That's an element, but they wouldn't be reliant on lower rounders to be filling in the pipeline right now if they'd had firsts in 2020 and 2021, as those players would (or at least should) be on their way into the fold in the same way that Podkolzin and Hoglander were in the past couple seasons.

Edit: To elaborate a bit, I guess what I mean is that if you're not developing lower rounders then that's a problem, but if you're forfeiting firsts for multiple years and you're still in a building stage then you're almost certainly in for some shit.
the post I was quoting was in reference to the d pipeline, which will not be filled with tanking and poor development. So thats the context the conversation.

So if OJ was a good 3/4 D man, and the we kept those picks and picked BPA, and they happened to be D men with top 4 potential, then yea I concede our pipeline would be good for D… But that leaves a bunch of stuff to chance, and then we would suck balls without Miller.

The only, and I mean only way to have a good sustainable pipeline, especially at the D position and even more true at RD is to develop well, not even amazingly well. 1 player every 2 years would be a huge bonus.

If we want sustainable success, the first thing we should do is offer bags of cash to anyone we can steal out of the Nashville development setup.

I don’t think so… YMMV

Mainly we haven’t developed young players well for well over a decade. If we constantly have even just 1 player every 2 years taken after the 1st round actually reach there ceiling, thats how you get a deep prospect pool… then you don’t have to worry about the 7 others that don’t work out.

Players that go straight to the NHL (high picks) don’t do anything for your prospect pool and mask over bad development…

The Oilers are not like Tampa because even though they have drafted a heap of NHL talent, they suck at developing outside of guys that walk into the NHL.
Agree with this statement but your original post said .......
You have a good pipeline when you can have these prospects suck and it doesn’t matter, its not good when you kinda need for them to surpass there draft position and make it.
also it's important to take notice of the new managements group of development coach hires and that we dont really know at 18-21ish who is gonna work out and who will not

Apologies for getting off topic but without top picks this group has decided to see what they can develop from Johansson Karlsson Baines Aman as well as the Jurmo Pettersson Truscott Myrenberg picks.

I wrote a deep dive of Pettersson's game for the Daily Hive. Looks at his developed defensive game in transition, how he handles sustained pressure, transition habits, and puck retrievals.

Elias Petterssons switch?

Highly entertaining translation there.

Anyhow, I think EP2's name from here on in should be Re Pete.

I'm getting 'Alex Edler' vibes from Pettersson II. Could the Canucks have hit a blueline home-run with another Swedish d-man?

2:52? what the hell is that.

EP2 looks good though keep er goin

It's pretty common in the SHL and Liiga to dress 7 defencemen and have that player be a rookie. They usually only get a few shifts. They'll bounce between the parent club and the Jr. club.

For instance, he's played 11 games in the SHL and 7 games in the Jr. league.

Yep and in the junior games i have watched he has looked like a top range dman in that range

He starts all situations PP and PK, talks a lot both teammates and refs and has a calm presence in how he plays

Looks massive at development camp. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s 6’3 200lbs right now.

Hoping for a d+2 similar to William Wallinder.

Team Sweden at WJC will be fun to watch with Willander/Pettersson/Lekkerimaki.

Elite Prospects has him at 6’3 196lbs so he’s definitely grown. Unexpected but positive development.

It's still early......but D-Petey and Wilander look like a possible top-two pairing for the Canucks over the next decade.

Helps ease the sting of the Juolevi face-plant.

Lot of high hopes for this player. I think he has the potential to be a nightmare matchup defensive player that may even be able to handle top pair minutes when there are injuries. That’s wishful thinking but he has the size, tenacity, and tools to be 2/3 dman with little no offensive upside.

I wouldn't trade him for an early 2nd.
Hey! You’re the guy who said Willander will be a home run pick and that Hughes and Willander may potentially be the best pairing in the NHL if I recall correctly!

I hope you’re right!

Very excited for Pettersson.

I've said many times... at some point you got to draft Defensemen and you need to draft them high when you're not finding late round gems. The problem really goes way back. Juolevi was the first Dman the Canucks drafted in the first round since Bourdon. With Juolevi busting, Hughes is the only other Dman the Canucks drafted in the first round since Willander.

With that said, having a first doesn't mean you end up drafting a Dman, nevermind the right Dman. In 2020 we could have drafted a Dman had we kept our first or someone like Connor Zary who would have been a legitimate BPA pick.

In 2021, the Canucks very likely wouldn't have drafted a Dman. After Clarke (whom the Canucks apparently liked) was drafted, the next Dmen to go were Ceulemens and Lambos.

PeteyD looks good. I hope he continues to develop. I'm kind of bummed out we traded Myrenberg who is another ~6'3" RHD.

I’m incredibly high on D Petey. I wonder if we’ll be using his middle name (Nils) as away of differentiating between EP40 and him.

Regardless, his skating ability, physicality, and defensive IQ and instincts are all projectable as a top 4 defenseman. An 18 year old playing 15 minutes a night and on the first PK unit, while being the toughest defenseman on the ice, is rare in the SHL. First to defend teammates, always involved in scrums, all the while being physically imposing as a kid. Perhaps he becomes like an Erik Cernak or a Josh Manson.

I can see this being our defensive unit 2 seasons from now:

Hughes - Willander
D Petey - Hronek
Soucy/Hirose - McWard
