Canucks & NHL News, Rumours, & Fantasy GM | Chaos Week

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
Pecorino, it’s the competitor to Parmesan if you know your Italian cuisine. True carbonara or Cacio e Pepe is made with pecorino.

That being said the name also pays tribute to Mike Peca.
I was definitely kidding about Mike cheese lol.

Although I didn't know anything about Pecorino other than that it is a cheese, so you. still taught me something with this post.

One thing I think posters don’t appreciate are the constraints imposed on GMs.

Like, on the Byram trade, is it a good trade? Looks like a significant overpayment, but if Byram continues to develop, and it pushes the Hawks towards a playoff spot and Bedard re-signs long term, then it’s a success.

The Hawks have acquired and made a ton of picks over the past few years. Basically what all the pro-rebuild crew (including myself) want to do. But it hasn’t worked out very well. You can say bad drafting, but a ton of it is bad luck. Bad development? Sure.

At some point, when you have a player like Bedard, you need to start making trades to be competitive.

I think their main issue has been targeting bad veterans. As far as I’m aware, they haven’t added any great players via free agency or trade. Bertuzzi was a decent add. Teravainen, Maroon, and Foligno were all over the hill. Hall didn’t work out for whatever reason. Then they take a bunch of good/okay middle 6 cap dumps like Mikheyev, Dickinson, Mangiapane, Burakovsky, etc. which is similar to Seattle’s approach and it just doesn’t seem to work.

San Jose, on the flip side, has rounded out their roster with fairly productive players like Toffoli and Orlov, and has flipped veterans for lots of picks like Walman, Blackwood, Granlund/Ceci, etc

I get the fact that GM's want to appease star players, particularly with so many guys around the league demanding a trade when their teams falter.

But at some point GM's have to step up and do the right thing. Surrendering a fourth overall pick for Bowen Byram, is a flat-out bad deal, even if Bedard hangs around for a little longer.

And if the Sabres use that pick to draft a guy like Chase Reid, it's the kind of deal that could haunt Chicago for the next decade.

We all saw what happened when Rutherford tried to placate Quinn Hughes by signing all his friends to big-ticket contract extensions in Vancouver. In the end, he left anyway.

I would chalk Chi's struggles with their highly drafted dmen so far to 90% bad development rather than any other factor.

Optimal development for 99% of dmen is going to be that they don't touch the nhl for more than a cup of coffee until their D+2 at the earliest but Chi couldn't help themselves from drowning their top picks way too early.
