Then that's an entirely different point from what I was arguing.

They certainly haven't given up competing for the playoffs (as others have vehemently argued about) but they're not in the position to mortgage the future and join the arms race.

It would stink if they miss after all this but it's one of the least harmful options including letting Boeser walk. If you argue they should have monetized him then sure, but that leads to the other argument of whether any team in our position would do so.

I don't know, I watch the games. This team is not well-positioned for a playoff push. They are inconsistent, offensively impotent, and are extremely questionable in net with Demko on the shelf. I will buy the argument they did not want to sell in a playoff spot, but cutting this roster loose and saying "oh well" seems an odd approach to me. It's not a good roster.

Welp, that was a whole lotta nothing.

I'm actually not too bothered. The reason this team is where it's at in the standings is based on a few things that went sideways this year:
-Demko injury: Lankinen has been great, Silovs not so much. With Demko healthy they would have 4-8 more points right now. That would put them solidly 3rd in the division, right behind Edmonton and within spitting distance of 1st.
-Hughes injury: harder to assess the impact on the standings but it had an impact.
-Miller fiasco: forget the who, what, why. It sucked and dragged down the team.
-EP40 Play: absolutely terrible this year. Does anyone believe he won't rebound at east a little. Maybe not worth 11.6 but a valuable player none the less.

Bottom line is, if 3 of those 4 things went right this year, they would be in a solid playoff spot and possibly ready for a run. I don't think they can be considered a top tier contender even if everything went right, but they can build on playoff experience and be even better in the future.

This is still a team that is growing around a core that could develop into a championship team if some things go their way. Last year everything went right. This year everything went wrong. They lost Miller, which is a huge blow, but they have had some very significant advances by young players, pretty much fixed the defense, and have way more cap space than they've had in recent memory. In this context I can see why they kept Boeser.

This has nothing to do with Jim Benning. If we were in 8th in 2016 I would have defended to high heaven the decision not to trade Hamhuis.

Again : this is how sports works. Teams in playoff positions do not sell. Having tantrums because the universal truths of pro sports have continued to hold is … weird, and pointless.
You’re absolutely wrong. Carolina sold today despite being in a much better position than a team with less than 50% shot at the postseason. Smart management groups know when to cut their losses and maximize their assets. This management group failed miserably today and are either going to watch two assets walk for nothing or retain them too contracts they weren’t prepared to do a week ago.

I mean…they aren’t a contender because they don’t actually want to win.
That is a weird thing to say. They went out and got Guentzel and acquired the biggest fish in Rantanen this season. Sure they didn't go for JTM but that guy has a lot of baggage. Other than that I don't get the thinking that "they don't actually want to win". What are you basing it on?

Hey everyone, I’m in a household full of sick people. It’s been this way since last week. I’m exhausted and not fully recovered myself.

The reason I’m tell you this is because my patience is very thin. This is the only public reminder I’ll give the community. Be respectful to each other. Do not insult.

Those who can’t be adults and abide by these rules will get the full brunt of my wrath.

It’s absolutely insane that so many fans here think that trying to make the playoffs when you’re sitting in a playoff spot is a bad thing.

Sports fandom in 2025 is absolutely warped.
First off. We're not in a playoff spot. Second. What's the goal? To make the playoffs or win the cup? Because those two don't always align.

Can’t wait to watch Rantanen play for them in the 1st round!
