I know this has been said time and time again and I've honestly never felt it until now but this may be the year for you guys. The team looks good and should be even better with Kesler back in the mix.

Most importantly, the Canucks are no longer being pushed around on the ice which is so crucial.

Thanks, man. I hope so too, we've waited long enough, that's for sure.

Very notable stat:

Schroeder was 11-8 in the faceoff dot. If Kesler replaces Kassian on the PP when he returns, we'll hopefully have a forward who can take faceoffs for the 2nd unit.

Great game by Raymond tonight. Hopefully he keeps it up. He's been ragged on for a long time, and I don't really trust him still, but he was injured last year so if he can return to his 20 goal form and play well with Schroeder, then we've got a great third line when everyone is healthy.

I will give Higgins the benefit of the doubt because he was there for the team last year.

When Kesler and Booth are healthy:

Sedin - Sedin - Kassian
Burrows - Kesler - Hansen
Raymond - Schroeder - Booth
Lapierre - Malhotra - Higgins

If Raymond keeps his play up and Schroeder/Raymond develop chemistry to the point where they are inseparable, that line-up will be sick.

I've always wanted Burrows-Kesler-Hansen to be reunited.. they were such an effective defensive unit. However, we could never put them back together because Burrows needed to be with the Sedins and there wasn't enough scoring from the third line to justify putting Kesler into a more defense-focused role. If Raymond-Schroeder-Booth can provide secondary offense, the Canucks are good to go.

Besides sedin getting punched in the face repeatedly by marchand and both of them getting harrassed by bolland in the playoffs (which should have been penalties), this is overblown. The fact of the matter is that no matter how tough your team is, someone can still deliver a cheapshot and seriously injure your players. Then what? Toughness won't help any team there, especially when the refs usually decide to protect the player that decided to deliver the cheapshot.

This applies to literally every team so your point kind of implodes on itself.

And yes, toughness does help teams. I don't usually watch Canucks games much but the lockout has me tuning into more teams. Even my brothers and I were discussing amongst ourselves how Vancouver seems much more stable all round than previous years. Garrison is helping, Edler seems to be stepping up again, Kassian is off to a great start.

Once defense stabilizes and Kesler returns, they'll have no problem getting past a Chicago/St. Louis if they keep this style of play.

Vancouver is also one of the only teams in the league this year that can be a Stanley Cup contender without any trading necessary.

imagine if we had a guy like kassian in the finals.

marchand keeps punching daniel in the face and the refs do nothing about it? thomas bowls over henrik and the refs do nothing about it? kassian is a guy who can and will run over the other team's goalie and put him in the hospital. there was literally no canuck on that team who would/could perform that role.

now boston obviously doesn't want thomas getting run like that. and sure if kassian runs thomas he has to answer to chara. but again, no other canuck would be willing to answer that. kassian would and yeah he wouldn't win that fight but he'd answer the bell.

the point is not that any of that would have happened in the finals. the point is that boston already knows going into the series that the canucks have a big guy with that kind of stones and marchand doesn't antagonize the sedins in the same way (neither would bolland have in previous years, and marchand would certainly never ever have low bridged salo like he did last year). the threat of a kassian isn't that he's going to punch your teeth in. it's that he'll take your guy out without a second thought because he's not scared of the consequences so you better not take liberties with his guys.

Exactly. It's not so much about fights as much as it is the mere presence of a player like that.

Agreed. Did you see that play early in the first period where Kassian fended off a ducks player with one hand and made a pass with his stick in the other hand? Beastmode

Shortshorts game review

Defense:

Edler, Garrison, Tanev and Ballard were exceptional!
-LOVE Ballard coming to Edlers defense. We need that comradery and is a large reason why I don't want Ballard traded. No one else does that from our defense.
-Tanev is so solid defensively. He's an amazing defensemen. Can't wait for his first goal to come.
-I really wish Garrison stopped roaming in the PP and just unload slappers. Not sure if this is a PP setup or just Garrison.

Hamhuis and Bieksa. You guys suck. Get it together.

Offense: The lack of 5v5 offense is a serious concern. However, considering our major injuries it's expected.

Sedins executed. That's what AV wanted, that's what he got. Great game.

