My guess is a trade is close and this is JR sending an early signal to calm the waters before shit hits the fan

I guess if I'm trying to see a useful strategy in that interview, it'd be that Rutherford is describing the problem as a chemistry issue, rather than that the players are broken. He's telling the market that with a fresh start either of these guys would return to form.

More likely, though, I think he's just an old dude who tells it as he sees it, strategy be damned. He's probably telling potential trading partners the same thing.

The only reason I can see for doing this is they're going to trade Pettersson, and they're getting out ahead on the damage control because they know this will be extremely unpopular with a not-insignificant portion of the fanbase.

The wording. How do you not throw in something like, "both parties are committed to while still teammates to work on their relationship for the betterment of the team". Something that doesn't say that "f*** this shit, I don't care anymore"

like as damage control after trading miller for kk, sure, confirm there was a rift, explain you had to do something to prevent additional implosions (which if not dealt with now could lead to the scorched earth approach), etc.
