why on earth would you pay significant assets to test your rather optimistic theory that they would mesh seamlessly and risk killing the golden goose that is hughes or being forced to underutilize dobson?

The PP1 sucks, and the team needs more than a couple solid defensemen if they want to compete. What type of theory are we testing exactly, that Hughes and Dobson are both productive offensive defensemen that don't play the same side? I'd test that any day.

One thing about Vancouver that's hard to quantify but certainly must play a factor is that while they have two centers who've scored 100+ points in different seasons they really only have the personnel to provide quality linemates to 1 of them.
