We need guys who have skill, not a guy with 2 goals in his last 77 games. He's just more of the same, and not an upgrade on either Gaunce or Chaput right now.

Chaput has actually been excellent since being recalled and deserves to stay unless/until we can get a better offensive player into the lineup.

Seth Griffith, on the other hand, was a player who should just have been an automatic claim.

Not saying Lander is skilled. Or a viable NHL player. Just that claiming him allows us to send one of the other guys back to Utica, as they desperately need a boost.

And yes, I was in favour of claiming Griffith, too. And Pulkkinen.

Benning on 1040 this morning.

- on Virtanen: we were on the road, he played a bunch of games where it looked like he was taking a step forward, the Toronto game didn't go well for him, he sat out, was asked to go down and play a couple of games in UTI and come back. Came back on Sunday, Tues a coach's decision not to play him. Met as group THEN to discuss best course of action and settled on AHL. Harder to develop players on the West Coast than the East Coast - not a lot of practice time.

(Uhhhh... okay. Kinda late to get on the same page, no?)

These guys really won't take responsibility for anything, will they? Harder to develop players on the West Coast? Where does he even come up with this crap? Embarrassing.

- on Kane: Not gonna talk about players on other teams. Heh. Would like to add a forward with speed and skill. Whether that can be done remains to be seen.

- on whether he wants to shoot down Kane rumors: No comment.

Did he really group that part about looking for a forward with speed and skill in with the Kane question? Ugh, already preparing for the worst.

- on defensive depth and how to manage it: We have depth on defense now. Have a young good deep group back there. To add a forward we'd have to move someone here.

Wasn't he just complaining about a lack of defense back when we had Hamhuis? Now all of a sudden we're stacked enough to start trading some away?

- on waiver wire and (lack of) claiming/waiver philosophy: Look at every player and ask if it's a player that will help the team now and going forward. Signed some depth players this year (Megna). The game Megna played he showed speed and skill. Chaput has been good. Had players in UTI they wanted to look at before looking at waiver wire to pick up players. (That's not how this works, Jim. Goddammit.)

- on full rebuild: We have existing player contracts that we inherited. Sedins still our best players. Older players still heart and soul of team and teaching young players. Not going to make apologies for where the team is at. Noticed on 3 on 3 last night, had Baertschi (22) out there with Horvat (21) and Stecher who's 22. Just be patient. We're gonna rebuild this thing and be a real good team in the future.

Again, just completely unwilling to take any responsibility for where the team is right now. Incredible. Which of the inherited player contracts are holding him back? Burrows, who they opted not to buy out at the end of last season? The Sedins, who he refers to as our best players? Edler, the top pairing defenseman? **** off already.

This tweet to me defines Jim Benning PERFECTLY.

Like when Benning is gone this is how he'll be remembered for this backwards a$$ thinking.

Though it is Weisbrod-focused, Jim really did his best to set the table for today's Benning on Empty #36, "The Due Diligence":

Yup, this is Benning in a nutshell.

A dog chasing his tail with no plan whatsoever, and bleeding value every time he goes around in a circle.

And again, the notion that we have defensive depth is just astonishing. We have 2 young players who have looked decent in <10 game sample sizes, both of whom should be on a 3rd pairing. You'd think after watching Hutton this year, he'd possibly understand the problem with expecting linear development from young defenders, but I don't think his brain is actually smart enough to link the two together.

Have.

You.

Lost.

Your.

Mind.

Jim.

Pretty much, although it doesn't even mention that he's been accused of assaulting 4 different women in the past year. Or just how poor his production has been in Buffalo.

But at least there's one voice in the media that gets how utterly stupid this is.

Just watch the video about Kane's condo that he keeps in Las Vegas, it says enough about his maturity level: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsBc6eY96UA

Just the polar opposite of the kind of attitude and lifestyle you want your players emulating.

That's your article. That's your reason. That's your entire freaking argument. Nothing else needs to be bloody well said. Given the bolded, how in the hell is this a player we are 1) targeting, and 2) potentially offering up one of our premium assets for?

