Keep in mind on the cap space that you don’t really want to go into the season capped out. You need room for call ups for non-long term injuries and of course a hope to add if the situation warrants it.

They'll be in LTIR all the way starting from the final day of the off-season so they might as well spend right up to the $85M mark prior to Ferland's LTIR placement because there's no cap advantage from being a couple of million lower. The roster moves that they can make to accommodate short-term injuries (< 23 on the roster, and/or trade away a higher salary and replace on the roster with a lower salary) will have to be made during the season.

Year by year breakdown:

1 - 1,500,000 (500k signing bonus)
2 - 2,700,000
3 - 3,250,000 (ntc)

That breakdown is almost as if 2022-23 is a UFA year. As far as I can tell it is not, but maybe the Canucks know something that I don't. Or maybe they just didn't know it wasn't a UFA year.

Benning supporters: "$1.5M is an awesome caphit for a backup goalie of Halak's calibre."

CapFriendly: "Not so fast..."

People called it a great trade before the contract was even signed, called it a great contract before the details were even known. I mean it's not surprising.

I posted a long list of comparables in his thread. Players like him are getting 1-1.5M for RFA years and 2-2.5M for UFA years. This is a gross overpayment. Ryan Hartman is basically a dead-on comp who was signed at 3x1.7M four months ago.

That seems like a random comp.

I had Barbashev as the comp who just signed 2 years at $2.25 mil.

Interesting. Thanks, as usual, for doing the work.

Here's the post for anyone too lazy to search who missed it earlier: Confirmed with Link: - [VAN/DAL] Canucks acquire F Jason Dickinson for 2021 3rd Round Pick

Has anyone posted confirming that there is trade protection in the third year?

It's not a "random" comp. It's the best comp I could find based on the production, age, years of service, and the fact that the contract was just signed 4 months ago. I included Barbashev as well in the 15-player list I made.

It's only "great" contract if Dickinson establishes himself as a high quality 3C who can take pressure off Horvat and Pettersson during EV time. Otherwise... meh. The best that we can say is that it's not a cap-crippling contract.

The best thing I can say about it is that at least Dickinson is only 26 and will likely be at least a useful NHL player and probably not fall off the face of the earth like all the 32-year-old bottom-six junk we've had in the past. But personally I think Dallas did well to get a 3rd round pick instead of signing this contract.

Yep.

This is an "optimism required" sort of transaction.

Good they avoided a potentially messy arbitration hassle and about what was to be expected. Seems a much better deal than having Beagle at 3.

Cap friendly retweeted Drance ‘a tweet so no trade protections at all

It’s quite scary how some ppl will jump to the worst conclusion even when it was stated other wise

2 - 2,700,000
3 - 3,250,000 (ntc)
Is that a legal contract?

Edit: the contract is actually:
$2m
$2.7m
$3.25m
(the signing bonus brings the first year to $2m)
