I love him as a prospect but there’s no such thing as a lock like that. Even Owen power in Buffalo is struggling this year.

Again, would depend on the transition, but he looks dynamite. He led the KHL defensemen in scoring last season, doing so again this season on a worse SKA team, all the while being very good in his own end.

While a Necas/Nikishin-led package may be fair, that would have meant making a huge downgrade to the roster for this season. Hard to imagine they would have blown things up this season rather than wait until the offseason, even if they had the contours of a deal in place.
not if they got Guentzel too

I wonder if a guy like Pesce was involved too.

How instrumental was that Bo Horvat trade now? The grass didn't stay green in Long Island for Bo. The Canucks are #1 & the Isles are out. Plus they demonstrated the will to trade important players they can't come to terms with & set that precedent.

This felt like Vancouver’s trump card in the whole ordeal—either sign with us now or we’ll trade you to a situation you may not want to go to. It plays on the psychology of “better the devil you know.”

Just saying, boy am I glad that we have Rutherford steering the ship at this time. This moment would be a disaster if Jim Benning was still at the helm.

I think Petey would have asked out long ago if Benning was still in charge.

I'm not dunking on anyone or celebrating anything until a deal is signed. This story from Friedman seems to contradict Seravalli's in some ways - I'm guessing each side is trying to push a narrative, here. I don't really care as long as the deal get signed.

Yeah, I don't necessarily think the trade talks would have been for right now unless there was some other upgrade included.

They’d still be banking on bringing in three new top-6 forwards within a month of the deadline and hoping they mesh. Pretty big risk to take this late in what has been a successful season so far.

I wonder if a guy like Pesce was involved too.

Would make sense if only to balance salaries for this year.

That's quite a tactic by JR/Allvin, if true.

Basically they went to Petey and said, "we have a trade to Carolina lined up if you don't re-sign ASAP", to apparently force him back into negotiations.

And I guess it worked?

Honestly, I kind of support it. He wants the bag, and the team wants to plan the future of the team. If Petey doesn’t want to be there, then let the team plan ahead to get the most out of things… if you want to stay then so be it, but again the team wants some time to plan things (i.e. opposite of Jim benning era)

Definitely a big fan of how mgmt is seemingly handling this situation.
Ppl with functioning brains is rare and they're doing things close to exactly how I would, it's quite the relief.

Gotta be top five mgmt group already if not top three, not that the bar is high, and after the top ten or twelve the rest of the nhl is dinosaur trash.

They remind me so much of Vegas' FO. This is an FO that can make the moves needed to contend for a cup.

"If you want to be here, let's ****ing get something done or we're going to be forced to trade you. We want to win the cup. Your choice."

Ruthless.

What a weird thing to get leaked. I just do not understand the rush to get Pettersson signed right this second when he has two more RFA years remaining.

The team is having an amazing season. Worry about the contract in the offseason. This is not like JT Miller who was gonna be a UFA. Management should be focused on getting this current roster as much help as possible before the deadline so they can make a run right now.

They'd really risk blowing this up because a guy who said he wanted to wait until the offseason has stood by that belief? Like that's some unprecedented situation and cannot possibly be resolved in the summer?

By the same token, shouldn't they be freaking out over Hronek?

Say for argument's sake the team flames out and Pettersson is disgruntled and indicates he wants to leave. Teams will line up to trade and extend him this summer.

Canucks:
-we know Pettersson's agents and the Canucks talked on Tuesday
-discussions have continued
-negotiating a variety of options
-suspect the AAV will come in just slightly above Nylander's 11.5
