OT: Capitals Cinema Club: TV and Movies

I started it and the first episode is pretty gripping but I really wasn't a fan (in the moment) of going back in time for episode 2, got bored and ended up turning it off. Should I go back, is it worth it?
I liked it a lot but I’m kind of a nut for understanding why people do what they do. Human behavior is pretty fascinating to me and part of my career.

I also liked how it wasn’t overly gory or gruesome and focused a lot on the human element in terms of what happened leading up to these events, how did it continue to happen, and what happened to everyone after. It doesn’t just focus on Dahmer either; it focuses on his family, the victim’s families, the neighbor who lived next door to him, etc, and all of their story arcs. I found it pretty compelling.

That makes it a little easier for me to go try again. I was really into the tense in-the-moment thriller stuff the first episode provided and thought the whole thing was going to be a little more Silence of the Lambs I guess, but if I can get my brain to know it's more of a character study it still seems good enough to go back to

Watched the first episode of The Old Man last night….that was damn good.
It's fantastic.

Can't do it. I would never sleep again.

I’m enjoying HOTD over Rings of power, rings of power is losing me a bit
Loving them both. Rings of Power is blowing me away, given the morass that is the source material. They're pulling a cohesive narrative together out of the Silmarillion and other posthumous works... but that's definitely requiring a lot story setting, which does occasionally blunt the action. Think it's about to get moving though.

Agreed on this. Actually played a ton in the LotR world via MERP/Rolemaster RPG systems back in the day which took some creative license and expanded things and added some storylines. The last RoP episode was a little treading water a bit but that is the downside of one episode week versus full seasons stream on demand.

It is nice that they are very different fantasy one high one low in style.

That RoP series deserves a 4k bluray release though and it probably will not get one. At least HBO has done that with GoT and Westworld.

Rings of Power wants to be a slow-burn show, and I love me a good slow-burn show. But in order to be a good slow-burn show, you need to make the viewer invested in the characters and invested in the stakes of the conflict. Rings of Power is failing to do that. Galadriel is entirely unlikable (which is a travesty), Numemnor is a hot mess, the Southlands plot lines didn't want to reveal their stakes, and they're even making the Harfoots into jerks. Elrond and the Dwarves are the one aspect that is absolutely carrying the show (Disa is easily my favorite), but even that is at risk of whichever direction they take this new Mithril plot.

Unfortunately, they aren't pulling much of anything from the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, or any other posthumous works. They don't have the rights to them. They only have the rights to the Appendices for the LOTR series. Much of what they've put into Rings of Power has been in direct conflict with the Silmarillion, Beren & Luthien, and Unfinished Tales. I've posted at length about some of the differences on the thread in the Entertainment board, so I won't repost them here.

Meanwhile I swore up and down Game of Thrones would never burn me again and was suuuuper not interested in the new show, but happened to have HBO Max for other reasons and time on my hands.

Six weeks later I'm like hoooooo boy, what's going on with dem dragons?

It's probably not as good as the early Game of Thrones seasons were but it scratches the itch.

I know the world is sick of Star Wars shows, but Andor is phenomenal. I think it could be the best show on TV right now, and that's including HotD. It's the polar-opposite of something like BoBF or Obi Wan.

That being said, we're only 5 episodes into a 14 episode season, and the show is definitely taking it's time. If you're not into slow-burns or you can't handle waiting a week between purposefully-paced episodes, you may want to wait for it to fully be out and then binge it.

honestly disney can f*** right out of here on a series about a third tier character from a third tier movie. Rogue One sucked in, like, immeasurable ways and this is them doubling down so hard on the worst of it to me

Couldn't disagree more. This series is "about" Andor in that its giving us Andor as our anchor into the universe, but it's so much more than that. This isn't Obi-Wan where it's just adventures centered around a familiar character interacting with other familiar characters. This isn't just another excuse for fan service fight scenes and a bunch of cameos. And this definitely isn't told from 90% the perspective of a single character, like Obi-Wan, Mandalorian, and Book of Boba Fett were. The series follows Andor, but it jumps around to a bunch of other characters as well. It's giving us some really nice vignettes into the Star Wars universe.

More importantly, it's a perspective of the actual "Wars" part of Star Wars. This isn't Skywalkers, Jedi, and Sith and force mysticism. This is a grounded series, showing the workings of the Imperial machinery first hand, and those who strove to resist it. It shows us the arrogance and ambition of Imperial officers. It shows us relatable characters simply trying to exist within Imperial systems of governance, and how that opens up avenues for the Rebellion to begin to form. It shows us the differing attitudes of Rebels, and the tension between them. It shows us the paranoia and anxiety of trying to covertly overthrow a Empire, while avoiding their intelligence/secret police. This is a slow-burn drama and spy-thriller set in the universe of Star Wars.

(And it keeps the Easter Eggs tastefully in the background, rather than shoving them in our face)

I also quite liked Rogue One. Not only is it the best Disney-era Star Wars movie, it's better than the prequels by a country mile.

I grew tired of the Star Wars world and haven't kept up with the Disney shows. I haven't seen Obi Wan or the Boba Show. Do I need to watch those before watching Andor? I guess from a timeline perspective Andor happens way before those two shows?

No need to watch those shows in order to enjoy Andor. My buddy commented to me that "So far Andor has shown a lot of planets and none of them are Tatooine" Andor takes place in its own space and time (no pun intended).

It's really well done and not like all the other Disney SW shows. Its not gratuitous fan service and campy humor (both of which I like but enjoy the break from it too)

BTW if you haven't watched Mandalorian, you need to start there. Its very well done, by Favreau and Filoni, who completely get it.

Thanks!

I'm all caught up on the Mandalorian.

As @kicksavedave said, Andor is pretty much a standalone. So long as you've seen the original trilogy, you can hop right in.

Don't rush to see Obi-Wan. It's not as bad as the haters say, but it's also definitely not must-see-TV. Save it for when you have an itch for Star Wars.

You will need to watch Book of Boba Fett before you watch Mandalorian season 3 when that comes out (Feb 2023). The second half of BoBF is basically Mando season 2.5

Being a hard core scifi reader probably the most bullish on the star wars IP. I've read so many scifi books/series that are superior in the various scifi genre categories that it is tough to be un biased.

Andor first episode is decent but again, imho, its fighting against a current that is an inherent in the IP. Still flying around ships in space like they are aero planes (amongst other things).
