looking at 2018-19 Laviolette had well more than 12 forwards averaging more than 11 mins of even strenth ice. The team leader was in the 15 range. The Caps had 5 forwards over 14mins of estoi and Nashville 4

Not sure if this was discussed elsewhere but: Alex Ovechkin wants to end pro hockey career with KHL's Dynamo Moscow

"But my career is not over yet. I’m still in my prime. I think I will definitely play for a few more years, God grant that my health is good. I would finish in Russia at Dynamo Moscow.”

"It is clear, in two, three, four years, maybe five, I will end my career in Washington," he said. "I want to end on a beautiful note – to play my last match for Dynamo Moscow."

As someone who is rooting for him to break Gretzky's record, this doesn't seem very promising. I guess the 2 year time frame could depend on if he has a couple of down years and thinks he can't reach 894, and 5 years being if he has a few more really strong years and he's within arms reach of the record?

He can go play at 41 for them....however, the math isn’t that hard. He may decide earlier he has no chance at the record and go back. Would suck.

My take is that he is avoiding giving away details of the term of his contract. Pretty sure he signs for 5. He is being nice to Dynamo. Ov knows proper PR
Great point, if his next contract is his last contract, it's very likely he is already set on the term he wants, but can't release that to the media yet.

With Backstrom and Kuznetsov deals ending in 24/25 IMO 4 year deal and then possibly one or two 1 year deals make more sense than 5 year deal.

The only way Ov goes year to year is if he wants the flexibility. As I see him remaining a full time part of the team post playing, I am not sure that he would use the flexibility.

If you read that, and take it literally, it says "Last Match". So, after whichever he feels is the last season he chooses to have in his career (which will be in Washington), he will play one last game with Dynamo (not whole seasons). One game. Like Gordie and the Vipers.

anything COULD.....I’ll be shocked and bummed at less than 5. Imo that means he’s throwing in the towel on the record. Why wouldn’t he take the added financial security?

It could happen. I cant figure out why it would, though. I can figure out why Ovechkin would not be caught dead in the media saying that he didnt want to or didnt see how he could play for Dynamo for one season at the end. Why say that until the moment that he has to say that?

That's an interpretation. I obviously wouldn't mind if that's how he meant it, but last match just means last match. Maybe it will be a token game, maybe it won't, all we can really say is that his goal is to retire from hockey in Moscow.

I am skeptical. I think he was just saying the right things. That given everything he wants he would like to play in Moscow. A national tour season to thank his fans would be great, but do you honestly think he would walk away from a legit cup contender for that? Do you honestly think he would quit the NHL with 850 goals? Nah. That was all PR and nothing more

Absolutely not, but I don't think any of these things are mutually exclusive.

I think Ovechkin knows that once his quality of play has slipped from the NHL level he can "retire"without overstaying, like he's alluded to, and still go on to play in the KHL and be effective.

Simply because of that, I don't think he's speaking of Dynamo Moscow as a ceremonial last game type of thing. I think he wants to play there when he's done with the NHL, whenever that may be, but not when he's done with hockey. If he has 1 season to give them he'll do it, if he finds he has 4, he might do that. It won't matter either way because I don't think it will come at the cost of NHL years, but the guy is a tank and if Jaskin can light the KHL up you have to think he's got something left for them beyond a cheap game or three.

I think he is saying that if everything works out perfect, he would like to play a season in Moscow. He didnt say that thats a long shot. He is a smart guy. This is the same guy that said he would leave the NHL to play for Russia in the olympics. He stood by that right to the last minute when he had to come off it.

“hockey”.....

I’ll take the more meaningful “NHL”...

He’s not riding off early to play in the KHL
because his “NHL game” slipped.

how old was Feds again when he went back to the KHL for good?

Remember that Fedorov was broke and needed the KHL money. Otherwise he would have been back with the Caps

How is that what you got from what I wrote?

Ovechkin is on the record saying he doesn't want to overstay his effectiveness, so when that time comes at the NHL level he's going to be gone. All I'm saying is that I'd bet he gives Dynamo more than a farewell game, because he can go to the KHL at whatever age he feels like and probably still play some effective years.

not sure what you’re drawing your own conclusions about.....you’re doing exactly what I think you’re accusing me of I guess.

he can give them every game he has left at 41. If he’s “effective” for the KHL still, why not, he’s a national icon....I just suspect that doesn’t happen sooner than 5 years unless something drastic changes.

I guess this is the line that threw me. It's not early if his game has actually slipped, unless the quotes are meant to be sarcastic but that almost makes less sense.
