OT: Capitals Cinema Club: TV and Movies

I'm late to the releases but Winning Time is genuinely good TV and I don't even like the Lakers.

Dog -- my turn to pick the family movie, ended up w Dog which looked like a paint by numbers family comedy with a dog. Ended up being a deep dive into soldier PTSD .... yeah

Enemy - A24 movie w Jake Gyllenhall (sp?) ... it was decent, bit of a slow burn, typical indie lower budget probably based off a book movie ... very confusing philosophical was he one person two personalities or 2 people thing

read several reviews and director quotes .. still confused.

------------

White Noise - anyone seen yet?

Not yet. I've heard good things about Glass Onion, The Menu, and RRR, but haven't gotten around to those either. Been kinda hung up on TV lately. The Sheridan-verse has been solid, White Lotus was good.

Saw an article today that the principal cast of Stranger Things is getting like $80 million in salary alone. With all the talk about the decline of movies in the "superhero era," I think prestige television is its biggest threat. What Amazon just paid for that LotR series is bonkers for something intended for viewing in a living room.

Watched it, couldn't really find anything to latch on to for a looooong time, was almost frustrating. Then for a little bit it seemed like if they made one of the National Lampoon Vacation movies about a borderline apocalyptic event and I guess that was kind of entertaining, or at least threatened to be, then it got super dark and weird and I was frustrated again.

Then it suddenly got really funny for like 10-15 minutes near the end but the end itself kind of crapped out and lost me again.

I've only seen half of RRR and I still consider it one of the best things I've done with media in the last year. I only know about the Bollywood/Tollywood genre from memes and hype and a handful of react videos by CGI artists I like but RRR f***ing crushes it from a "watchability" standpoint while still hitting those over the top hallmarks, it's a f***ing riot. If you can watch something "seriously" while also getting a good chuckle at it you're going to be in for a treat, and the best moments are genuinely good. The dance sequence is genuinely my favorite part of what I saw so far and I almost can't believe that because there are some great set pieces there, that dance is just ridiculously good. I just have to go back to watch what is essentially a second movie now to wrap it up.

This reminds me of when I got control of the family movie pick for a holiday event and picked Mother! because I had seen it and knew nobody else I ever met in my life was going to watch it, so the only chance I had at commiseration was to present it as an earnest movie pick and just let it unfold.

I kind of won and lost that one, because I'll have a hard time earning movie trust for a while but they had to admit the ride was unreal. The weird part was I picked it because I was intrigued but ultimately hated it the first time around, but the second time... watching other people watch it suddenly made the whole thing incredible.

Family movie night on Fridays is a big deal in my house. We rotate who gets to pick. My kid LOVES picking musicals just to mess with me. I try to find something a bit off beat but coming of age like Stand By Me. I know all about the "earning of trust" and negotiations and back stabbings that go on.

RRR - i had to turn it off after an hour and half or so. but i agree with your opinion on it, some over the top kick ass scenes, I forgot why we turned it off ... not in the right mood for an epic big screen movie?

Can’t remember the last time I was this excited for a show. It’s entirely possible the answer is never.

Also, just started watching The Northman last night. I’m only 10 minutes in but I’m looking forward to it.

The Northman was odd and good. Then the 1st episode ended. I was sad when I realized it was actually a film.

Watched some…..wow….some over the top fun action, but then the oppressive British theme kinda takes the shine off it…..at least so far (I hope that goes somewhere not cliche). I quit after about 40 mins…..not hooking me, but I hope to pick it up again.

I was sick last week, stayed home and got to tv surf ... found this show Letterkenny

Its about hicks, skids and hockey players

Has a Clerks dialogue vibe to it, lots of descriptive terms and nicknames

Couldn’t get into Letterkenny….

I“ve been burning through The Last Ship…..surprisingly better than I expected.

Viking’s Valhalla season 2 tomorrow.

Got into the second season for Letterkenny will eventually get back to it.
