Let's all be very very clear, the Canucks lose any trade involving Quinn Hughes going the other way.
The 'best player in franchise history' has earned the right to call his own shots on his hockey future.

And he's worth whatever he and his agent ask for to stay in Vancouver. So if he does 'go', it won't be about money or term on his contract. It will be about whether or not he feels this team will ever be a Cup contender.

And if he goes into his UFA year and basically advises the Canucks he won't be re-signing--then they can explore the trade market. But as Rypper has pointed out; There's just no way of getting anything near equivalent value back.

So we’re in agreement, Cup or bust.

Problem is, I struggle to see a number that Chicago doesn't match. If anything we probably make their life easier, unless we get creative with the offer sheet.

Bedard doesn't want to commit to the Blackhawks, If we offer a standard 7 x $ deal they just say thank you very much and match it.

It's not even like they're a have not team either if the you try to offer sheet him a one year, signing bonus heavy contract. They'd match that too.

Can't do the old sign a one year offer sheet to walk him to ufa so you can sign him long term then because he's only going to be 20 with 3 seasons accrued.

I’d bet money that no impactful FA (Marner, Bennett, Ehlers) sign here.

There is zero reason to other than Nucks offer 10-20% above anyone else. Even then I don’t see it.

It’s going to likely be another DeBrusk like signing if anything. That’s best case scenario.

You’d hope one of them sees a chance to play with 43 and jumps at it, but the almighty dollar usually does win.

In the end I agree, stupid money will be handed out by GMs trying to save their own skin. Ours already happened.

It's pretty well guarantied that the Canucks won't want to blow their entire off-season cap room on signing a couple of marquee free agents. Instead they're going to want to enter next season, with all the cap flexibility as they muster.

And for the first time in what seems like 'forever' I doubt they'll be prioritizing d-man this off-season. The blueline has been such a mess for so long, that a lot of their cap space got eaten up just trying to deal with that black hole.

So the focus will be on affordable depth forwards up front--preferably a center or two. And maybe 'in season' they'll have the cap room to add a better player on an expiring contract.

Ehlers is kind of a Debrusk signing.

The only fair trade would be for Makar but it will never happen.

The Bedard talk is just a pipe dream. Chicago would not even trade him 1on1 with Hughes going the other way.

Nope not even close.
Ehlers is not a top line impact player like Marner. Bennett will get paid because of his playoff performances or he'll stay in Florida for cheaper.

Ehlers is the type of player you target when you're not in on the biggest fish.

Ie. Canucks were trying for Guentzel, missed, signed Debrusk.

Which trade chance for firat overall was traded for star player needing to be signed
Gretzky, Hall?

It very rarely happens, Lafleur? They used to be owned and there was no FA around or they are kept until their value is diminished.

So like the OEL buyout this could be historic too. It is that or he walks away and the team really has nothing in return because they HAVE to get anything before he walks.

If he was a draft pick or a RFA that got an offer sheet the would get quite a haul in return.

Ehlers is a top line impact player and a material upgrade on Boeser.

Forget it

I think the Canucks will absolutely target big fish like Marner, Ehlers, Bennett, etc. Both because it fills a need, but also, after a disaster season, the Canucks want to sell hope to both their players and their fans.

Whether any of them can be enticed to come here is another matter.

I also agree that, if Tocchet were in charge, Bennett would likely be his No. 1 target.
Only Bennett is a center from those 3 and there are alot of miles on him for a long term contract.
