Wait, isn’t it a “fact that all the later round draft picks of the Benning years, either age out as prospects or don't get signed to begin with”?
It's relatively easy to check. Beginning in say 2016 to Benning's departure in 2021, the Canucks drafted a total of 32 guys from rounds 3-7.

And they ended up signing a total of seven of them to entry level contracts. A few others signed AHL contracts, but were never heard of again.

And yes, of all those players drafted in rounds 3-7 in Benning last six years as Canucks GM, just one is still with the organization. And of course that's Arturs Silovs. And they probably have Ian Clark to thank for that.

Proves I guess, you can't lose 'em all.

That was kind of the basis for Benning making changes to the scouting staff (which some here took issue with) including letting go of Brackett's buddy Palango. Our OHL drafting appears to be (and hopefully) better.

The backup job is Silovs' for now. But if he were to falter, the Canucks do have some goaltending depth in the minors.

Tolopilo actually had a better AHL season last year than Silovs; and Patera on most nights was the only thing keeping the lowly Henderson Silver Knights in hockey games. And he even played a few games for Vegas and performed pretty well.

The reality is though, the Canucks are heading into this season without the kind of 'safety net' offered by a veteran guy like Casey DeSmith. But unless Silovs' playoff performance was a total mirage, they should be OK.

In fairness to Benning, the Canadian amateur scouts have been horrid in like forever (going back several Canuck GMs).

Flyers fan coming in peace. Apparently Šilovs has overtrained during off-season. Olympic qualifiers for Milano 2026 start this week (Thursday).

GoogleTranslated coach comment from our media:

"He is ready to start the tournament. If I'm not mistaken, he had his first training session already on June 12, he is overworked. Since then, he has been training four times a week. Arthur is in good physical condition, he is currently overworked and the medical staff determined that the danger limit of turning this situation into a chronic injury is high. We decided to protect him a little, let's see,"

Edit to say overtrained works better in this context than overworked

Overtraining/overworking seems like a common theme for Canucks goaltending. Was this the standard set by Ian Clark?

Possible the Canucks don't want him risking getting injured in this tournament? Latvia still the favourites to win their group without Silovs.

It’s very likely management “pulled” him because they know Silovs will need to play for us and we can’t risk starting the season with Patera as our starter.

Kind of a shocker - but given the proximity to training camp, is it really?

The “NHLers” on that roster are pretty fringe - and more notable Latvian NHLers are also not going.

Bluegers and Merzlikins are not going either. Whether the rumour that he's overtrained is true or this is just precautionary given this season's importance to his career and the team, makes no sense for him to participate.

Blueger will be missed, but Elvis with his antics and that performance in previous Worlds... He had an interview for main local sports magazine recently and there were diva quotes again. We can do without him and play Gudļevskis against SLO/FRA and Grigals vs Ukraine.

"This injury could threaten the start of the new season in the Vancouver Canucks NHL club. The national ice hockey team of Latvia has announced goalkeeper Āriks Vītola, who just yesterday played a game in the Finnish club JYP, and today he will go on the ice with the Latvian national team." Translated by Google

Edit: Anyone have a lightly used pair of goalie knees they can donate?

They (LHF) are causing drama where it is unnecessary with this phrasing. This COULD be a problem for NHL season IF we pushed forward w him as starter in this qualy, which won't happen (we have already submitted three goalies - Gudļevskis, Grigals and Vītols). Since we are NOT doing that, but resting him - there's no need to panic (I have some inside sources on this, no sarcasm).

To answer this - we are still the favourites, but words ''Olympic hockey qualifiers'' make Latvian hockey fans' eyes twitch.

2022 OG qualifiers - we barely scraped a win vs France (2:1 in decider). They outshot us 13:6 in the last period. I was there in Arena Riga, and it was WAY closer than it should had been.
2018 OG qualifiers - needed any kind of win vs Germany, lost 2:3, scoring our first goal only on 35th minute.
2014 OG qualifiers - needed just one point (!) vs France, at tie game Sotnieks made a brain-dead turnover on blue line, goalie stopped a 1on1 breakaway with less than 10 seconds to go, we could had been out there and then. I did not see the game as I had very important meeting, and after seeing this play in recording was sure watching it live would kill the few remaining nerve cells present.

You have to go back to 2010 OG qualifiers to find a scenario where we qualified without fans collectively reaching for cardiovascular medicine.

Edit: it's most likely going to be Gudļevskis vs Slovenia and France; Grigals vs Ukraine.

Somebody needs to ask the organization at some point why the Hell this keeps happening.

While I agree that the training, medical, and strength and conditioning staff should be open with what goes on, I don’t know that this is really terribly different than what other teams go through. Injuries are a fact of life in the NHL, including ones to critical players.

That makes sense, thanks for clarifying.
