Canucks Re-Sign Filip Hronek to 8y/7.25m Contract

Had my doubts about re-signing Hronek to that big extension. But now with the salary cap set to hit $95m, his contract is a bargain.

He's really opened my eyes since Hughes went down. He's a truly legit, top-two d-man who shoots from the right side--almost impossible to find via the trade route or even the draft.

So the trade with Detroit ends up being the Islanders first rounder (Axel Sandin-Pellika) at 18th overall in 2023 for Hronek.

Yes, you could say at this stage, that the Canucks won this trade. Hronek's contract, assuming he stays healthy, is an absolute 'bargain' for a right-shot defender who can reliably put up 40-50 points a season.

I think it was a good trade to re-allocate resources to the back-end. ASP might be the better long-term player, but the Canucks probably would have traded the pick regardless (and who knows who they would have drafted if they didnt). But with the cap going up I don’t think Bo’s contract is bad. I’d take him back to be 2C again now that Miller is gone. One of the radio guys was talking about Bennett potentially getting 10 this off-season if he leaves Florida, so 8.5 for Bo isn’t the worst.

Since Miller was traded, Hronek is running a score adjusted CF%/xGF% of 54/53% when away from Hughes. He’s at 57/56% with Hughes full season, so he’s definitely showing his worth of late.

Following up on this, he’s now at 51% in both since the Miller trade and only slightly behind full season. Given the state of the forward group and the fact he is getting low 40% o-zone starts, I’d say he’s more than proving his worth.

Always been a huge fan but this year he's really proving it when Hughes was injured. I feel like he actually neuters about 40% of his game when paired with Hughes. Because what do you do? You're playing with the best defenseman in the world. You have to defer

carrying his own pair...he's a beast !

Since making that deal, Det has still just missed the PO by a few points these past 2 seasons. Getting closer, but they don't have the gamechangers to be a force. Still waiting on either Cossa/Augustine to develop to be their G.

Larkin is already going to turn 29 this year. Time goes by fast. It's still mostly Larkin/Raymond up front and a drop off from the rest of the under 30 Forward group.

Hronek had an excellent run of about 11 games and held his head above water without Hughes. That's what is needed given what he is paid. If he continues this without Hughes, while having a few offensive bursts along the way, he's providing value or surplus value.

In a year with such turmoil, what he's done to finish the season is encouraging.

Also the age at when he signed. 2016 draft pick (late bday) signing for 8 years in 2024. 8 years post draft puts him at 26 going on 27 in 2024. So, would end at 34 turning 35. Marcus is 29 this year and got 6 years til 35. So, not inking these guys to 37/38 years of age.
