Tyler Myers was disgustingly misused in Buffalo, they tried deploying him as shutdown defender and he was utterly destroyed.

I fear that the Canucks will try and do the same with him, I fear they’re going to play him 25 minutes a night and try to make him something he isn’t.

Tanev and Edler always take the top assignments and it always has been that way. They needed a power play guy more than anything. Myers is going to be like -30 if Tanev and Edler get injured for long periods of time though..

I far from being a fan of Jimbo but this is not that bad of a deal. Come to expect bad decisions out of Benning but this was is far less obviously bad. Should wait on how he plays before we start getting hyperbolic.

Myers was chewing up 2o minutes a night on the Jets and has been trending in the right way. Has some offense although he will be pressed to put up as good numbers in Vancouver as he could with a talent laden Jet team. At his best, he is a legit top 4 NHL defenseman although probably slips from that on occasion.

Being positive top 4 of Edler, Stecher, Tanev and Myers is decent. If Hughes has good season things will be better. Benn seems likely to be here and with him and Biega you have some depth.

Signing might mean Hutton is gone.

This isn't the worst news if it's true. 5 years what what I felt was the best case scenario and honestly....6 isn't the worst cap hit for someone we are expecting to step into a top four role.

My problem is our pro scouting for D has been brutal. Is Myers a top four guy? He didn't look awful filling in for Buff and Trouba in Winnipeg but I don't think we can expect Edler level contributions from this guy even in a best case scenario.

But at least we didn't trade for him and give him this contract (Sutter or Gudbranson as examples).

I'd rather we didn't do this but we were going to spend money somewhere. Will Myers be better than Eriksson? I bloody well hope so. Will he be better then Roussel and Beagle combined? I'm optimistic. Will be better then Gagner and Del Zotto or Nilsson? There is no way he can be worse as an investment.

I will wait and see what happens with this. The impartial posters in the Trade and Rumors thread seem to like this. I haven't had much exposure to Myers since he started falling down the depth chart in Winnipeg. However, I do appreciate the Canucks finally shoring up the defense and not doing something completely Pejorative Slured like overpaying bottom six forwards.

I will reserve judgement until I see him in training camp. I did think he'd be a great fit for the Canucks at one time. But I really envision this going badly with Myers being overplayed in roles that don't suit him and getting BTFO once injuries start.

Brandon Sutter’s +\- was really good when the Canucks acquired him despite having terrible underlying numbers, at least Sutter was playing tough minutes.

Myers has been given easy minutes in Winnipeg as Trouba and Byfuglien are just much better players.

Well I don't see Myers getting top pairing minutes, I see him as a 4th dman and not a top 2 or bottom pairing. If Stecher or Tanev are injured one of them will be the ones to play top minutes before Myers does I hope.

Make my day.
So those places only have questionable players or does Benning have a skill of identifying the crappy ones?

Unlike Loui, who was awful from day one, I think we’ll get a couple good years out of him.
We said the same about Loui:get two good, two meh, two bad out of Loui. We got 0 good, it's questionably if we even got a meh.

Remember when Myers put up 40s pts as a rookie and won the Calder trophy?
After that, he was poorly developed by the Sabres, they deployed him as a defensive defacement which was the complete opposite of what he is. I think that was when he fell off from the rail of becoming a good player.

I was hoping for the worst of 7 years at 8 million, but I think I I said earlier 5 years at 6.5
But 5 years at 6 million isn't too bad...eh it is what it is.
We got that Ed Jovanovski big man defensemen which has lacked since 2006..

Uhhhhh...

Ed Jovanovski 6'1 209 lbs
Erik Gudbranson 6'5 217 lbs
Tyler Myers 6'8 229 lbs

Seems to me that Gudbranson already was a big man dman... But, maybe I'm missing something because I haven't followed the Canucks closely in the better part of a decade.

I hope you're happy with your new signing tommorow. Looking at the listed Canuck core, signing Myers doesn't have any repercussions for the upcoming expansion draft either, the only dman on the roster that screams needing protection is Hughes - and that's unproven hype so far, because he looks promising but hasn't done anything yet.

It is what it is with this group, our defense has been bad for years.
Any upgrade would be fine with me.

Myers will be the new Gudbranson. Now we just need a Pouliot replacement so Benning's tenure of offering atleast two deadweights term and massive money continues to trend annually every July.

Oh to have your optimism.
I think that early on, he'll likely have a couple of mediocre/weak years but with okay counting stats and people will frustratingly argue that they were good years on that basis..... and then after those couple of years, when the totals start to dissipate, it will become really apparent how ineffective he is.

He won't be the new Gudbranson.
Gudbranson was awful with and without the puck, and was playing like the worst defenceman in the NHL.
Myers is an overpaid #4-5 whos decent offensively.
