Cementing a Center that can put 20+ in the net is a priority for every team.

Great, let's see him over the 1st 40 games then sit down and talk. If he's put up 15 or so goals by then and provided everything Benning thinks, great pay him.

If Sutter put up the exact numbers he did last year, he is not a 1st day UFA signing (except by Benning). Apparently Benning just ignored what happened on the UFA market this year. No one got paid. No one will get that huge payday next year either with the CDN dollar.

Could have had him on shorter and less as a UFA in July next year.

Benning's problem is he ignored the leverage he has. He is a horrible negotitor.

Hey, we can arbitrate Sbisa for a 1 year show me at around 2mil then talk when he is an RFA again next year. Nah, let's lock that guy up to 3 years 3.6mil. Done.

What I don't understand from Benning is why did he ink Sutter to a new deal BEFORE he even played a single game?

The type of contract he got was not a bargain so if Sutter exploded with a career high, he'd still get the 4.4m retroactive NTC

If Sutter "explodes" for more than the 21 he scored last year he will likely be worth more than his contract.

 how many NHL centres will have 15 goals by game 41?

You and Benning. I would love to run a Casino they way you to bet on things.

If he does this, or if he does that despite not doing any of those IFs in 500 Gamess at the NHl level.

Further if the guy earned it over the first 40 games. GREAT! I have no problem paying for actual results.

The guy is already playing like a country club bloated contract veteran.

He's got nothing to prove in his mind. I'm sure he's better than he's shown but the contract looks poorer and poorer as the games go by.

Not surprisingly, he seems to be completely backing off the 'if young guys outplay veterans, guys will lose their jobs' stance of a couple weeks ago.

He can't mess up his whiteboard. Above all else the whiteboard cannot be changed.

Desjardins was the one saying that, not Benning.

Wonder if the two maybe disagree on how to proceed?

 :banghead:

This is what I'm talking about. This ship is completely rudderless with everyone in the front office and coaching staff saying different things. There isn't a clear vision or direction for this team. We're a team that wants to contend for the cup yet rebuild while playing kids who are ready yet have stacked the team with mediocre veterans for mentorship.

It's like classic Vietnam-era double speak from the US Government such as "We destroyed the village to save it."

Also having two guys in charge is a disaster and always will be a disaster. Linden was pitched as the front man figurehead PR guy yet when you watch the behind the scenes stuff, he's the guy working the phones and making the trades. So we have a guy that literally fantasy general managers have more experience than operating this team.

Benning said it as recently as the between period interview during the Sharks game on Monday.

Although he also said Vey was a "real good" player with offensive upside:help:, so he may have been drunk.

No kidding.

Are people actually arguing that it's better to pay $100 for worthless garbage than it is to find something worth $100 for free in the garbage?
Suuuure the Canucks could have gotten comparable, or even better, production from guys like Curtis Glencross or Brad Boyes instead of spending actual assets on the only Sutter who doesn't hit, but they could have had those guys for free. Ew! Imagine what our neighbours would think!

Why pay that much for a 3rd line center? he was brought in to play on the 2nd line effectively blocking our young center prospects for years.

Not enamored with the deal myself, BUT:

1) Nucks, as a result of a bidding war with SJ, overpaid for Malhotra who won more draws but got fewer points than Sutter will. Scoring is down since 2011, meaning the likely difference is production is potentially greater. 2nd line duties are expected for at least part of the contract, or until someone PROVES they are consistently better, something that nobody entertained with the Manny signing.

2) Slow it down with the "blocking" part. None of our centre prospects have yet demonstrated ability to perform at top 6 pace in the show with consistency. Horvat and McCann could just as likely stall as bottom 6 players as they are to become Bergeron and Krejci. I note that Jarred is well behind Shirokov's pre season pace a few years back.:)

The contract is, or will be when it kicks in, at or close to market value for a below average 2nd or above average 3rd C. Nucks will almost certainly come out ahead of the Ducks and their new deal with "Guzzler," given that player's value=production/cap hit.

I thought Benning said this last year? Either way, it's pathetic that management may likely keep veterans anyway over rookies who are outplaying those vets. It's really a bad message to send to the youth on this team.
