Here's a discussion that came up during lunch at work today that was kinda fun... Rank the franchise. How would you rank the movies in a big franchise? The big talking points in our convo ended up being...

Everyone had a different order on Mission Impossible.
Turns out lotsa people agree that Return of the Jedi kinda sucked.
Lots of arguments about which was worse: Rocky IV or Rocky V.
Everyone agreed on the order for Die Hard: 1, 3, 2, 4, 5
"Best Trilogy Ever" got heated between Tolkien movies and the first 3 Bournes.
No one can tell Fast/Furious movies apart without Google.
No one in a group of tech people has much fondness for the original/nextgen Trek films.
There are too many MCU movies to rank after a couple beers.
And before you ask, we're at the end of a contract and had a birthday to celebrate today, so we were knocking off after lunch. ;)

Anyway, lotsa of Star Wars talk here, so how would you rank those movies (or which ever franchise you want)? My list...

A New Hope (IV)
The Empire Strikes Back (V)
The Force Awakens (VII)
Rogue One
Solo
Return of the Jedi (VI)
The Last Jedi (VIII)
The Rise of Skywalker (IX)
Revenge of the Sith (III)
Attack of the Clones (II)
The Phantom Menace (I)

Thanks for the recommendation, Hive. I'll check out The Mandalorian.

Ranking the Star Wars movies? Gets difficult after the OT, because, well...you know...

1. ESB
2. ROTJ
3. ANH
4. TFA
5. Solo
6. Rogue One
7. Revenge of the Sith
8. The Last Jedi

Ok now we're into dregs:

9. The Phantom Menace
10. Attack of the Clones
11. Rise of Skywalker

I rank Rise of Skywalker dead last because it actually had a chance to be good had they followed the
Collin Trevorrow script but Kathleen and JJ went and mucked it all up and in my eyes essentially killed
the franchise.

Speaking of Marvel, you wouldn't think a MODOK series done by the people from Robot Chicken with Patton Oswalt as MODOK would be sorta shit, but here we are.

Only made it through 2 episodes. Abandon ship.

Too much other good new stuff to get into.

Stranger Things S4 should be out today.

Watched the first two eps of Kenobi series. Pretty decent so far. The casting of that tiny little girl playing Leia, who is supposedly 10, couldn't past my generally easy believability benchmark. Also even Luke in his self imposed isolation worked on his jedi skillset the fact that kenobi did/does not just feels kinda dumb unless there is some detection mechanic that is not mentioned. Cause it really seems the more powerful one is in the force the easier it is to hide in plain sight.

Finished S3 of Stranger Things I liked the back half of the season and the separate story lines. Watched the first eps of S4. Have to mentioned the D&D scene was classic. Having gone to HS between 84-88 and played D&D it was spot on.

I made it through…it gets a little better. Certainly on the low end for Marvel content.

That’s the kind of stuff I consider great multi-tasking fodder…

I just rewatched the Stranger Things season 3 finale again to refresh my memory. I forgot how damn good it was…

Anyone who thinks Rocky IV was worse than Rocky V should no longer be able to give opinions on movies. Rocky IV was awesome.

And no love for Back to the Future for trilogies?

I’m finishing a rewatch of Stranger Things now. Almost through S2. Forgot how awesome this show is and can’t wait to watch S4.

For Letterkenny fans, Shoresy’s spin-off has started. For those who haven’t watched Letterkenny, get on it.

I totally agree that Rocky V is the worst of the bunch, hands down. Having said that, IV was the first time the formula wore thin, without the montages I'm not sure it's even 80 minutes long, and the jingoism was laid on pretty thick. So it set itself a pretty low bar, but it cleared it with ease. It's a fun enough watch, and it's made a bit better by the continuation in the Creed movies (which I also like). So for me Rocky is like...

1..3..6.......2.........................................4................................................................................................5

And the Creed movies plug right in after 6.

And no love for Back to the Future for trilogies?

Well, first of all, it's not like my work friends are the pinnacle of movie knowledge or taste. ;) Secondly, Back to the Future did come up, but there was a consensus that there's a dropoff after the first movie and that the Tolkien and Bourne trilogies get a little bump from pretty cleanly telling one big story. I dug that about the Bourne movies, though they tarnished it by making the pretty shitty fourth one (the Renner flick is its own thing, IMO).

I also tend to be less of a sci-fi/fantasy fan, so I'm biased. Those 3 Bourne movies are crazy good, both on their own and as a complete story. I could definitely watch Back to the Future again. I think I only saw the last 2 in theaters, so it's been a loooooonng time...

Everyone had their little hills to die on in the discussion. I got a lot of shit for saying that I only liked maybe 2 of the Fast/Furious movies, and for not knowing all the names of the Star Wars chapters. And I was pretty surprised that there was a lot of hate for Mission Impossible III. I liked that one, but everyone else lumped it in among the worst (II, not many liked the first). It was a fun conversation.

Finished Stranger Thins S4 this morning. Looks like Part two drop July 1st. Have to say the individual episode lengths were very long all seemed like at least an hour and the last episode of Part 1 was even movie length. I'm looking at you disney with your 30 minute episodes. Anyways well done very creepy and gross. Basically think that so far this first part of the season delivers.

