Pretty underwhelming from a Capitals perspective. I was convinced they were going all in to give Ovi one last chance.

This thread has literally been the dumbest read I’ve had in 20+ years of posting here, and that’s saying something.

So many armchair GMs who refuse to acknowledge the reality that players are human beings who care about winning and that playoff revenue matters if you want to keep being a cap team.

Just a bunch of whining of how we possibly could do nothing and refusing to acknowledge the above realities.

People have played EA sports games more than they’ve worked for real companies with real-life people.

It's pretty likely they miss the playoffs regardless unless Hughes miraculously goes to see a witch doctor and Demko de-ages to pre-injury form.

They turned a 90-point player in Necas into a 40-point player in Stankoven. That sequence of trades is an utter disaster for Carolina.

Stankoven just turned 22 years old, was considered a borderline top-10 drafted prospect, and is in his rookie season - this is a very dumb take.

I’ve been anti getting pre-mad about things buuut I will say we are 35 minutes away at this point now and one of the dominos that I expected was one of Cozens / Norris.

Wonder where things go on that front… surely we acquire at least one forward here??

It's about the optics. Missing the playoffs under those circumstances can be blamed on injuries and a season where "everything just went wrong." Which isn't entirely inaccurate to say. Moving out Boeser and Suter is going for a retool that tells Hughes and the fanbase this year is done regardless if you come back.

Doesn't mean I agree with that decision or thought process though.

Meh...I don't think Necas is going to be a consistent 90 point player in Carolina and I don't think a 22 year old Stankoven will top out at 40 points.

Yeah that's a brutal oversimplification. Hard to see where Stankoven goes but he's on an ELC for another year and then the team has 4 more years of team control after that. Necas' contract expires in a year.

That said, the optics are not very good for Carolina right now. Are they competing this year? Or not?

Accept that likely nothing will be done today.

Rutherford/Alvin like to make trades early before the TDL based on past history. Nothing has been done means that there isn't anything out there. It's hard when you're in a position of weakness.

It’s literally a coin toss if they even make the playoffs. Sorry that some people want to see actual change and attempts at improving this sad sack loser franchise.

Carolina considers themselves a contender this season. Unless they flip those firsts for immediate help this is definitely a step back from that goal
