Would have preferred Boedker.... But at least its not Ladd?

Seriously strange signing with where the team is.... and a NMC? Don't get it.
Any chance that the Sedins re-sign for less after their current contract? If they can still play at that point, they might not want to retire. We could sign them to lesser contracts. They turn 36 before the start of the upcoming season. If they want to play past 38, they can re-sign at a very low price.

Most would.
But Backes brings an identity and swagger to the team on and off the ice. Eriksson isn't a game changing talent, he's just solid. He's not going to be a guy that carries the offense when times are down, he rolls with the flow and tends to disappear in intensity. I'm happy either way, good luck with Loui. He'll put up his points.

Yes that identity and swagger sure has helped the Blues. Rather than identity and swagger how about more wins than losses.

they would if they felt they could win a cup imo, their kids will still be young enough around 40 to go to sweden and experience life there.

Can't say I really hate this signing, going off on a tangent I just wish we kept our prospects like Mccann/Shink.

There are many 31 year old players in the league who are signed by 5-7 more years. Anaheim's 3 main players (Getzlaf, Perry and Kesler) are all 31 and signed for many more years.

The Sedins will be 36 next year and will probably put up close to 1 PPG again. So why people keep talking about age, I have no idea. It seems like "30" is the magical number where people start talking about age. I remember people back in 2012 saying the Sedins were old and finished. Too funny.

Eriksson has a lot of gas left in the tank. I bet at 31 years old he is in better shape and has more gas left than Milan Lucic does at 28 years old, just based on the style of game played. I would much rather have Eriksson than Lucic.

It sure helped the Bruins in 2011.

No an entire inured blueline and an injured first line center on the opposition helped the Bruins. People don't want to here that but it's the truth. The swagger the Bruins had doesn't mean anything if the Canucks were at all healthy compared to the Bruins.

There is a common identity to all successful teams. They have good players. Period. That's it. There is no secret sauce of needing intimidating players etc etc etc. And besides we are talking Backes who is one of the least intimidating playoff players. He runs around a bit and flexes some muscles but his playoff performance in his career has been underwhelming and everyone knows it. No opposition is scared of Backes.

And while I'm at it...big scary bruising D-men also don't intimidate NHL players you find on good teams.

Yeah the only noticeable thing Lucic did that ENTIRE series as to take a hit from Hamhuis (that knocked the later out of the series).

I would have also liked boedker but sounded like he wanted a cup.

1 for 1 eriksson is probably a bit better player, but when you factor in hes 4 years older, and needed a bigger contract, would have liked boedker more.

Eriksson will be good, its just for how long?

Should have traded for Eriksson 10 years ago. Best fit for the twins in their career. Opens for more twin years later on!

I'm a huge Lou fan.

He was an elite 2way winger for the Bruins this year, elite defensively/on the pk, great on the powerplay and best in front of the net player for the team.
It's difficult to describe how much he helped the brutal defense, he gives easy passing lanes for D-players, and always skates back, while rarely makes a mistake.

You have to watch him closely so you can appreciate what he does to the team, he's quiet but impressive.

But at the same time I understand some of the comments, where the team is at and that 6th year.
Lou goes with his IQ and he should age well, I'm sure he'll be a great mentor for the kids.

Edit: I just want to point out that because of the salary structure/signing bonuses, the contract is basically buyout-proof.

Just an example, buying out the final two years...

And if they try to buy out just the final year, they save only $2M but take a $1M penalty the year after.

From my understanding.
This structure makes him tradable if we want to trade him to small budgets team when he's in his final 2 years

Well the Sedins have no excuses about linemates anymore. This will really prove whether they can still produce at a high end 1st line level... If they can't put up 65-70 points at least, why even try to compete? We're not going anywhere unless the Sedins are near PPG players.

Difference is Ducks are a good team, Canucks aren't. Eriksson has concussion history as well, they should've left in a buyout period in the contract

Sedins never used line mates as an excuse

huh, contract structure is very interesting. I just hope league circumstances don't change so much that a low-salary high-cap hit player becomes unattractive down the road

also the fact Aquaman thinks it's no big deal to fork over an extra $20M up front just to play the cap game shows how ****ed up housing still is in Vancouver

New immigrants are the main reason, well my family was one too

I think it would be a very bad sign if they re-signed in 2 years.

Plus, the centre ice position would have Horvat and Sutter slotted into the 2/3 slot. Henrik won't be a#1 guy after this deal ends.

The offence would be in huge trouble if the centre ice spot remains the same after the next 2 years.

Man, Loui's agent did his job. $28 million in signing bonus money per cap friendly. Only $8 million in annual salary. If his play drops like Burrows/Higgins, he would have pocketed well over $30 million for his time, be it 4 or 5 years even after a buyout.
