Portions of the last few pages feel like a lot of the 'let's trade Petey' posters are upset, leading with that emotion, don't necessarily follow the rest of the league very closely, and think the grass is always greener on the other side.
Let's look:
1. Our D is clearly finished being built. We have Hughes, Hronek, MPetey, Myers, DPetey, Soucy, Forbert, and Willander on the way.
So the idea that some rumor about Dobson has anything to do with us is hilarious.
Yes, let's create an expansion level group of forwards so we can have 50 million dollars on our D.
I get it's a message board and so you can wishcast and rosterbate all you want. But acknowledge that that's all it is. In no world would it make sense.
2. The forward trade targets:
Dylan Cozens? Lol. Sabres fans are frustrated and mostly don't believe in him at this point, certainly as a center. Would he be a good buy-low candidate with our cap space? I would be open to the idea. But in exchange for a forward who has shown himself to be a superstar in this league? Would go down in history as one of the worst trades ever made.
Petey is having a horrendous season by his standards and has 7 more points in 5 less games.
Oh but what about Cozens' potential? He's less than 2.5 years younger than Petey.
What about the cap savings? He only makes 4.5 million less and has shown a HELL of a lot less in this league.
If you had to compare the chances that either are a 'flash in the pan' it's Cozens and it's not even close.
I PROMISE that the same people who want to trade Petey would be pushing Cozens out the door if they watched the Sabres.
What about things other than points? Cozens bleeds chances against and has a negative affect on his linemates in terms of possession and chances.
Whereas Petey is genuinely a guy who could win the Selke.
Barzal:
The guy who has scored 20 goals twice in this league?
Again, if the Islanders ever went for a rebuild (apparently not on Lou's watch as they appear to be wandering lost in the desert), then leveraging cap space to acquire him would be something I would be open to but:
Petey's last season where everyone turned on him, he scored 4 more points than Barzal's career high.
Barzal overpasses. Great at zone entries but doesn't really take the middle of the ice enough. Great transporter (fast!) and really strong playmaker, but does little else at an elite level.
Prior to this season Petey has played 5 full seasons (injury shortened 56 game and this current season being excluded). EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THOSE YEARS he has scored more goals than Barzal's career high. Every one.
Petey's two best assist seasons (the last two) combine to be two assists behind Barzal's 2 combined best seasons of career highs in assists and one of them, in Barzal's case, was 8 years ago.
Petey is a far better two way player. Petey makes 2.5 million more which is a Casey Cizikas difference between the two.
Also, Barzal is a year and a half OLDER.
-
None of it makes any sense unless the premise is, "I'm angry at Petey, I don't watch those other players but I'm not angry at them so they must be better".
-
And again, Petey has been bad this year and half of last year. He knows it, and the team knows it. But he's also a human and humans show frailty from time to time.
Giving up on a superstar in his darkest moment is how you end up lost in the desert for 2 decades.
I genuinely understand how frustrating it is. It's frustrating to me too. But patience is the way out of this. Petey will get back to being an elite center and, with the fantastic D, strong depth, and another top 6 acquisition or two, we will be a very strong team again. That's the path.
Trading Petey at the absolute Nadir of his value is how you turn into Nashville of the last 25 years. No thank you.