One more episode to go for this batch. Pretty awesome overall.

Maybe it's just been too long since I watched S1-3 but this seems like the best of the bunch, excepting maybe S1 because it was the original. Picked up on a shit ton of references or homages to classic movies from the 70s and 80s. Not sure if younger fans will notice and enjoy this as much as someone who grew up basically the same age as these kids, in that culture.

Just the cultural references are spot on accurate. I went to HS 84-88 so the characters are in my wheel house in time. Also kinda hilarious I have the same type of leather jacket/jean jacket vest combo that Eddie has except for a Dio back pactch I have a Celtic Frost one. I'll have to throw up a pic of it.

One thing I hope people realize is that when they are calling people nerd it is much more of a severe tag back then compared to nerd now which is basically mainstream. Not sure why it worked out the people that I gamed with back then were know where near the official nerd category and were basically regular peeps.

Truth.

Missing at least from my experience is the FFA or redneck faction. Might be a regional thing. That was the only group I didn't mix with much.

Also think they may have laid it on too Mtv thick with some of the prep fashion. Many kids then just wore average looking clothes and didn't always look like extras in a Madonna video. Norms.

Also think most had wired landlines but probably not as easy to pull off in shooting the scenes.

But overall got a lot down pat.

Top Gun: Maverick….loved it….

For the more critical viewers, its predictable (but very fun), and I probably give it an extra 1/2 ⭐️ for nostalgia, but it was well worth the wait for me. I’ll definitely see it in the theater one more time.

Star Wars: Visions Volume 2 announced today.

The first one was mostly duds, but there were a few diamonds in the rough: "The 9th Jedi" and "The Elder"
were both terrific.

Could have seen a bit more members only black jackets that was a staple of my HS years. But would agree probably a bit too preppy kinda similar issue I found with WW1984. There was also a lot more plain flannel and jeans. Granted they are set in Indiana. In NoVa super suburbia definitely no redneck clique. I think for my HS it was basically: jock, band nerds, pot heads (led zepplin), drama nerds, musician dudes (guys in actual local rock/metal bands), the neutrals (those that were not in any clique).

We had all the same groups, basically.

In '86 in my area of MD the only people with flannels were the farmers who wore them normally --sometimes even buttoned up-- with boots covered in shit, or punks who wore them around the waist pre-Grunge.

Jeans were easily garment #1 for almost everyone. How you wore them was part of what separated you. I saw some acid wash in ST4 and I recall some in '86 but I think it was more popular a year or two later. I may be misremembering.

Wasn't paying attention close enough to this while viewing the episodes but cuffed jeans were big, and Docksiders with no socks were common with the preppies. The surf gear was phasing in, too.

There should also be a lot more mullets and feathered hair.

Yeah regular levis jeans was probably the most common thing. Skinny jeans seemed to creep in the very end of the 80s into the 90s. Mostly recall it coming from some thrash metal bands. Funny that it has come around since then one other time. I think im still hung up on the boot cut from the early 2000s.

By 86 there should've been more more goth/alt, and hair or thrash metal kids, too. Not a shitload but more than just one guy with a DIO jacket.

But anyway, they definitely worked in various references and plot devices from older movies at a pretty serious clip...more than before imo. Not even counting the obvious item placements or quotes....

-early and obvious Nightmare on Elm Street similarities later confirmed with cameo by Robert Englund
-some Alien/Giger influence
-definite Hellraiser imagery and concepts
-bike and soldier scenes similar to E.T.
-light sequence similar to Altered States, sensory deprivation chamber also
-Some throwbacks to Scanners
-using anger to boost power similar to Star Wars, plus Ewoks show on TV, other comments
-lovers lake reminiscent of Crystal Lake from Friday the 13th
-Carrie-like bullying with milkshake instead of blood
-Silence of the Lambs prison walk and interview but with Creel
-floating to ceiling might be an Exorcist thing
-Eddie might be named after Iron Maiden's mascot
-The grand bow and hand gesture Eddie makes at the end of their D&D campaign is a reference to something and I can't recall what it is...

All I can think of right now

Yeah was definitely missing on the thrash metal I mean Mettallica's ride the lightning was what in july 1984 and master of puppets march 86 where they simply exploded. new wave were the kids wearing all black hadn't quite morphed into the full goth from my recollection at least at my HS. Straight edge hard core also got its start in the dc scene a natural bit of regional difference between Indiana.

On the grand bow/gesture in the spoilers that is killing me to figure out.

Yeah even though early goth was around we didn't have kids in full white face or whatever. We had hints of that with just a general alternative overlap...Smiths, Bauhaus, Siouxsie, Sisters of Mercy, etc. plus Femmes, Depeche Mode, Smithereens, and so forth.

The "freak" groups were so small everyone knew each other. Few people listened to all the different styles and mixed with all the groups in those days, but I did. Mtv might have pushed the limit on that some but not much until Nirvana since Headbangers and 120 min were just tacked on to regular programming. After the internet and easy access to huge troves of music that became a lot more common.

But yeah, the bow is messing with my head. I have to figure out what that's from...