Kassian. Good game, got himself involved physically, and scored himself a goal on the PP. We can't expect the bruising dominating powerforward every game. It's simply not sustainable, nor should we expect it extremely consistently from a 22year old.

I told you guys about Raymond ;) Suck it haters. Kesler and Raymond is simply not a good fit due to Kesler's playstyle. Schroeder is a perfect compliment to Raymond.

Schroeder found Raymond perfectly in stride with a beautiful saucer pass. Played very well defensively, and won the majority of his faceoffs. That's a perfect coaches game right there. Perfect rookie game for him.

Burrows playing much better. Bodes well for the future. Definitely got a kick in the butt when AV sent Weise out with the Sedins instead of him.

4 line played super solid. Lappiere and Weise played very solid games. Volpatti had an exceptional game. All of them hitting, cycling and solid defensively. Well rewarded at the end of the game on the PP.

Hansen had a quiet game.

Higgins sucks.

not only does Bieksa do that too.... he did it last night

And, as mentioned many times, any time there was a Sedin/Kassian line scrum all the Ducks go straight after Kassian instead of the Sedins. Wouldn't happen before with Burrows.

Imagine if the defense was healthy (and Rome wasn't suspended).

When Kesler and Booth are healthy:

Sedin - Sedin - Kassian
Burrows - Kesler - Hansen
Raymond - Schroeder - Booth
Lapierre - Malhotra - Higgins

This is my ideal lineup as well. Although I don't know if Raymond or Booth can play off wing.

Kassian helps to prevent the extra-curricular bs towards the Sedins and he continues to be a scoring threat.

Burrows - Kesler - Hansen would be arguably the best checking line in the NHL. Their speed would overwhelm the opposition and I expect that they would produce like a second line while providing elite shutdown roles.

Raymond - Schroeder - Booth - Booth adds some size to this line and would drive the net. The speed of this line would also likely trouble the opponent as they would find themselves paired against the other teams third pairing quite often (defensemen who tend to have less mobility). Thus far Raymond & Schroeder look capable of overcoming the occasional defensive mistake of Booth.

Higgins - Lapierre - Whoever
The fourth line can be whoever is playing the best. Volpatti and Weise can be inserted in games where extra toughness may be required. Higgins moves up the lineup whenever injuries occur.

The Canucks have so many options for line up combinations!

If Kassian and Schroeder are regularly contributing, that is one amazingly deep offense.
The great thing is, if it works out, that perfectly fills out the biggest holes on our team. 2nd line winger and 3rd line center. With Raymond playing like a second liner, that could potentially result in a massively improved fourth line as well.

And still with the ability to trade Luongo to further improve it.

I'm not expecting that both Schroeder/Kassian continue playing great, but I'm pretty optimistic about how this team is looking.

If Schroeder is good enough defensively that adding Booth to that line won't hurt it defensively, I'd like to see this as well. I just love that Burrows - Kesler - Hansen line so much, especially in playoff conditions.

Another thing that could work is

Sedin - Sedin - Kassian
Higgins - Kesler - Booth
Burrows - Lapierre - Hansen (I just love the way Burrows and Hansen play together, and this would be an upgrade on that great Higgins playoff 3rd line, IMO)
Raymond - Schroeder - Weise

Except when Kesler and Booth are back I would be shocked if Schroeder was still on the team. Everything about how this organization has operated tells me Schroeder will be back in Chicago.

Agree but I think I'd rather have Burrows up with Kesler and Booth.

I see where you're coming from but if they can carve out a spot for Hodgson in a protected 3rd line role I'm sure, if he earns his spot, they can make a place for Jordan.

I like the Schroeder/Raymond combo in all the games i've seen it...

Sedin- Sedin- Kassian
Booth- Kesler- Burrows
Raymond- Schroeder- Hansen
Higgins- Lapierre- Weisse/Volpatti/Malhotra

?

That is exactly what I was thinking. That 3rd line would be fast as heck. I'd like to see another teams 3rd line try and keep up with those 3. Sedin's and Kassian seem to be working well and we all know how Burrows and Kesler can play together when left alone. That right there is a solid line up.
