Canucks & NHL News, Rumours, & Fantasy GM | Chaos Week

“The Canadiens have looked into DeBrusk this offseason and that’s not the first time they have,” the source told Murphy’s Hockey Law recently. “They looked into signing him when he was an unrestricted free agent and then again at the last trade deadline.”

After spending the first seven seasons of his NHL career with the Boston Bruins, Jake DeBrusk signed a seven-year, $38.5 million ($5.5M AAV), contract with the Vancouver Canucks. With the Canucks entering what appears to be a massive rebuild, reports have indicated that the 29-year-old DeBrusk is willing to waive his full no-movement clause if the Canucks and he can find the right fit.

It’s no secret that the Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver Canucks have discussed a potential trade that would accommodate the wishes of longtime Canadiens winger Brendan Gallagher and send him to the Canucks. Gallagher is entering the final season of a six-year, $39 million contract that carries a $6.5 million salary cap hit. Sending DeBrusk and his $5.5 million cap hit back to the Canadiens would help alleviate that cap hit for the 34-year-old Gallagher.

DeBrusk, who was drafted by the Boston Bruins 14th overall at the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, had 23 goals and 19 assists in 81 games this past season. DeBrusk has 189 goals and 167 assists in 628 career regular season games in the NHL. The Edmonton native has 27 goals and 20 assists in 86 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Marco D’Amico of RG Media and ‘The Starr And D’Amico Show’ has reported that the Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver Canucks have discussed the potential of including Canucks center Elias Pettersson in a potential Gallagher trade, but per the source above, those have only been exploratory discussions. It should be noted that D’Amico confirmed that the Canucks would be willing to retain part of the $11.6 million cap hit Pettersson’s eight-year, $92.8 million contract carries but that ‘retention won’t come cheap’

“DeBrusk just makes more sense cap wise and evens off a Gallagher trade better,” the source above said. “The fact they have liked him since the 2024 offseason means this is worth watching to see what happens.”

As much as I want to be an ass and say RJ & Sedins are incompetent sitting around doing nothing in this beautiful sellers market.

I think it’s more so about having a team full of players nobody wants.

We have DeBrusk - who 110% should be dealt.

Hronek who should 100% be dealt but won’t waive.

So not surprised it’s quiet on our front.

They would be a team that could go Reid at 2
Might work on canucks favor if they want stenberg.
Leafs need defense too. Going Mckenna and Stenberg might be too much but will appease their fans for sure.
Theyll likely go Mckenna and a dman(reid)

Among other things Canucks have to make some decesions on whether to make qualifying offers on some of their RFAs. That includes Aman, Klimovich and Joesph.

I'm guessing they won't be qualified by the 29th and they will become free agents.

Could be some of them could return on an AHL contract but more likely they are gone.

Believe Klimovich should be given a further look but can see the argument against that. I think, as I said elsewhere, Klimo will likely he will be picked up by someone.

Aman would really help Abbotsford but likely seen as too expensive and no longer an option in Vancouver.

Joesph was mostly garbage last year and at 26 aging out as a prospect.

Also need to consider others such as Brisebois, Douglas, Kane, Blueger, Forbert, LaBate, Petera. Probable that the only ones under consideration are Brisebois (to help Abby) and Douglas.
