Buffalo never takes that deal. Tanev is great, but it's too hard to find a top 6 center in the league. Vancouver just found that out when Columbus to PLD at 3, ahead of draft projections.

They already have two top 6 centers in O'Reilly and Eichel. What they don't have is a defensive rock like Tanev. And the cost for one of those, well, Edmonton just found out this summer

Right now, Buffalo would get the best player in the deal. Reinhart may eventually become a true number one center but that's never a certainty and Vancouver takes all the risk by taking on a **** like Kane who has been playing like a 4th liner

The Sabres aren't moving Reinhart.

Plus, they have depth issues on the wing. They aren't moving two wingers in a deal that gets them one winger back.

And yet they need to get replacements for all those players. Kane's replacement will be 4+ in top 6. Moulson was top 6 and will be 4+ to replace. etc etc etc. Just because a player comes off the books doesn't man you get ALL of that cap space back. Buffalo may have some ELC's ready to come in for some of them, but not all of them if they want to be competitive.

AsI recall Pens don't have Staal anymore because they could no longer afford him with Crosbies and Malkins raises. Same will happen in Buff, Eichel is key to the future, and they will have to choose between O-Reilly(who has an NTC i think) or Reinhart.

The Sabres aren't doing 1-for-1 replacement of position and salary. Here's tonight's lines at Ottawa.

Carrier - O'Reilly - Okposo
Kane - Eichel - Reinhart
Foligno - Larsson - Gionta
Moulson - Grant - Girgensons

The replacements for Kane, Gionta, and Moulson are already in Buffalo: Alex Nylander, Hudson Fasching, and Nick Baptiste. And Grant will eventually get replaced by Tyler Ennis, when healthy. Reconstructed:

Carrier - O'Reilly - Okposo
Nylander - Eichel - Girgensons
Fasching - Reinhart - Ennis
Foligno - Larsson - Baptiste

Or add in Virtanen is a Kane for Virtanen trade happens. Regardless, the replacement players won't add up to $14.5M to replace Kane, Moulson, and Gionta.

Buffalo isn't so desperate for defensemen that they'd trade Reinhart. Ristolainen, McCabe, and Kulikov are top 4 defenders, with Ristolainen as the future 1D. Bogosian fits if healthy. Buffalo doesn't have the glaring need that they can't fill in free agency or the draft. They'll make a run at Alzner or Shattenkirk before trading Reinhart.

Also, a defensive D isn't what the Sabres really need. They need someone like Cam Fowler, who moves the puck and can QB the PP.
