20. Christine Simpson and I taped a commercial with the Sedins, and while we were waiting, Henrik said a few of Vancouver’s young players would surprise in the preseason. Hopefully he wagers on sporting events for extra spending money, because this prediction was right on. Vancouver has some interesting decisions to make as Ben Hutton, Jared McCann and Jake Virtanen press for a roster spot. When asked if anyone specifically impressed him during their summer skates, Henrik picked Brendan Gaunce, also pushing for time. As the salary cap flattens, a few GMs indicated they believe that makes it even more important to be patient with your young players, but GM Jim Benning is warning his vets he’s prepared to go young.

I won't trust the rhetoric until heads start rolling. Right now I'm in the same boat as everyone else - I am frothing at the mouth to see Jared McCann and Ben Hutton make the team.

I have been preaching patience with Benning and seeing who is on the team before declaring that Benning has made the team older. He may not be good at getting value in trades or contract negotiations but he's a big picture guy who likes to get his team together as soon as can. People criticize him for not waiting to trade a player and get a better value but that's clearly not what he likes to do. He likes to have his group gelling as a team as early as possible. It would interesting to see what he does with players he have pencilled into the lineup but have been underperforming compared to the young guys. If the kids are ready and they are part of Benning's plan to the future, I fully expect Benning to go young.

It is great to see the kids tearing Benning's plans to pieces. Success inspite of Benning's plans looks to be a good thing.

keeping vets who suck over kids who have played lights out is sending a terrible msg and would go against whatever management has said

I agree, I believe this talk from Benning is BS. Seemed like we just kept playing the same lines over and over again last season no matter what the level of play was. Should be a meritocracy- earn your way in and out of the line up/special teams.

aaand here's WD. not real hard decisions actually for you apparently.

“We’ll have some real hard conversations in the next few days,” Desjardins said after the game. “It’s always disappointing because some guys have worked so hard and they are not going to get rewarded for how hard they worked. But at the same time we know that they are right there. If they go back to junior or to Utica we know we have guys who can play in the future.”

Well, they traded better players for inferior ones in order to keep some other crappy players. I don't think this is even a concern at this point.

Disagree. Benning planned for Baertschi and Corrado to make the team. Virtanen and maybe McCann was expected to be given a look. Vey was given a "this may be your last chance" message before even prospects camp. Most of us here expected Gaunce to push for a job but since he was waiver exempt it didn't matter. Hutton was a total surprise but he can be sent down so that's not a problem.

Benning didn't plan to start the year with Baertschi, Virtanen, McCann, Gaunce, and Hutton all in the lineup and he shouldn't. That would be a Dave Nonis type mistake. This is the type of situation that we want. We want the young guys pushing for jobs and the bubble guys be given a chance to keep their jobs. The question now is whether Benning is willing to let go of guys he had planned on being on the roster this season and open up spots for young players who look NHL ready and figure to be a bigger part of the team's long term future.

This sounds a lot like McCann to junior.

Why would he mention "junior" after Virtanen had 3 pts.?

Not surprisingly, he seems to be completely backing off the 'if young guys outplay veterans, guys will lose their jobs' stance of a couple weeks ago.

he didn't actually expect it to happen. he gets to be made a liar. it's awesome.

Prediction:
Nobody is actually going to lose a job.
Hutton is going to Utica to be a quality call-up.
Jake and Jared are going back to Junior.
Gaunce will be on the team for as long as Higgins is going to be out, and then like Hutton he becomes the quality call-up.

Canucks will roll...
Sedins-Burr
Baertschi-Sutter-Vrbata
Hansen-Horvat-Higgins
Vey-Dorsett
Edler-Tanev
Hamhuis-Weber
Sbisa-Corrado
Bartkowski

Canucks will exhaust these vet player's contracts before the kids ever get their shots. Waiver ineligible players will not be playing in the NHL when they can be held in reserve.

Big talk, no spine, and utterly boring.

If this happens I'll just laugh at the empty seats.

They managment doesn't want money if they send Virtanen and Mccann to Jnr instead of waiving v?ey to Utica

I actually don't mind that our better prospects may get sent down. This would force WD to play Prust, Dorsett and Vey 13-15 minutes a game.

This way, the Canucks will be boring and most likely crappy. Quick way to rid ourselves of this management.