"uhhhh because we need to get a 20 goal scorer and this team will uhhhhh be fine and uhhhhhhh we gotta trade defenceman to get one so uhhhhhh whatever they ask of us we will uhhhh give to them......and uhhhhhh its hard to make trades in this league and uhhhhh this was the plan all along...the player we want is uhhhhh Evander K, no let's call him E. Kane, and uhhhhh he has lots of stuff and we gotta make sure players have stuff"

Benning...So jacked up on "character" and "leadership" he personally goes out and massively overpays for the likes of Dorsett, Prust, Gudbranson, Sutter.

Now he wants to massively overpay for a known woman-beater.

Jim Benning, ladies and gentleman.

I have absolutely no idea.

20 goal scorer! Derp! Power forward! BC guy!

This team is still chasing the ghost of Cam Neely 30 years later.

This should be a player that has 'DO NOT ACQUIRE' written all over him. He is simply not someone any organization that has any class should even be thinking about, and even moreso in this market where there is extra media scrutiny. Acquiring a player with his track record is shameful and I'd be embarrassed to be a fan and sickened at the thought of cheering for him.

Benning used to be all about culture carriers. What does it say about the kind of culture he wants when he brings in a guy like this?

The only argument I could make is that trading for Kane is a good idea if you think a scorched earth rebuild is needed for the Vancouver Canucks, because that is what is going to happen if he lands in Vancouver. The Canucks should also be getting some assets of value coming their way in addition to Kane.

I'd be fine with the Canucks taking on his contract and never having him report to the team. Do Buffalo a favor.

Unfortunately that gives way too much credit to Benning and we know it is not the reason why he is being pursued. And giving up a young defenseman (and possibly more) is not what I would call doing Buffalo a favor. EDIT: Also, the Canucks have zero cap space to do this.

Kane should be rotting on a bus playing for the Wheeling Nailers. Not on the cusp of being traded to one of the largest hockey markets in the league.

I should be used to Benning's stupidity by now, but I find it unfathomable that someone paid $1M+ to manage a hockey team can have watched the team this year and think that the defense is set and has good depth.

Same. It's frankly astonishing.

Last night's team featured Edler (who was outstanding), a #4-5 guy in Gudbranson, and then 4 guys who should be getting sheltered 3rd pairing minutes. This is one of the thinnest bluelines in the NHL.

Yeah, we've had 2 young guys come in and look good in very small sample sizes. But Tryamkin is the definition of a #6 guy right now, and Stecher should be getting 3rd pairing minutes with top-unit PP time. And we know - as we've seen with Hutton and Corrado - that depending on linear development of young defenders after good initial spurts is a dangerous game. But Jimbo doesn't seem to get that and seems to be tripping over himself about all his 'new depth'.

I think a trade for kane will finally get the casuals to turn on him honestly. Someone with that much baggage + trading a popular player will get the goat of some, for sure.

So it's a civil case not a criminal one

seems like a random person who knows they can hit a pay day

not calling her a liar but i mean come on this guy has not done things as bad as Kesler or Kassian

Donald, is that you?

Kidding aside... when there's several isolated incidents like that in such a short period of time, I don't think you can give Kane the benefit of the doubt. Where there's smoke there's fire.

I think what makes it even worse is stuff like this:

Trevor Linden said:
"Athletics is like anything else, whether you're working in a boardroom or an office or within a family. Many things in life take teamwork, unselfishness, and dedication; all the things that make a successful athlete also make a successful family person or business person."

In other words, athletics must form part of a balanced and complete life -- and when illumined by faith, the connection becomes even clearer.

"Athletics and faith are intertwined. The virtues we practice in sport shouldn't change, whether we're working, or in family life, or wherever. They're part of who you are; there should be no distinction between your conduct in the rink, in the office and at home."

A recent convert to Catholicism who was baptized in 2004, Linden's upbringing in a loving and hardworking family prepared him and his older brother Dean well for the faith.

https://canadianchristianity.com/nationalupdates/2010/100211olympic.html

A guy who believes that "athletics must form part of a balanced and complete life" cannot be serious about bringing in Evander Kane. Linden and Benning... They'll say anything to anyone (even to themselves), and then do the exact opposite. Kane has a "do not acquire" sign on him for anyone... For a guy who makes a link between athletics and family and faith, it shouldn't even be a discussion. This is a guy who's athletic team quit on him... and personal life is far from Trevor Linden Christian value.

Yeah, I was willing to give him the doubt after the winnipeg stuff, but now, nope.

Tough to listen to that nonsense from Benning.

So wish they lost to Arizona before he had to come on 1040
