Being in great shape doesn't magically make the warts and inconsistencies in his game disappear.

It's clear Tocchet does not trust him to play high leverage minutes or PK minutes. So you have a guy playing bottom-6 minutes (and some PP, which is almost negligible given how little time the 2nd unit gets) that the coach doesn't trust defensively.

So usage wise you pretty much have another Sprong but at 3M instead of 900k. Management and coaches must really believe he has another gear, or at least will eventually play a more mature and well-rounded game.

But now I'm just not sure......hasn't been the best start to the season for Hoglnder, and his $3m contract doesn't cut in until next season. So any team acquiring him, is getting him for the rest of this season at just over $1m a season.

With Canucks having more holes in their blueline that Swiss cheese, Hoglander may have to sacrificed to shore it up.

I knew he wouldn’t match his shooting percentage from last year, but I thought he’d get more opportunity in the top 9 and with it more shots to maybe have a 20-20 season even at a 13-14% shooting percentage. But more than that I think he just hasn’t been quite the consistent buzz saw we saw last year

It's 14 games. Whether he fits or not is a different conversation. He's 24, by all accounts, a bundle of energy and a popular teammate that has a decent play level as a kid and works his ass off. He scored 24 goals last year at ES. He has averaged 17 per 82 at 12 min TOI, and no PP time. His takeaways to giveaways is solid. Yet you have people who want to run him out of town. Same outfit hates Pettersson because he's a bit chilly.

Bring back Loui Eriksson.

I will take any player who can score 24 goals with no pp time, as Hoglander did last year! Seems to get little respect from the fans, just like many wanted Garland traded last year...hard to understand the Rodney Dangerfield "lack of respect". Thank goodness management did not follow the fans desire to trade Garland last year and I trust they will not follow the fans desire in this case.

Hoglander is a fairly typical middle 6 player. Inconsistent and as a result streaky. His contract is perfectly in line to what he brings in the end. It's a mid to low level value contract in todays NHL. Likely puts him around 200th or so for forwards.

His ES goals last year and reasonable contract I think makes him an attractive trade piece to get something for the backend.

He looked much better when he was playing with Suter and Sprong on the 4rth line

When Hoglander signed that extension it was pretty clear that he was going to be a project for the coaching staff. They are betting they can sand off the rough edges to his game by next season when his new deal kicks in. While he might have hit a new level with his fitness he still doesn't think the game the way we need him to. Just last game he was on his own in the neutral zone after his line had defended for a stint, and he slowed up looking for someone to pass the puck to and you could hear someone yelling at him to get the puck deep. He's great from below the faceoff dots but he needs to soilify his game over the rest of the ice.

One the one hand he'll be a great bargain deal if he can figure out how to play in Tocchet's system and take on the role of one of our more expensive wingers, but I don't think he has much time to get there before he'll be shipped out.

I get that he doesn't always play defensively the way Tocchet wants, but I don't think I've ever seen Tocchet as publicly angry with a player as he seems to get with Hogs.
