As long as Hughes is healthy, I still think they sneak into the playoffs, but get bounced early. There's still potential for a re-tool, but the line is thinner than last year, and some key questions need to be answered this year:
Hoglander: Can he establish himself as a play-driving, middle six forward? It's tough to have two guys as small as him and Garland in your top 9, as it you need to find a lot more bigger, physical guys to round out the group for fear of being too small. Only way it works is if you're motor is 100% on and you're driving play (I'd have two Connor Garland's on the team any day).
M. Petey: Will he return to form as a bonafide number 3 dman? If so, alongside Willander later this year, the team should be able to change the narrative on the defense being an extreme area of concern to one of the best in the conference (assuming they re-sign him). Unlike upfront, there's a stable of young guys coming up who can fill in the bottom 2-3 spots over the next couple years as well.
Demko: Is he damaged goods, or just extremely rusty? The team's trajectory with a Vezina candidate vs. a below average backup in his spot is entirely different. If he was even playing in his poor form from two years ago the team likely has 4+ more points in his starts.
Chytil: Does he find chemistry in the lineup with anyone, and can he perform in leverage 2C minutes? What he is will determine what kind of C they need to acquire in the off-season to compliment him and Petey. Speaking of which...
Petey: Everything is pointless with this team if he can't re-discover his form as a bonafide 90+ two-way center who drives play. He theoretically got what he wanted with Miller gone, but he needs to step up as this team is bereft of top-end forward talent with Miller gone now.
There's obviously more than this (Boeser re-signing/play post Miller, Joshua finding his game, etc.) but these are the things to me that I'm most curious about. We know what Boeser is at this point, and I'm willing to bet even if Joshua doesn't refind his form he'll be fine next season.
