Post-Game Talk: Canucks Kick Oilers Ass - Man I Love this Team! Hughes x2 Heinen x1

No points for Pettersson again, but on the forecheck, he looked really fast. His skating seems to be there, so he should be able to generate some offence.

His straight line skating is there once he gets going. His acceleration is not there. That is key in getting separation.

Pettersson looks fine when he's continually moving. Once he has to stop and start, it's over.

Crosby had this type of whiny baby stuff and grew out of it by ~25.
McDavid is 28 and shit a whiny baby that cheap shots opponents because he knows he can get away with it.

Canucks get full credit for the win but I think it was clear the Oilers were not running on a full tank. McDavid and Drai are going to make some plays no matter what but we didn't give up much overall. Wouldn't exactly call this an encouraging game but a good building block.

Miller was a horse, looked engaged. This was the player we saw last season and you wonder how we are going to replace him.

Pettersson was invisible until the last 5 minutes or so where he had multiple strong shifts on the puck. Had 2 of our 3 best wingers on his line again and generated nothing.

Bottom 2 lines were strong on the puck and on the forecheck. Hoglander looking a lot more confident. I think the Heinen - Blueger - Sherwood line needs to stick, they've played well whenever they've been together this season.

Demko made some good saves early in the game which were important for momentum/morale IMO. Didn't love the 2nd goal. Overall didn't have to do too much.

Hronek not on top of his game but I'm so much more confident when he's on the ice compared to the other guys. Him pushing them down the lineup helps them tread water.

I can see the Oilers having beef with the Canucks' third goal. I would have been annoyed if the shoe was on the other foot.

But I was shocked – in a good way – when the Oilers didn't get a slew of power plays at the end to even out the numbers (and manufacture drama) as per the conventions of game management. And in fact the Canucks got a late PP, which flies in the face of them too. It was refreshing.

One of the plays the Oilers were whining about on the 3-0 goal (the Boeser 'pick') was just blatantly not a penalty. The Pettersson trip on Nurse would have been really chintzy and didn't affect the play/goal at all. I felt like the refs basically got that right.

We played disciplined and didn't give them a chance to make any calls in the 3rd right up until the whole Garland/McDavid thing. And then Ekholm broke his stick over a Canuck.

Oilers GDT is insane. They actually think they were jobbed by the refs tonight after they basically got away with murder all game.
Not just this one, nearly every one is the same.
They're one big victim complex that think any slight touch on their players is a penalty.

Partially why theyre mostly a bunch of delusional pathetic hillbilly pissbags and everyone hates them.

Drivesaitl & a handful of others are aite tho

He would also routinely get mugged and assaulted. He sustained multiple concussions and the league actually failed to protect him (along with main skilled players) between 2011 and 2015. It was during that weird period where the league and media fell in love with the "Bruins" and "tough hockey."

Canucks had again to rely on the short spurt to pull out this game. Happened a few times this season. Overall the team fought hard and defense came up with one of their better efforts. Often not pretty, but somehow got the job done. Game where the team had few stars, but did work extremely hard.

Good

Miller - Never perfect but thought there was drive in his play. His heaviness play was important against the Oilers. A major part of the first period rally and he was better on defensively.

Hughes - was the first star. Most important offensive player in this game. Little preview of the upcoming US - Canada tilt and that might occur in the middle of trade war.

Garland - heart and soul effort. Just gives it his all. And even as a little guy, he goes where others would fear to thread. Drew McDavid into a little UFCing during the last minute melee to help secure the win

Poor

Boeser - all been said. Passing, usually something he is good at, has also fallen off. Seems lost at the moment. Has real problems getting feet moving.

Others

Cassals - his line did a good job of keeping Oilers boxed up in their own zone. Rotated the forecheck well and one unit keeping constant pressure on the puck. Maybe I'm looking or hoping for something positive, but Hoglander seems to have found a bit of a niche on the this line.

Forbert - Got to the puck quicker and mostly moved the puck out of his zone better. Had problems handling Drasaitl on the PK but everyone does. Looking better and getting more reliable. If you can limit down what he has to do, he can be perhaps serviceable.

Myers - mixed bag. Got abused by McDavid on the first goal and sloppy at times. But generally pushed the Edmonton's attack to the outside (which is huge against the Oilers). Kind of dumb at the end of the game.

Pettersson - can't question the work ethic but it is so depressing the way he hasn't developed into the superb offensive player we supposed him to be. At this point, you have to wonder if somehow his offensive game has been, in part, deconstructed by the system within which the team plays. That's open to debate but does IMO seem a factor. Pettersson worked hard in this one and, from a defensive point of view, was effective.

We'll see if the NHL has the balls to deal with the petulant McDavid. Really no different, and seemingly even more direct, than the Soucy cross-check earlier this season. (like McDavid was actually hit from behind and his head driven down in that incident) Might be the League will look for some loophole (like the game wasn't officially over) to get him off the hook. Definitely Garland should have hit the deck and writhed in pain to make some League action more likely.

Amazingly, the Canucks are just 1 point out of a wild card spot, in what is likely the lowest point of the season. They still look to me like they will make the play-offs, now that they are almost fully healthy. Hoping Willander can come in and improve the d core if we are battling for the last play-off spot.

I too am hoping that Willander comes and impresses. Sadly, it's much more likely that he will take some time to develop.

But here's hoping!

I agree

Goons like Q. Hughes and McWahbaby need to be banned from the league. Both have been kicked out of games this year for their outlandish thuggery.

The Coilers complaining about picks. Hilarious

Tonight’s Start
  • Liked the energy; everyone contributed really early on
  • Got to their game and managed the puck
  • Getting the lead helped a lot of guys
Garland vs McDavid
  • Haven’t looked at the video
  • Out of their control and is league stuff
This Win
  • Talked about their consistency and how to handle pressure; needed guys to dig in
  • Need some good stuff to happen; need some momentum; have been having bad luck and self inflicted mistakes
  • This is a good win
  • Can’t get to high or low
  • Day off tomorrow
Miller
  • Been a lot of noise
  • Tocchet has been here 2-½ years and Miller has played a lot of good hockey for Tocchet
  • Was outstanding tonight
  • Going to march along
  • His line did a hell of a job
  • Winning those faceoffs on the powerplay were crucial and got them those two goals

They are ao entitled and braindead to the point that they make the Leafs and Avs fanbase on here look tolerable and decent in comparison.
Most hockey fans are hypocrites just like the players are. If we had McDavid we'd do the same or even worse since anytime someone sneezes near Hughes there are canuck fans who cry murder. Let's not forget that most canucks fans loved Cooke and Raffi Torres. We cheered when Torres demolished Saebrock with a dirty hit but when Big Buff was giving us the business we did not like it.
