huh, contract structure is very interesting. I just hope league circumstances don't change so much that a low-salary high-cap hit player becomes unattractive down the road

also the fact Aquaman thinks it's no big deal to fork over an extra $20M up front just to play the cap game shows how ****ed up housing still is in Vancouver

What "advantage" does it give us for the cap other than we cannot gain anything by buying him out after 4 years?

I think it would be a very bad sign if they re-signed in 2 years.

Plus, the centre ice position would have Horvat and Sutter slotted into the 2/3 slot. Henrik won't be a#1 guy after this deal ends.

The offence would be in huge trouble if the centre ice spot remains the same after the next 2 years.

Man, Loui's agent did his job. $28 million in signing bonus money per cap friendly. Only $8 million in annual salary. If his play drops like Burrows/Higgins, he would have pocketed well over $30 million for his time, be it 4 or 5 years even after a buyout.

Even if Eriksson's play drops...his ''drop'' is likely better than anything Burrows or Higgins offered at their peaks.

This GM takes his marching orders from the president and ownership. It's the offseason, not the deadline. The GM should be looking at both being competitive now and the future. At the deadline, your 'now' is out of the playoffs so you only look to the future.

If you were hired as GM, and the President and Ownership tells you that if you miss the playoffs too many times, you are getting canned, so what would you do? Tank anyway and hope you keep your job? If you don't keep your job, at least you leave a nice basket of prospects for your successor? If I was the GM, I'd sure look at shoring up that offense and trying to get some production from the D. I'd also be shoring up the farm team to help with player development.
Well sure, if your owner is a short-sighted idiot, everything goes out the window. But the role of the GM ideally should be to devise the best possible way to work towards a cup, whether that's going to be short term or long term.

I know you've always hated Burrows but that is quite absurd. Eriksson will not lose a step and be a 35 goal player with an excellent defensive game.

I haven't always hated Burrows...

I really like Eriksson as a player, he's in a differen't universe compared to your Higgins' and Burrow's of the world, but this will probably bite us in the ass by year 4 at the latest.

We're a better team than we were yesterday, but once again the Flames have outdone us on a similar signing in Brouwer. It'd be much easier to stomach his lower AAV and shorter contract. He's not better than Eriksson, but he provides a similar type of play. Just like when Hiller signed with the Flames and we got Ryan Miller.

Calgary is going to be great. We are trending backwards.

I think a lot of people are going to be surprised just how good Eriksson is. He's a better players than the sum of his production.

It's shocking that a guy with three 70+ point seasons and two 60+ point seasons can be so mysterious and leaving people unsure if he's good or not...

It's cringe worthy because he is the best winger we've ever gotten the Sedins IMO.

I would have also liked boedker but sounded like he wanted a cup.

1 for 1 eriksson is probably a bit better player, but when you factor in hes 4 years older, and needed a bigger contract, would have liked boedker more.

Eriksson will be good, its just for how long?

Both Calgary and Edmonton should be great going forward, they've been rebuilding long enough. It's not a lateral competition with them.

Meh, could have been worse. Everyone and their mother knew going into this off-season that Benning was going to be gunning hard to sign atleast one big name UFA (possibly two). I heard alot about Lucic and Brouwer... hell, even the Mayor 'miraculously' was at the same spot the Canuck brass took Lucic out for lunch. Wow, imagine the odds?! I would've loved me some Lucic crashing in on that forecheck, but I think in the long run we are better off staying away from all the drama that Milan would've produced here being a hometown guy.

As for the Eriksson signing, if you consider the fact that Vrbata was making only slightly less and was as tough as 2-ply toilet paper in the playoffs against Calgary and basically mailed it in last year, it isn't the end of the world. I'll say that I'm in the camp of stockpiling draft picks and doing a proper rebuild, but we ALL KNOW Benning was brought in to "rebuild on the fly", aka 'keep making money' while getting younger.

Loui Eriksson's contract will play out better than Andrew Ladd's, or even Milan Lucic's. I understand Chiarelli picking up a personal bodyguard for McDavid, and I think Milan will thrive for 2 years. After that, we'll see.

As for Loui, I predict a 25-40-65 year out of him if the Sedins stay healthy. He'll play a solid two way game, and scores alot of goals in the dirty area infront the net.

As for Benning....keep some of those second round picks bud. After all, Eriksson was taken in the second round.

People think nhl players are overpaid. Mike Conley of the Memphis grzlizzlies got offered a 5 year 153 million dollar contract and he's never made an all star game in his life.

lol I am a very casual Basketball fan and have never even heard of Mike Conley. That's hilarious.

If the NHL was getting TV contracts the size that the NBA gets from Espn (Disney) & TNT (Time Warner)

They'd get comparable salaries (relative to roster size)

Yeah but its Mike Conley, there are two players in NBA history to have gotten over 30m per year. Jordan and Kobe.

This is like the equivalent of Lucic getting 14million x 5.

With the new TV deal everyone in the NBA will be getting 30-40% more. So it's like Lucic got 10 million but the cap went up to over 100 million.

Glad it's not Lucic. I don't think Lucic's style of play will help teach or inspire the younger players. Was thinking it might just be better to go with what they got and finish near the bottom to try to grab another high draft pick next year but if the younger guys are fighting a losing battle all year long it might have an adverse affect on their development. Getting a few more wins along the way while watching and participating in some intelligent playmaking won't be so depressing and could bring out more of the younger guys' potential.

No it would be as if the cap hit was still 73mil and Lucic being the highest paid player in the league.

Bottom line is a non all star got this kind of money. IN the NBA making the all star game is actually a big deal too.
