OT: Capitals Cinema Club: TV and Movies

no, and no plans. my kids (17-8 yo) laughed at the preview. told me everything i needed to know.
Boo but still made me laugh. Though if they are not generally fans of sci-fi fans I get it. Finishing with a creative writing degree and working in high level writing workshops I was kind of amazed that most of my class mates could not really understand any story that was not grounded in their every day experience/reality.

I really planned to see it in the theater so will wait for the 4k bluray. The directors edition on the first Avatar still looks amazing even upscaled. New management position and having to work on end of year reviews for 9 people (some of with I have worked as a fellow peer for 17 years) makes it for a challenging December/January.

So hyped for Mando season 3 next month. Pedro Pascal has been killin it so far and book of boba fett or even kenobi didn't grip me nearly as much as this show has

Miracle Workers - w daniel radcliffe ... giving it a go as our "light comedy" series. Those shows you can put on at 10:30 pm and fall asleep to and not miss plot lines or something on TV while you and the lady phone surf in bed. I like it so far 4 episodes into season 1.

Has a bit of a "good place" vibe. Quirky off beat story ... not nealy as good as the Good Place

Damnit. Now I really want to see a movie at a real IMAX theater
The Udvar-Hazy Center has one, and they do show the real big ticket 70mm film IMAX releases there (although the bulk of their programming relates to the museum). For instance, Avatar is showing there currently. Airbus IMAX Theater

e; Apparently they've swapped to a 4K DLP projector now. Shame. But still at least the full size screen and sound system

Says there’s one in Virginia Beach right down the street from me at the Marine science museum, which I’ve been to many times but had no idea there was an IMAX theater there. Can’t find any information on it online, either way that sounds like an awesome experience and I’ll never think of IMAX at my local theater the same again smh

I do relish ruining move experience explaining LIEMAX to people, heh. Probably my worst real life troll trait.
I mean look….I know you’re a fellow Audiophile/Home Theater buff, but LIEMAX is still waaaaaaay better than 99% of typical movie theaters people go to.

I’ve seen a few blockbusters on the real Stadium seating IMAX and I like it less overall. Seating just blows. Small seats, upright and rigid. For sound/visual, it’s unparalleled and should be experienced at least once, but I wouldn’t want to see most things in a real IMAX theater.

ohhhh….Fauda season 4 on Netflix finally.

But why did that infected dude have to make out with her with his fungi mouth, is that in the game? that was f***ed

No, that's a change from the game.

In the game, the Fireflies and Tessa are killed by FEDRA agents. But with the focus on the second episode being on the infected and showing off the "rules" of their infection within this universe, it made sense for that climactic scene to involve the infected rather than FEDRA.

In fact, the whole thing with the mycelia sticking out from the mouths is an invention for the show. In the game, the infection was spread by spores in the air (including when they would get into wounds or bites). But the show runners obviously didn't want Pedro Pascal (and other cast members) to be wearing a gas mask for like 40% of the show the way he does in the game to avoid becoming infected, so they ditched the spores in favor of the mycelia tendrils for spreading the infection via ingestion or bites. The "kiss" was there for body horror elements. The thing with the infected being a giant fungal network is also an invention of the show

Random older movie but Strange Days opening sequence feels appropriate to what is on YT these day.

Yeah the after-episode interviews go into some detail on that and as a show-watcher who never played the games I have to agree, spores wouldn't have translated realistically without really minimizing your ability to convey dramatic impact. They simply wouldn't stay localized and realistically most of the world would be well dead by now, so stack that on the necessary precautions to actually protect yourself from them and the whole thing is not very cinematic.

Those little tendrils are absolutely great additions, too. The way they seemed nearly conscious/intuitive was frightening and the in-show explanation for the infected's far reaching sensory ability is also great and grounded well in reality with just a little tweaking. It's really excellent, makes sense, and stays pretty terrifying conceptually.

I definitely enjoy the after-episode interviews on big HBO shows, and think they can add value (and they do here). But I do feel like their explanation of the spores "not translating" was a bit of a cop-out. It felt like rationalization after the fact, when we know the reason is because they didn't want their actors in gas masks the whole time. It's okay for them to admit that. Best case scenario would be giving them gas masks like Ellie's and then CGI-ing in the faceplate:

But even then, that's additional work and still limits facial acting. Plus I think Pedro Pascal had enough of wearing a mask in The Mandalorian (I remember there being drama between season 1 and 2 of that show regarding him wanting to show his face more). And most of the gas masks in the game look like these:

For the folks who haven't played the game, you may have guessed that Ellie's comment about bloated infected who chuck exploding spores at you is indeed a reference to a type of enemy in the game. I'm guessing there probably won't be Bloaters in the show.

I agree the mycelium are creepy AF, and a good way to help set apart the infected from other Zombies.

I hope you’re wrong about the Bloaters not being included.
If they don’t include the Bloaters one of the most terrifying scenes in the game won’t be included. That part of the game where you’re in the hotel basement and the Bloater plus the other infected and Clickers come charging you after you start the generator is probably the most tense moment in the game. Could make for great TV but it would also be a tough scene to pull off.

Honestly it didn't ring that hollow to me, as soon as I heard there were spores I thought it was a good choice just because it seems to more believably limit the spread. Granted I guess at this point I could have linked the two further and said "if they had masks then they'd be fine" but since I didn't really know they were missing to begin with I wouldn't have gotten there quickly. I just think a puffy cloud of don't walk through this works better in a video game than it does for a show and the change makes for a bit of an easier time explaining why the whole world isn't mushrooms by now, especially since watching and not playing leaves you with more time to wonder.
